Skipper is not US Navy Officer Rank. The crew of the '73 would often refer to McHale as "Skip" or "Skipper". While sometimes referred to as Commander McHale, his true rank was Lt. Commander.

McHale and the crew took a less formal approach when talking about the Capt., "Leadbottom". Wally had a whole list of terms to describe McHale and his crew such as "cutthroats", "pirates", "bandits", "highwaymen", "yo-yos" and "brigands".
