Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This was the year during which most of season one took place.

Answer: 2006

Season one debuted in 2014, and took place in the years 2006 and 2007. Each episode stated that the names had been changed to protect the survivors of this "true story", but out of respect for the dead, all events were otherwise told as they happened.

The Coen brothers, who wrote and directed the film, have made various claims on the inspiration for this story, but have themselves admitted the story was a work of fiction. Noah Hawley wrote much of seasons 1 and 2 of the TV series, with the permission of the Coen brothers.
2. Martin Freeman played _____, an insurance salesman who murdered his wife with a hammer in season one.

Answer: Lester Nygaard

Pearl Nygaard continuously put down her husband Lester, insinuating that his brother Chazz had more to offer as a man. After Lester met Malvo at the hospital, he slowly seemed inspired to rid himself of Pearl. He even framed his own brother for the murder.

Kelly Holden Bashar played Pearl, and Josh Close played Chazz.
3. Who played the hit man, Lorne Malvo, in season one?

Answer: Billy Bob Thornton

Malvo was a mysterious character, whose true identity was unclear. He'd contract a murder, execute it, and then receive a new identity before he took his next job. Through season one, he was mostly known as Malvo to the police investigating the body of a man found in the woods, the murder of Pearl Nygaard, and the murder of Chief Vern Thurman.

Shawn Doyle played Vern Thurman, who was killed by Malvo as well.
4. The "supermarket king" played by Oliver Platt in season one.

Answer: Stavros Milos

Milos discovered a cache of money buried in the snow back in 1987 (this tied back to the original film), which saved him at the time. In 2006 someone was blackmailing him, and Milos felt sure it was about taking the money. He hired Malvo, whose new identity was that of a minister named Peterson, to find the person and kill him. It turned out to be his wife's fitness instructor.
5. He played the Duluth police officer who became a postal worker at the end of season one.

Answer: Colin Hanks

Gus Grimly, who was a single father, stopped Malvo after he saw the man speeding on the snowy streets of Duluth, Minnesota. Malvo gave a menacing, albeit quiet, threat to Grimly about his daughter, which caused Gus to let him go. Through the course of the investigations, Gus and Bemidji policy deputy Molly Solverson became close, and eventually married. After the case was solved, and Malvo dead, Gus quit police work and started delivering mail.

Allison Tolman played Molly in season one, and Raven Stewart played her in season two.
6. In season two, Kirsten Dunst played _____, a woman who hit a mobster's son with her car.

Answer: Peggy Blumquist

Peggy was an unsatisfied housewife with hopes of enlightenment. She was always talking about reaching some unknown fulfillment. On her way home one night, she was driving by a diner, and out onto the road stepped Rye Gerhardt. He was the youngest son of mobsters Floyd and Otto Gerhardt. She drove home with Rye in her windshield, and acted as though nothing had happened. She and her husband Ed cleaned up the mess, but the dominoes that fell as a result of that accident caused a huge confluence of events. It all boiled down to a night at motel and a UFO appearance. Yep, aliens!

Jesse Plemmons played Ed, Jean Smart played Floyd, and Kieran Culkin played Rye.
7. She was suffering from cancer in season two.

Answer: Betsy Solverson

Betsy was the wife of Lou and mother of Molly. Both of the latter two characters were first met in season one, seventeen years after the events in season two. Cristin Milioti played Betsy. She also played the official "mother" on the hit series "How I Met Your Mother".
8. The "Indian" working for the Gerhardt crime family, who ended up turning on all of them.

Answer: Hanzee Dent

Indian was still the term mostly used in 1979, when season two took place. In time, we would come to use the correct terminology of Native American. Hanzee was fairly dedicated to the family, who'd taken him off the streets when he was a child. But, he got very little respect from the Gerhardt brothers, Dodd in particular, and he ended up killing Dodd for insulting him. Because of that, and additional slights that built up, he tricked Floyd and Bear Gergardt into ambushing Dakota police at a motel, where the unexpected UFO showed up. Hanzee killed the matriarch Floyd himself, as the gun fight went on around them. Betsy's father, Sheriff Hank Larsson, had some very unusual drawings that reminded me of stuff I'd seen on "The X-Files" in his office. And, the man who ran the gas station in the last couple of episodes had UFO related signs in his store.

Ted Danson played Lou's father-in-law, Hank Larsson. Jean Smart played Floyd. Zahn McClarnon played Hanzee. He also appeared as a reservation cop on the series "Longmire".
9. Patrick Wilson played this policeman in season two.

Answer: Lou Solverson

In season one, an older Lou (then played by actor Keith Carradine) hinted about the events of 1979. In season one, Lou worked in a diner in Bemidji, and was retired from police work. In season two, he showed a tenacious zest for his job, which translated to his adult daughter Molly in season one.

Patrick Wilson has been in many movies. Among those are the first two "Insidious" films, the first two in "The Conjuring" franchise, "The Ledge", and "Prometheus". One of his earlier movies was "Hard Candy", opposite Ellen Page.
10. The events in season two took place in this year.

Answer: 1979

Season two was depicted as a prequel, with an all new cast of actors. But, it directly tied into characters from season one, as well as facts revealed in season one about these 1979 events. Season two debuted on FX in 2015. Season three was given a go ahead to premier sometime in 2017.
