Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What musician wrote the theme song for "The West Wing" and scores most of the original music for the show?

Answer: W.G. "Snuffy" Walden

Snuffy Walden has scored many shows, starting with "thirtysomething" and including "The Wonder Years," "Ellen," "Sisters," "Once & Again," and "My So-Called Life," among others. He won an Emmy award for his theme to "The West Wing." Alexander, Elfman, and Silvestri all also compose music for television and film.
2. Which song from Dire Straits can be heard as the President and his people are moving from the White House to the press conference at the end of the second season finale, "Two Cathedrals"?

Answer: Brothers in Arms

This scene came after the President had attended the funeral of his beloved secretary, Mrs. Landingham, and appeared on television to announce that he has Multiple Sclerosis. At the press conference, the question everyone wanted answered was would he be seeking a second term. As we now know, he did seek and win a second term.
3. The finale to the third season also featured some moving music. What song was played as C.J. finds out that Agent Donovan has been killed?

Answer: Hallelujah

The song "Hallelujah" was written by Leonard Cohen and has been covered many times, but the Jeff Buckley version was the one used in "Posse Comitatus" after the death of Agent Donovan (played by Mark Harmon). All of the wrong answers are phrases from the song.
4. Music played a significant plot point in the episode "Noel" where Josh's post-traumatic stress from being shot comes to light. What musician appeared in that episode as himself, performing a holiday concert in the White House?

Answer: Yo-Yo Ma

The cellist Yo-Yo Ma performed in this episode where music served as a trigger to set off Josh's PTSD because in his head he was hearing the music as sirens, which took him back to the night he was shot.
5. What musical theatre duo's song, "He is an Englishman," was used in the episode "And It's Surely to Their Credit" in an attempt to cheer up Ainsley Hayes after she had been harassed by two staffers (who Sam fired because of their behavior)?

Answer: Gilbert & Sullivan

Sam, Josh, Toby, and C.J. lined the halls to Ainsley's office with Gilbert & Sullivan posters and played this song as she came downstairs to give her support after a very hard first day on the job as Assistant White House Counsel. We also learn in this episode that Sam was the Recording Secretary of the Princeton Gilbert & Sullivan Society for two years in college.
6. In the first season episode "Six Meetings Before Lunch" C.J. gives a lip-sync performance of a song in celebration of the confirmation of Mendoza to the Supreme Court. What song is it?

Answer: The Jackal

Apparently, Aaron Sorkin saw Allison Janney perform along with this song in her trailer on the set and he decided he wanted to work it into the show. It's quite funny, and Janney does a fabulous act to the song. The song is from the Ronnie Jordan album "The Quiet Revolution." As in Q3, all of the wrong answers are phrases from the song.
7. In the episode "Dead Irish Writers" the First Lady has a song played at her birthday party as a joke for Donna, who had been having some difficulties with the Secret Service and the Immigration and Nationalization Service earlier in the day. What song was played?

Answer: O Canada

There was a snafu where the area in Wisconsin where Donna grew up was actually part of Canada. It was all resolved by the end of the episode, but the First Lady didn't know that when she arranged for "O Canada" to be played. The President had been out of the room and was very confused to hear this being played, exclaiming "I was gone forty-five minutes! They were all Americans when I left." Donna's response was, "I know exactly how you feel, Mr. President."
8. Which of the following lines from the Don Henley song "New York Minute" was used as the title of the second season episode where Sam found out that his father has been having an affair for the past 28 years?

Answer: Somebody's Going to Emergency, Somebody's Going to Jail

This episode also involved the yearly "Big Block of Cheese Day" where all sorts of groups that wouldn't normally gain an audience at the White House are invited to meet with staffers. C.J.'s meeting is with a group called "Cartographers for Social Equality," who believe that the world maps commonly used should be replaced with the Peters Projection map, whose layout of the continents is quite different than the maps we are used to.

When the CSE people flip the map upside down, it freaks out C.J.
9. In the episode "Bartlet's Third State of the Union," what song was playing as Ainsley meets the President for the first time?

Answer: Blame It on the Bossa Nova

Ainsley was dressed in a robe (because she had gotten paint on her clothes), drinking a Pink Squirrel, and dancing with Sam when the President walks into her office for their first introduction. She is so mortified that she convinces Sam to set up another opportunity for her to meet the President.

He does, but at that meeting (held in Leo's office) she is so nervous that she excuses herself to go to the bathroom and accidently enters a closet when the President comes in to Leo's office, leading to a second embarrassing meeting.
10. In the third season episode "Gone Quiet" we have to suspend our disbelief a bit to believe that C.J. had never heard this song before, but it's worth it to see her sing it to Toby when she was pumped up about the report that the House Majority Leader had flubbed when asked if he intended to run for President. What song was this?

Answer: I'm Too Sexy

This song by Right Said Fred does get stuck in your head once you hear it. C.J. heard this song on the radio early in the episode and had a discussion with her assistant Carol to try to understand it. C.J. asks Carol what the song is about. Carol tells her the title, and C.J. says, "Yeah, for his shirt, he's too sexy." Carol says, "Other things, too." C.J. says that "He lists them." Carol replies that she thinks he's feeling good and sexy. C.J. notes that he's actually feeling "Too sexy."
