Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the science vessel the Enterprise has been sent to find?

Answer: USS Brattain

The Brattain had been missing for 29 days. They had sent out a distress call. The ship's name was mis-spelled on the model as Brittain, but Brattain was the name used on the computer graphics seen during the episode and in the episode script itself.
2. Upon boarding the Brittain, the away team found the ship complement to be 35 people. 34 were dead, one was alive. Troi determined that he had not killed the others. What was the race of the sole survivor on the Brittain?

Answer: Betazoid

Andrus was found in a catatonic state and only Troi could "communicate" with him. Sarek is Spock's father and is played by Mark Lenard. Lenard has the distinction of being the only major guest star to have played 4 different aliens in "Star Trek" history.

He was an alien with a removable head, a Klingon, the first Romulan Commander to be seen, and his greatest role, Sarek, the Vulcan. Antaak was a Klingon doctor and Gilora, played by Tracy Scoggins, was a Cardassian scientist.
3. Deanna Troi is the only crew member having dreams. In fact, she says they are nightmares. In a dark fog she hears a voice. What is that voice saying?

Answer: Eyes in the dark, one moon circles.

Troi figures out that she is not having nightmares. She believes there is another ship trapped and the beings are sending her a message through her REM frequency. Betazoids reach REM sleep at a different frequency than other species and the beings have tapped into Troi and Hagan.
4. One of the side effects of lack of REM sleep is paranoia. Miles experiences jealousy and accuses Keiko of taking every opportunity to see a man. What is his name?

Answer: Tom Corbin

Keiko is late returning to their quarters and we find Miles pacing. Keiko is oblivious to his mood and goes on about here frustrating day. Miles asks had she seen Tom Corbin and Keiko teases him. "I think you're a little jealous." Miles says, "You take me for a fool." Then he leaves for Ten Forward. Tom Paris is from "Voyager." Thomas Picard is a character from "Star Trek: Generations." And Tom Jones, well, he's just the sexiest senior citizen there is. Did you catch him on "American Idol" season 10?
5. Another side effect of lack of REM dreaming for the crew was hallucinations. What is the rumor Gillespie told Miles was going around?

Answer: A man in an old Starfleet uniform was seen on the lift of the engine core.

The crew member who passed the rumor to Gillespie said he followed the man. Once he got to the top of the lift there was no one there. Later, we see Gillespie inciting a riot in Ten Forward which Guinan promptly puts a stop to.
6. Data discovers that the ship is caught in a rift. What did he say the name of this rare anomaly was?

Answer: Tyken rift

Named for Bela Tyken, Data explained the Tyken rift to be a rupture in space "into which energy is absorbed. The ship's energy is absorbed before it can be utilize it." A temporal rift is a tear in space and time. These rifts usually cause a vessel and its crew to experience being transported to a different time and space. Bassen rift comes from "Star Trek Titan" book series.

The Scimitar in "Star Trek: Nemesis" was detonated and the result was this rift. Rift array is just something I made up.
7. More crew member hallucinations manifest. Picard envisions the ceiling of the turbolift coming down on him. Dr. Crusher "sees" the bodies in the morgue sit upright. What does Riker hallucinate?

Answer: Snakes in his bed.

Picard finds the hallucinations very disconcerting because his grandfather suffered from dementia. Minuet is a holographic being Riker fell in love with.
8. Picard is sitting in his ready room and the door buzzes four times. He says, "Enter" each time. He finally gets up to answer and there is no one there. How many times does it buzz again before he hears a knock?

Answer: 3

Dr. Crusher and Troi enter to tell him their new theories on the predicament.
9. Data and Troi figure "one moon circles" means one electron circles one proton. What does this symbolize?

Answer: Hydrogen atom

Troi and Data realize that the other ship needs hydrogen in order to create an explosion that will free them from the rift.
10. Once figuring what is needed, Troi must enter her dream state to convey the message that they will send a burst of hydrogen to interact with the other ship's explosive. She only has two minutes to get the message through. So, they decide on one word. What is the word?

Answer: Now

This was a frustrating part of the episode for me. I found myself yelling at Troi. She kept saying, "Where are you? Where are you, I have to tell you." I said, "Woman, you are wasting time, just say NOW, please?" (A little to into it, I know.) As the hydrogen blast dissipates, Data says, "Counselor Troi must not have gotten the message through." FINALLY, we see the resulting blast. Voila, they're out of there.
