Released in 1950, "Baby Wants Spinach" was written by Carl Meyer and Jack Mercer (the voice of Popeye). It is my favourite of the colour cartoons from Famous Studios Paramount Pictures. Let's see how well you remember it.

Popeye is walking over to visit Olive Oyl his longtime girlfriend. He's seen carrying a box of chocolates and flowers for her hoping for a date but, it doesn't quite turn out that way.

2. Popeye enters Olive's house. She tells him that he's just in time to mind someone. Who does Popeye have to mind?

Answer: Cousin Swee'Pea

Olive is about to go out shopping and her cousin Swee'Pea is a baby that needs minding. Olive was voiced by Mae Questell and she also did Swee'Pea's crying sound effects.

Answer: He's nearly run over by a trolley

Luckily Popeye rushes outside and smashes the trolley car, preventing Swee'Pea's death.

Answer: He follows the ball onto a bridge

Popeye to the rescue yet again and this time it's Popeye's neck that becomes trapped inside the bridge while Swee'Pea calmly follows the ball again.

Popeye prevents the elephant from stepping on Swee'Pea by pulling the elephant's tail though he becomes squashed instead of the baby.

Popeye saves the day yet again. After the lion, he saves Swee'Pea from alligators by bashing them and turning them into suitcases, but the baby manages to creep away again.

The gorilla sees Swee'Pea playing with the ball and snatches it away. Popeye rushes in to grab Swee'Pea away from the "Chipmunk" as he calls the gorilla. The huge beast grabs Popeye and holds him up by a leg bashing him onto the floor of the cage. He steps on Popeye's spinach can and the weed flies into Swee'Pea's mouth. Then, it's Swee'Pea's turn to rescue Popeye.

9. Swee'Pea now powered by the spinach looks into the cage with anger as he sees the gorilla subduing Popeye. What is the gorilla doing to Popeye to subdue him?

The gorilla has an unusually HUGE chest that he has expanded and is bouncing it onto Popeye's feet. Swee'Pea twirls his fist, punches the gorilla in the chest and the punch slams him into a wall and he splits into the three smaller monkeys: See no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil.

Swee'Pea is playing with the ball; birds fly by and he's also in the living room and passes the ball to the lion and the elephant. And then we iris out for the end.
