Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what country (and in the language of which country) was "Feria: The Darkest Light" filmed?

Answer: Spain

This programme was shot in Spain in Spanish. Filming occurred in Minas de Riotinto (in the province of Huelva) and in Zahara de la Sierra (in the province of Cádiz). The Spanish-language title is "Feria: La luz más oscura." In Medieval Latin, "feria" meant a market day or festival. In Ecclesiastical Latin, it means any weekday on which no feast (festal) is observed.
2. Where and when (primarily) is "Feria: The Darkest Light" set?

Answer: in 1995 in Andalusia

The series begins in 1975 with an old man hiding from the Spanish government in a cave/mine in Andalusia. Most of the events in the programme occur at and immediately after a midsummer fair in the small village of San Juan in 1995. The mountain village was supported by a mine which was shut down by an explosion twenty years before.
3. What is the relationship between Eva and Sophia?

Answer: they are sisters

Eva, played by Ana Tomeno, and Sofia, played by Carla Campra are the daughters of Elena, played by Marta Nieto, and Pablo, played by Ernest Villegas. The girls are quite different, one from the other. Sofia is the younger, less outgoing, more reticent to engage with others, uncomfortable in groups. Eva is the elder, enjoys being with her friends at parties and likes to socialize.
4. Of what did the 23 people found dead in season 1, episode 1, die?

Answer: asphyxiation/suffocation

The naked bodies of 23 members of the cult are found outside the entrance to the cave. Season 1, episode 1 is titled "The Red Lake" with reference to the blood in the stagnant water. The victims were apparently killed by some poisonous gas. It might have been mass suicide but the police suspect Eva and Sofia's parents of mass murder. Police Lieutenant Alvaro Guillén, played by Isak Férriz, has a film showing 24 people entering the mine, including the girls' mother, Elena, who is not seen to come out with the others.
5. Why was the mine sealed up for twenty years?

Answer: to conceal the door to the Kingdom

In the 1970s, Elena's father fled from the Spanish head of state Francisco Frank and hid in the mine. There he discovered the portal to the Kingdom. Locals became involved in a cult devoted to reaching the Kingdom. The mine was (partially) sealed up by a topographer, Pablo, who married Elena. Elena's father lived for 20 years in hiding.
6. For what did members of the cult of light strive and hope?

Answer: to open the door to the Kingdom

Members of the cult believed the Gnostic theological Valentinus who taught that the world was defective, evil and imperfect, but that a place of perfection awaited where there was no pain, no suffering, no illness, no death. Like all Gnostics, they believed that human flesh was a sort of imprisoning jacket to be shed.

The only people who could open the door to the Kingdom were "the perfect ones" including Elena and Sofia.
7. Who was the creature who had crossed from the Kingdom over the threshold and was the link between the cult and the Kingdom?

Answer: Dekta, an Archon

The gods (demons) of the Kingdom were called Archons. One of those, named Dekta, came through the portal and took up residence inside a member of the cult. This creature, which looked rather like a big chameleon, came out of Elena's father's mouth and entered others in the group sequentially. Archons required a human body to occupy in order to survive.
8. In the structure of the cult of light, what was a vessel?

Answer: a person inhabited by the Archon

Only the "perfect ones" may serve as a vessel to contain the Archon. When the Archon moved from one person to another, the cult members recognized that new person as a perfect one, because of the Archon's choice of them. The Archon then operated through the vessel. Cult members said that the vessel was a "transmitter of the light."
9. How does Estrella assist the girls after their parents' disappearance?

Answer: she puts them up at her clinic/hospital

Estrella, played by Sauce Ena, is a psychotherapist who maintains a facility for treating patients. Seeing that it is unsafe for Eva and Sofia to remain in their family home, she moved the girls into her place. She assisted Lieutenant Alvaro Guillen in this case, looking up information about the cult in old books.
10. How many "veils" have to be parted before the door to the Kingdom can be opened?

Answer: five

It was the perfect one who could open the veils. Elena opened four of them and then changed her mind, refusing to open the fifth. In a dream, Sofia's mother, Elena, directed her to lift all five of the requisite veils. Sofia completes the first four rituals.

Then, in "The Solitary King" (season 1, episode 8), she opens the fifth and final veil. The season ends with a cliffhanger: what will be the result of opening the door?
