Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Owen, which of these, in addition to the past, could not be relied on?

Answer: The future

Ms. Grose knew, going into the bonfire on the night of Owen's mother's funeral, that deep experience was never peaceful. She would always find her way back to peace in their daily routine. Owen told her, that night, that no one could rely on the past; memories could fade or be wrong and any of them could die or forget at any time. Because of that, they couldn't count on their future either. They would only have the present.
Owen admitted that it was all a bit of a relief; he would be untethered whether he wanted to or not. He could go back to Paris...and she could come with him.
That was when Jamie and Dani returned to the bonfire and ended the night.
2. Owen took which job when he was in Paris?

Answer: Sous chef

Hannah remembered the day Owen arrived at Bly Manor, cheerily introducing himself with a handshake in the kitchen. She was the one who interviewed him for the chef role though that clearly wasn't her forte. She noted that his experience as a sous chef in Paris might have made the job a bit less appealing, but he admitted he was back in Bly to take care of his mother as well; it was a convenient job where he could practice his craft.

He asked if she'd ever read Thomas Merton (she hadn't), who believe that if you could get past consciousness and identity and everything occupying the front of the brain, you could reach a transcendence.

He just meant that he was learning a lot. Unfortunately, she was pulled away from that interview, called to from another room, and when she left that memory...she seemed shifted elsewhere.
3. Hannah had not always been a live-in staff member at Bly Manor.

Answer: True

On a day when the Wingraves were expected back in Bly Manor, Hannah prepared the building for them and met them at the front door upon their arrival. Peter was amongst the group that arrived that day. While the Wingraves seemed delighted to see her, Peter was his brooding self, of course.
But as Hannah turned to head inside, she opened the front door to find herself in a darkened house in the middle of the night. Instead of going in, she walked down the driveway and cried out, catching the attention of Mrs. Wingrave. Mrs. Wingrave, asking if Hannah was okay, wondered why she hadn't headed back to the village yet, but what information she could get led her to believe that she had been dealing with a rough break-up. She offered, then, that she could stay at Bly Manor, indefinitely if she wanted to.
Hannah next found herself standing in the woods watching Miles come up behind Jamie and dangerously shake a ladder she'd been working on.
...Before she found herself talking to Owen back at the bonfire. "No one can count on their past or their future."
4. Hannah once caught Peter stealing which of these from the master bedroom?

Answer: Necklace

Hannah, cleaning Bly Manor with the vacuum, recalled Peter Quint's return to the house after his argument with Rebecca. Returning a while later, he seemed to have forgotten the batter incident. He apologized while Hannah watched quietly from the door and Rebecca forgave him. When Peter caught Hannah gossiping bit, he offered her a bit of advice-- she just needed to live a little. It was then that she noticed a crack in the wall.
On another night, Hannah caught Peter stealing jewellery from the forbidden wing. It led to him reasoning with her that neither of them were part of the Wingrave family; it would always be 'us' and 'them. Their lives would always go on, but someday they would no longer require their services. Peter warned her that she should be a bit nicer to him since a word from him could send her packing. She disagreed; Bly Manor was her home and he would leave long before her.
When Peter left the bedroom, Hannah found the footsteps in the foyer and followed them outside to the pond to find Ms. Jessel standing at its shallow edge.
5. Which item did Peter give to Miles?

Answer: Lighter

Hannah was brought back to her interview with Owen and, as he talked about being a sous chef, she got the feeling of deja vu. When she brought this up, Owen said that he knew they were saying the same thing over again, but it was for a good reason; they had to do it again. During this version of the conversation, Owen asked about the children and Hannah stated that Miles, while picky, was a good, sweet boy despite being a bit of trouble. The conversation took a turn then, as Owen asked if he would ever be cruel. Hannah insisted-- Miles would never hurt her.
Hannah later found Miles out on the driveway beginning to smoke a cigarette. Miles, with Peter's lighter in hand, simply ran off defiantly.
Hannah followed him to the chapel but it seemed like she'd lost him, instead stumbling into another place and time as she ran into Mrs. Wingrave. It was fortunate-- Mrs. Wingrave wanted to ask if Hannah was interested in making her position live-in. She could sell her house, build a nest-egg, and come to terms with her relationship with Sam.
But that memory changed too.
6. Hannah spoke with Rebecca in the chapel once, about Peter. It was then that Hannah admitted which of these?

Answer: That Peter frightened her

Partway through her talk with Mrs. Wingrave, Hannah recalled another chat in the chapel, this one with Rebecca. Rebecca once claimed to be a daddy's girl, but her father never really allowed her to pursue the dreams she wanted to. She told Hannah that when anyone found someone who saw them for smart and capable, they needed to hold on and never let go even if they weren't perfect. Rebecca had never met someone like Peter, but Hannah had always been frightened of him. Rebecca claimed that she scared him too, but in the best way, before storming off. Hannah tried to pursue her out of the chapel, but found when she opened its doors, they were blocked by a stone wall, and while she should have been there alone, Miles had reappeared, this time flicking Peter's lighter at the chapel altar.
7. Hannah recalled the instance when Bly Manor had a mouse problem. What was the solution their gardener put in place?

