Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During a walk at the Guy Fawkes Night, Cay, Captain Hastings suggests that the fireworks and the noise resulting from them would help a murderer conceal his crime. On the next day, he is unexpectedly proven correct, when widow Barbara Allen is found dead in her apartment in the Mews. Her death is puzzling, since she was to be married to a Member of Parliament and was not a depressed person, according to her roommate, Miss Plenderleith. What's the title of the relevant episode?

Answer: Murder in the Mews

What is most unusual in the case of Mrs. Allen is the fact that there was no murder there. She had committed suicide, because she was being blackmailed by Major Eustace. Eustace knew that Mrs. Allen had mothered a child whilst in India and threatened to tell her fiancé, leading her to committing suicide. Miss Plenderleith, her roommate, angered on the probability that Eustace, who was in fact responsible for Barbara's death, would not be punished. Thus, she created a scene of crime in Barbara's room, hoping to make the authorities believe Eustace murdered Mrs. Allen.

The police is in fact misled, but Poirot is not. When confronted by him, Miss Plenderleith confesses and agrees to save the Major from the gallows.
2. In "The Dream", Poirot is summoned by Benedict Farley to help him interpret a strange night dream of his, in which Farley saw himself committing suicide. Farley was an important businessman in London. What kind of food did his factories produce?

Answer: Pies

When Poirot asked Farley to show him the room where the events of the dream occurred, Farley abruptly refused and Poirot left. On the next day, Farley was found dead, having apparently committed suicide the way the dream's events happened. Yet, Poirot is not convinced.

He investigates the mysterious incident and finds out it was a murder. Farley was murdered by his wife and his secretary, Mr. Cornworthy, who was the secret lover of Farley's wife. The reason was the fact that Farley, in his will, was leaving 250000 pounds to his wife and the criminals lusted after the money.
3. One may think that puppets and dolls would have no place in an adventure of Hercule Poirot. Yet,once Poirot used a doll to unmask a murderer. In which episode did it happen?

Answer: Problem at Sea

In the episode "Problem at Sea", the murder happened during a cruise to Alexandria on a ship. Mrs. Clapperton was found dead inside her cabin, with the suspects being many and the clues seeming few. Poirot reaches the conclusion that the murderer is her husband, Colonel Clapperton , but he cannot prove it. So, he tells the passengers that a speaking doll will give them the name of the murderer. To everyone's surprise, the doll indicates the Colonel as the killer.

He confesses. Of course, the doll did not speak, Poirot had persuaded the daughter of one of the passengers to provide the voice of the doll.
4. In "The Disappearance of Mr. Davenheim", a businessman who runs a bank mysteriously disappears and his main rival is the main suspect. Poirot takes interest in the case, which solution is given by the presence of an item in Mr. Davenheim's bathroom shelves. Which one?

Answer: Razor

The reason of Poirot's curiosity about the razor is the fact that Davenheim had a beard, yet the razors that were found were used. This, coupled with the fact that Davenheim and his wife were sleeping in separate bedrooms, led Poirot to conclude that Davenheim, whose bank was facing severe troubles, planned to disappear and live a new life as the trump and pickpocket thief Billy Kellett, who had been arrested some days before. Davenheim is recognized by his wife and his rival, Mr. Lowen, was set free.
5. The Count Foscatini is found dead in his apartment in Addisland Court, Holland Park. His valet, Mr. Edwin Graves, who had developed a romantic relationship with Miss Lemon, believes that his master was being blackmailed. What is the title of this episode?

Answer: The Adventure of the Italian Nobleman

Poirot decides to investigate the murder. The night of his murder, as Mr. Graves said, Foscatini was visited by a person named Ascanio, who belonged in a secret organization knows as Masnada. It seems obvious that Ascanio was blackmailing Foscatini, but when found, Ascanio denies any relationship with the victim.

