Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alice is told that if she finds a staircase in the woods, she should do which of the following?

Answer: Get away from it

Sitting in a coffee shop, Alice sips at a coffee while her co-worker, Nathan, talks about urban legends in the city. She's new to the city and doesn't know too much about it, but he tells her a story about graffiti artists. Two artists were tagging near Peach's Meat Packing plant one day when, while walking through the woods in one of the dangerous parks in the city, they came across a staircase in the trees leading up to a door. Alice is told to never ascend the staircase; she shouldn't even look at it.

But that day, the two artists turned away from it and looked through the woods to find someone hiding in the bushes.
2. Alice moves to the new city with Zoe. They're of what relation?

Answer: Sisters

According to the story, the two graffiti artists split up. While Kara stayed behind to look for the figure hiding in the bushes, Ben went off on his own, coming across a fog-enshrouded playground lit by dim lampposts. There, he found the person hiding in the bushes waiting for him with a meat tenderizer in hand. Kara would later chase after him, hearing his screams, only to find no sign of him.
After the chat, Alice heads back to her AirBNB. She and her sister, Zoe, have yet to find a new place being new to the city, and she's still in bed. When she wakes up, she crushes up some pills.
3. What does Diane ask Alice and Zoe to give her?

Answer: Scissors

Alice and Zoe end up moving into an apartment owned by Louise Lispector, a woman who invites them in with a non-nonsense attitude, but the girls first meet another woman with more concerning words for them. The other woman, Diane, asks the girls if they have any scissors so that she can remove her bandages though the girls don't see her wearing any bandages. Diane also warns the girls not to leave the neighbourhood, at least not down past the park, because the people in Butcher's Block will cut them up like a pizza and eat every slice. Louise claims that Diane is 99% harmless.
4. Louise keeps a pet named Andre in the house. What type of animal is it?

Answer: Cat

Alice and Zoe leave their things and start looking around the house, Louise talks about her past as an investigative reporter (back when that used to be a job, she says) and Alice expresses her interest in becoming a social worker, specifically a family advocate, to support low income families in the city.

After a quick introduction to Louise's hairless cat, Andre, the girls are taken to their new room. Alice gets a call from her frantic mother who, a week too late, wishes her a happy birthday.

Her mother asks where they moved, but Alice refuses to tell her. She begs to be taken out of the institution where they had to leave her, but Alice won't do it. The conversation ends there.
5. What phrase is used to describe the socioeconomic status of the Butcher's Block neighbourhood?

Answer: Sacrifice Zone

During the girls' first night in the new house, Louise works in the basement, performing taxidermy on a new project. Alice comes down to chat, asking that Louise not offer Zoe any drinks during their stay because she's in addiction recovery, and Louise agrees but insists that she not be bothered.

The girls, she says, are just renters and she never had kids by choice. The next day, when Alice starts her new job, she's immediately driven into the Butcher's Block neighbourhood to be present for a CPS visit. On the drive through she asks about Peach's Meats and she's told that its owner, Joseph Peach, disappeared many years ago and the local meat packaging industry fell to pieces in his absence.

It led Butcher's Block to become a 'sacrifice zone'-- a socioeconomic dead zone with little funding. Once again, she's encouraged to avoid going to Butcher's Block alone or at night.
6. What is written on the tag inside Izzy's outfit?

Answer: Smart Mouth

At her first field job, Alice has to deal with a mother whose child is going to be taken away by CPS. The woman claims that her daughter, Izzy, was bit by a dog in the park and though Nathan doesn't care whether or not this happened, Alice tries to calm down the mother with a story of her own.

This does the trick. During this time, Alice seems to sense something odd. None of them know that there's someone inside the walls. Alice leaves the room and follows the noises through the hollow structure until she reaches Izzy's room.

The girl seems to be wearing a red robe with the label 'Smart Mouth' inside. Alice asks about this and Izzy says she found it on the playground at the park.
7. Izzy and her mother go missing while Alice and Nathan are at their house.

Answer: True

Izzy's house proves to be a bit weirder for Alice when, while talking to Izzy, she sees an ominous hole in the wall behind her. Izzy admits that when she gets scared she hides in the park by 'the lady tree' and asks that Alice try to protect her and her mother. Alice says she will as she goes to inspect the noises coming from the hole in the wall.

She calls Nathan in, asserting there's something in there, but while they investigate, it seems that someone closes and locks the door to the room. They break out after hearing a scream, but both Izzy and her mother are gone by the time they get out. Later, the police think it's a case of a mother taking her child before CPS can. Alice thinks otherwise.
8. Zoe refers to her insidious onset as which of these?

Answer: The beginning of the end

Back at the new apartment, Zoe crushes more pills before venturing out for a walk. Louise greets her from a seat outside and invites her over for a chat and a smoke. Louise lets Zoe take a drag off her blunt despite knowing her sister's drug concerns. Zoe waxes on about her insidious onset, referring to the beginning of the end of her life that started when she was twenty-six. That night, Zoe and Alice discuss the day's events. Alice knows that something happened to Izzy and her mother. Alice remembers what Izzy said about 'the lady tree' and the two of them drive into Butcher's Block to investigate on their own, even though both girls had been told not to go at night.

When they arrive, Diane finds them almost immediately and informs them that she found a pair of scissors and cut off her bandages.

She claims that someone seems to have bind them as well and before she can harm them with her blades, they run into Izzy's house. While Zoe washes the blood off her hands in the bathroom, she has horrible visions of Diane.
9. Who is the first to see the staircase?

Answer: Zoe

Alice wanders into the nearby Medallion Park and finds the lady tree next to an old playground. Underneath, she finds a wooden fort containing toys and an old hand axe. She doesn't notice someone stalking behind her, and when he emerges he turns out to be an older man.

He introduces himself as Joseph and claims to have owned the park long ago. Soon after, he departs in the darkness. While Alice walks off, Zoe watches out the front of Izzy's house with a cigarette. She spies someone small and dressed in a dark robe and, as they run through the back alleys behind the house, she gives chase all the way to the same park.

The chase leads into the forest and she finally catches up to the figure at the bottom of a long, white staircase leading up to a door.

The figure at the bottom eats into a cat while she watches, and as she falls back in horror, he stalks her with a meat tenderizer. But something stops him. She opens her eyes when a light and the sound of jazz-classical music emerges from the door atop the staircase, and on the stairs is a horrifying, humanoid creature made of torn flesh.

The two walk through the door and she's left alone. When she blinks, the staircase disappears.
10. If Joseph Peach were alive today, according to Louise, he would be how old?

Answer: 130

Zoe returns to Izzy's house to find Alice sitting on the front stoop and the two worriedly embrace. When they get back to the apartment, Zoe packs her things and admits to seeing something. Alice worries that it's just Zoe's addiction causing her to see things and she refuses to go back home, but Zoe realizes she's turning twenty-six and just afraid of her own insidious onset, just like what happened to her and their mother. There's nothing she can do about it though. Nonetheless, Zoe leaves with her things.
Alice heads downstairs to speak to Louise and the two of them discuss Louise's book; she's been writing for years about the disappearances in Butcher's Block. Louise believes that the Peach family might be behind it. In 1952, they all disappeared, but Louise thinks that they all stayed around to kill. Alice recognizes one of them as Joseph, from the park. He would be 130 year old if he were still alive.
Zoe, meanwhile, heads out to catch the bus. None other than Joseph speaks to her there, introducing himself while wiping the corners of his mouth with a napkin.