Answer: Glue traps

Back in the kitchen, Owen attempted to get Rebecca to taste test his food but, knowing Peter's attitude, she refused. When Peter stole away with Rebecca shortly after, it gave Hannah the opportunity to chat with Owen about a mouse problem the house once had.

The old gardener used to put out glue traps despite Hannah's insistence on a humane solution. She once found a trap with nothing more than a leg inside; a mouse chewed its own leg off to escape. Peter Quint, she claimed, was a glue trap. And when Rebecca realized it, she wouldn't get out okay. Discombobulated, Hannah returned to the interview with Owen.

She suggested that they would need a cook on hand who wouldn't go running off and he claimed that was fine, eventually he'd be stuck in Bly like a mouse in a glue trap.

She believed they'd had this conversation before; he claimed they hadn't yet, technically, though he thought about it for weeks after they did. He wondered if mice knew when it was already over...or if people did.
8. Where, according to Peter, could he and Rebecca achieve their dreams?

Answer: The United States

Hannah found herself in Rebecca's room one night, eavesdropping on a conversation between her and Peter in which he told his lover that he never had love or safety in his life until he found her. He claimed he was going to do something big for the two of them; they were never going to be like them-- Wingrave would never give her the pupillage and him the partnership.

They could go to the United States and be anything they wanted. He told her to pack her bags and not tell anyone; they would be leaving the next day.

He just had to do one thing first. When Peter departed from the room, he walked right by Hannah, seeming to ignore her completely, but Rebecca saw her clearly. This was one of her favourites, she said, but she rarely came back around to it.

He was the most himself in this memory before it all went bad. She'd never seen Hannah in it before though. As Hannah turned to leave, Rebecca warned her not to go; this, she claimed, was likely when it all happened.
9. Did Peter Quint die while he stayed at Bly Manor?

Answer: Yes

Leaving Rebecca's room, Hannah saw Peter heading to the forbidden wing as the children stirred from their rooms, afraid of something odd happening with Flora's dollhouse. Peter grabbed another piece of jewellery from the master bedroom and made to depart, but it forced him to cross paths with the ghost responsible for leaving the footprints in the house. Grabbing Peter by the neck, the spectre choked and dragged him back into the forbidden wing while the children watched on...and a few moments later he strode back out, suggesting they head back to bed. Flora, however, showed him the doll she found in her house-- the lady from the lake, who she'd been keeping under her dresser.

As he tried to hold the doll it seemed to pass right through his hand for a moment.

The others, Flora claimed, said to stay away from the lady from the lake. That was when the spectre came back, dragging Peter's physical body down the stairs and out the front door. In anger, Peter screamed out at the ghost and, in doing so, grabbed Miles' shoulder, causing him to transfer himself to the boy's body.

In that moment, it was clear he could possess the child. Hannah followed the spirit outside and to the lake where it dragged the corpse into the murky water and submerged there. When all was stilled, Hannah turned around to find Rebecca, soaking wet and staring at her.
10. Where was Hannah when she first met Dani at Bly Manor?

Answer: At the well

All of this brought Hannah back to the interview with Owen. While we was a sous chef before, he restated, being in Bly Manor could help him put things together in a way he couldn't before. They both acknowledged that they'd been going over the same memories since it happened, surely. She'd been having horrible dreams-- other peoples' dreams. Dreams of things that had yet to happen. Owen clarified the situation as best as he could: the year was 1986; the Wingrave parents had died; Rebecca had died; Peter was missing; something was wrong with Miles.
And it was certainly true. On the day a new governess planned to arrive at Bly Manor, Miles put out a cigarette and headed out into the woods while Hannah followed at a distance. There, by the manor's well, she found Miles meeting with none other than Peter Quint. Once again, she witnessed as Peter possessed the boy before disappearing and using Miles as a vessel. Peter, however, realized that he could never leave Bly Manor; he couldn't because he died. In a rage, Peter, acting through Miles, pushed Hannah into the dried well, breaking her neck at the bottom. The last thing she saw when she died was a crack in the stone wall. Miles, awakening from his possession, asked her what was wrong as she stood over the well at her body inside. Fortunately for them, it was also moments away from Dani's arrival. Flora brought her along for introductions and snapped them out of their momentary confusion.

We can't count on the past, Owen stated to Hannah at the bonfire. While people may think that they have trapped the past in their mind, it could always fade. Paris, he reminded her; she could be there. She could live in the moment. In her mind, she remembered saying yes. But then she remembered she didn't, and Jamie took Owen home.

As she chased after them in her memory, Hannah had to stop and pause to remind herself: She is Hannah Grose. The year is 1987 and she is at Bly. Miles is 10; Flora is 8.
