Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How long ago was Kara Zor-El sent from her home planet to Earth?

Answer: 24 years

Kara Zor-El, who was 13 years old at the time she was sent to protect her younger cousin, was caught in the neutral zone and had her trip delayed.

By the time she arrived on Earth Kal-El was a grown man who had adopted the name "Superman" and was protecting the world.
2. How was Kara Zor-El related to Superman?

Answer: cousins

In the opening sequence of the pilot Kara's Kryptonian parents told her she was headed to Earth where she would need to protect her baby cousin Kal-El.

Once on Earth, Kara, a teenager, was placed with the Danvers family to be raised. Much like Kal had been adopted by the Kent family.
3. How old was Kara when she got into the spaceship and left Krypton?

Answer: 13 years old

Kara's Kryptonian parents explained to her that she would have untold powers under the Earth's yellow sun before putting her on the ship.

She was in stasis during the entire trip, so when she arrived on Earth she was still only 13 years old.
4. What was the last name of the family that took in Kara?

Answer: Danvers

All four are names from the "Superman" or "Supergirl" universe.

The Danvers took her in during this series. Kent is the name of the family that took in Kal-El.

White is the last name of the editor of "The Daily Planet" and Grant is the last name of Kara's boss as an adult.
5. Appearing in only one shot, who played Kara's Earthbound father?

Answer: Dean Cain

Cain was cast as Jeremiah Danvers both for his acting prowess and his ties to the "Superman" universe. He played the role of Clark Kent/Superman on " Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman".

Eliza Danvers was also a piece of stunt casting with Helen Slater getting the role. Slater played Kara/Supergirl in the 1984 film of the same name.
6. The character of Cat Grant is portrayed as a rude, yet powerful, woman in the "Supergirl" pilot.

Answer: True

7. What city is the show set in?

Answer: National City

8. Jimmy Olsen is portrayed as a Pulitzer Prize winner when he is introduced. For what did he win the award?

9. What was Kara doing when she saw that there was an airplane that needed to be saved?

Answer: on a date

Kara was on a blind date and saw the announcement on the news. She used her x-ray vision to see that Alex was on the plane and sprung into action. It was that event that caused her to decide to become a hero.
10. What is the name of the newspaper that CatCo operates?

Answer: The Tribune

"The Daily Planet" is from the "Superman" mythos. "The Gotham Gazzette" is from the "Batman" mythos and "The Daily Prophet" is from "Harry Potter".

The name of the paper is mentioned several times throughout the episode.
11. What was Kara's job at CatCo?

Answer: personal assistant

Kara was Cat Grant's personal assistant.

When Kara decided to don a costume and become Supergirl she did it in part because she "didn't come to National City to be an assistant".

She meant that in two ways, she wanted to become a respected member of the staff at CatCo and also to make a difference as a hero.
12. To which of her coworkers did Kara reveal her secret identity?

Answer: Winn Schott

Winn Schott was a tech expert at CatCo and Kara's closest work friend.

The morning after she made her appearance to save the airplane she told him that it was her. Then, when he didn't believe her, she proved it to him.

Another coworker, James Olsen, also knew her secret by the end of the episode, but she didn't tell him. He revealed that Superman had sent him there to watch over her.
13. What government agency does Hank Henshaw work for?

Answer: Department of Extra-Normal Operations

Henshaw is the head of the department which was started in response to Kara's arrival on Earth.

Henshaw revealed that when her ship broke out of the neutral zone it took Fort Rozz out with it.

Fort Rozz was a Kryptonian prison ship with dozens of criminals.
14. Who played the titular character?

Answer: Melissa Benoist

Benoist had been a cast member of "Glee" and made several other guest appearances on shows before being cast as Kara Danvers/Supergirl.

She also had been in movies such as "Whiplash" and "The Longest Ride".
15. At the end of the episode James Olsen gave Kara a gift from Superman. What was it?

Answer: A new cape

The small box that Olsen gave her on the roof of CatCo contained the blanket that Kal-El had been in when he arrived on Earth.

The blanket had been fashioned into a cape. Superman told Olsen to tell Kara that that one wouldn't shred like the one she had used previously in the episode.
