Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ghost of Edwardian noblewoman

Answer: Lady Stephanie 'Fanny' Button

Lady Button and her gay philandering husband owned Button House during the Edwardian Era. He killed her when she discovered him "engaged" with the butler and the groundskeeper. She reenacts her murder every time the clock strikes three, the hour of her death. Unlike the other ghosts who are invisible, she appears as a ghostly presence in photographs, called "the Grey Lady" in Season 2, Episode 1. Lady Stephanie is played by Martha Howe-Douglas.
2. Ghost of a caveman

Answer: Robin

In Series 3, Episode 7 (the Christmas Special), Robin learns the meaning of property ownership and accused the other ghosts of unlawfully occupying his land for 10,000 years. Robin may be the brightest of the lot. He is good at chess and crossword puzzles.

He often gives sage advice to the other ghosts. In Season 1, Episode 5 ("Moonah Ston"), he leads them in a primitive ritual on the occasion of a lunar eclipse. Robin is played by Laurence Rickard.
3. Living woman who inherits Button House

Answer: Alison Cooper

Alison and her husband are surprised to inherit a country estate from a distant 99-year-old relative. The catches are that Button House is dilapidated and haunted. One of the ghosts pushes her out a window to prevent her from turning the house into a hotel but she awakens from a coma able to see and hear ghosts. Charlotte Ritchie plays Alison Cooper. Ritchie was an extra in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (2005) and went on to many other film and television roles.

She sings in the Season 2 "Ghosts" Christmas Special and is a member of a classical singing group.
4. Ghost of Georgian noblewoman

Answer: Kitty

Kitty, a Georgian noblewoman, was born on 18 June 1757 and died sometime in the late middle 18th century. The Captain calls her Katherine. She was adopted as a small child and was mistreated by her sister Eleanor. Nonetheless her countenance is sunny, she is happy and open to friends, if somewhat simple.

The role of Kitty is played by Lolly Adefope, a stand-up comedian and actor. She was nominated (with three others) in 2021 for a National Comedy Award for her performance in "Ghosts". The awards were delayed by Covid.
5. Ghost of disgraced Tory MP

Answer: Julian Fawcett

Julian was a hard-drinking, randy, immoral fellow during life, who died of a heart-attack without his pants on. In one episode, he claimed to have been sober for "twenty seven years, three months and eleven days" since that is how long he had been dead.

He is able to interact with the corporeal world in small ways, pushing buttons or moving small objects. This allows him to use a laptop computer (and to set up a bogus identity on a dating website). Julian Fawcett is played by Simon Farnaby.
6. Ghost of a woman burned for witchcraft

Answer: Mary

Mary was an illiterate servant in the Stuart era, married and widowed, who was accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake. Her costume is singed and sooty; wisps of smoke occasionally drift from her head. She cowers at the mention of fire. It appears she was a Catholic. Her accent is West Country and she inexplicably pluralises words. She is portrayed by Katy Wix.
7. Alison's living husband

Answer: Mike Cooper

Unlike his wife Allison, Mike Cooper can neither see nor hear the ghosts. While she is in a coma, he takes out a huge mortgage to rehabilitate the manor. Mike is better at making plans than at carrying them out. He finally accepts the directions of the ghosts who live in the cellar for how to repair the boiler. Kiell Smith-Bynoe portrays Mike Cooper.
8. Ghost of a failed Romantic poet

Answer: Thomas Thorne

Thomas was killed in a duel with pistols in 1824. He has been unsuccessful as a Romantic poet. He was also unsuccessful at romance. In Season 2, Episode 4, Thomas discerns that his cousin Francis Button arranged the duel to remove him as an impediment to marrying Isabel Higham. Thomas is stricken with unrequited love for the living owner of Buttons. Mathew Baynton plays the role of Thomas Thorne.
9. Ghost of a Boy Scout leader

Answer: Patrick 'Pat' Butcher

The family of Patrick "Pat" Butcher visits Button House annually on the date of his death in 1984. He was a scoutmaster killed by an arrow to his neck shot accidentally by one of the scouts. In Season 1, Episode 3, it is disclosed that his wife Carol was having an affair with Morris, his best friend, who she married after Pat's death. Pat appears in his uniform with the arrow still stuck in his neck. Jim Howick appears as Patrick 'Pat' Butcher.
10. Ghost of a gay WWII army officer

Answer: the Captain

Although it has been a long while since the Second World War, the Captain asserts that he is the ranking officer in the Button House and therefore in charge. He dresses in an army officer's dress uniform with a Sam Browne belt and carries a swagger stick.

The Captain's real name is never disclosed. Although he is a closeted gay man, he has a warm relationship with Fanny. He sings "Modern Major General" from "The Pirates of Penzance" in several episodes. Ben Willbond plays the part of the Captain.