It is revealed that Ascanio was assigned to get back documents exposing an Italian businessman as an opponent of Mussolini and that Foscatini was the blackmailer. Ascanio took the documents and burned them, after paying Foscatini. Finally, the killer was none other than Graves, who wished to lay hands upon the money his master took from Ascanio.
6. Roger and Zoe Havering invite Hastings and Poirot for the hunting season. During their stay, Poirot catches a cold. Moreover, Roger's uncle, Harrington Pace, is found murdered. What's the title of the episode?

Answer: The Mystery of Hunter's Lodge

Poirot, although bedridden, investigates the case on behalf of Mr. Anstruther, whose bike was stolen by a man who matched the description the police had for the murderer. The investigation proves that it was Roger and Zoe who were responsible for the crime.

The reason was the wealth of Mr. Pace. On the day of the murder Roger, supposedly going to an appointment in London, took the train, but dropped in the first station, Ashby Picard, disguised himself, stole Mr. Anstruther's bike, went to his uncle's house and killed him.

His wife, meanwhile, had put on a disguise herself. As Mrs. Middleton, the temporary housekeeper, she created a perfect suspect for the murder. The real Mrs. Middleton had no relation with the crime. Finally, Mr. Anstruther's bike was found by Poirot in the process of his investigation, buried.
7. Oysters can be used for murder, indeed. Old Amelia Barrowby fell victim of poisoning with strychnine in an episode. She had previously met Poirot and had made him be interested in gardening. What's the title of the episode?

Answer: How Does Your Garden Grow?

Poirot goes to Miss Barrowby's house to investigate. At first the main suspect is the maid, Katrina Ranger, who hailed from an old aristocratic Russian family, going into exile after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. Katrina would benefit from the death of her employer, making her a target for the authoritites. Poirot is not sure of her guilt. By learning that she ate separately from Miss Barrowby and her family, the Delafontaine couple, he has proven her innocence.

The real killers were the Delafontaines, who murdered Miss Barrowby so that her money would not go to Katrina.
8. Mrs. Todd visits Poirot, asking him to solve a rather trivial case: Eliza Dunn, her cook, has disappeared and the only sign of communication between the two women, after the day of the disappearance, was the fact that Miss Dunn sent for her trunk to be picked up. What is the title of the episode?

Answer: The Adventure of the Clapham Cook

Poirot accepts the case. Interviewing the housemaid, he learns that the trunk had been packed, leading him to the conclusion that Miss Dunn had planned to leave. After he finds her, Poirot learns that she had been told by a lawyer, named Crotchet, that she had inherited a house from a family member.

The detective investigates further and finds that the trunk, which was never delivered to Miss Dunn, was used by a bank robber in order to hide the body of a colleague he had killed, so that he could put the blame on him for the theft of bonds worth of thousands of pounds.

The mysterious criminal was Mr. Simpson, who was a lodger in Mrs. Todd's house.
9. Blowpipes, or blowguns, are used by several tribes of the Amazon Rainforests for hunting and other purposes. The same applies to a murderer in a Poirot episode. Which one?

Answer: Death in the Clouds

Dr. Norman Gale used a poisoned dart in order to murder Madame Giselle. The blowpipe was used by him so as to trick the authorities into believing it was the means for the murder. In fact, the clever dentist was disguised as a steward and stabbed Madame Giselle when he went to 'serve" her.

The reason for the murder in order to lay his hands on the money Madame Giselle would leave to her estranged daughter, Anna, whom he had married and later killed.
10. The item shown in the picture is a Dictaphone. You might exclaim, "Hey, you are writing a Poirot quiz, not a Sci/Tech quiz"! Yet, once a Dictaphone was used by a killer in a Poirot episode, in order to turn the police's attention to the wrong path. In which episode did it happen?

Answer: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

The Dictaphone was used by the murderer, Dr. Sheppard, in order to make the authorities have wrong assumptions as for the exact time of the murder. The reason for the murder was that Ackroyd had learned about Sheppard's blackmailing activities and could ruin the doctor.

In this episode, Dr. Sheppard, who is the killer, becomes Poirot's assistant so as to mislead the great detective as well, where he ultimately fails.
