At the beginning of the episode, Sam was trying to convince Toby that they should base the Thanksgiving proclamation around a pilgrim detective series. Toby's response was "Do you see me laughing?" and Sam replied, "I think you're laughing on the inside."

C.J informed Toby and Sam, "I'm the Thanksgiving cruise director around here." Sam asks her why she wasn't stressed out last year and she told him that she was sent home ill but Sam didn't remember. C.J's response was "That's 'cause every time we come up on a holiday, you guys check out like seniors who are done with finals" and then Josh walks in to tell them about the nickel to which C.J gives a look that says 'You get my point'.

Josh asked Leo what he was doing for Thanksgiving and when Leo said he was spending it with the First Family. Josh was worried that they may all get invited. Later on in the episode, President Bartlet tells Josh "the Latin word for yam is dioscorea."

Donna informed C.J that she would have to choose between two turkeys so that the President could pardon one but when the other turkey has to go C.J gets upset. She asks the President if he will pardon another turkey and he says, "Aren't I gonna get a reputation for being soft on turkeys?"

Toby wanted to put Leo's sister Josephine on the recess appointment list to become Assistant Secretary of Primary and Secondary Education but Leo warns that if they put forward Josephine then the argument on school prayer will crop up. Toby wants the argument on school prayer to come up to help the child that is singled out for sitting out prayer at school.

C.J needed to know the song that she would have to lead the children in so she asks for Donna's help. Donna asks her, "Didn't you go to elementary school?" and C.J dryly remarks, "Yes, right before being a National Merit Scholar."

Another storyline in this episode was that eighty-three Chinese citizens fled their country to escape prosecution and placed themselves in a ship that headed for the west coast of the US. There was much debate as to what to do with the asylum seekers, China said they had to go back and the Christian church called for them to remain in the US.

Mrs. Landingham teased the President about not being able to use the intercom when he came out to ask for the Thanksgiving proclamation. The President defended himself by saying, "I was standing at the door" and that's why he didn't use the intercom.

This was such a lovely moment in the episode when the President gave Charlie the carving knife that his father had given him. Charlie was taken aback and deeply touched when the President said, "I'm proud of you, Charlie."

The President asked the Governor of California to stand down the National Guard so that the Chinese asylum seekers could escape. The Chinese asylum seeker that the President met with passed his test by saying "Shibboleth" but he told Josh he wouldn't have sent them back even if he didn't pass the test.
