Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Miles toss Flora's talisman?

Answer: Into a laundry chute

Ms. Grose was no stranger to footprints in the house, having mopped up the same trail from outside to the forbidden wing and back again several times in any given year. While she cleaned, Dani spoke with the children as they explained the door to Flora's closet got stuck while she was trapped inside.

She forgave the children, but didn't believe them. Ending the conversation, Flora removed the talisman out from under her dresser and it was quickly swiped away by Miles who, angrily, tossed it into a laundry chute at the end of the hall.

He was punished by taking over Ms. Grose's mopping.
2. Which part of the house did Flora refer to as "dreadful"?

Answer: The cellar

Flora and Dani headed to the cellar and crossed paths with Owen, making breakfast, in the kitchen. There, Flora expressed her dislike for the cellar ("dreadful!") and asked to stay back. No problem, according to Dani. While Flora stayed back for some orange juice, she would contend with locating the talisman, even with the lights on the stairwell not working. Dani found the talisman uncannily sitting upright at the bottom of the laundry chute, and when she took a look around the dark basement she didn't see anything of particular note besides a corner filled with creepy dolls.

As she raced upstairs, she didn't notice one of the dolls turning to look at her exit. Heading back upstairs, Flora let Dani know that the talisman didn't work, much to her disappointment.
3. How did Miles break his arm at boarding school?

Answer: He jumped from a tree

It was only after returning the talisman to Flora that Dani searched the house for Miles who, finishing his mopping, seemed to be lost in a daydream in the children's classroom. He was recalling an event from six months earlier, back when he was still attending boarding school, heading back for spring term. During a lesson on gospels, he was made aware of a classmate's recent injury preventing him returning to class and he engaged with the lesson of the day, interestingly about man's fallibility.

After the class, Miles' teacher had mail for him (from Flora, unsurprisingly) and he took the opportunity to open the room to him as a safe haven, especially considering the loss of his parents and governess. That day, climbing a tree out in the school yard, Miles had what could only be regarded as an accident...or so it would be called...as he leapt from the top.
4. Ultimately, Miles' efforts at school were devoted to which of these, a reason for his inevitable expulsion?

Answer: 'Finding the right key'

Miles, returning to his dormitories after getting his arm placed into a sling, was fortunate to be given a bottom bunk by his bunkmate. When asked why he jumped, he initially said that he was "just looking for the right key", but he quickly took that back and claimed he fell.

As the days continued, Miles' behaviour continued to escalate. He would subsequently fight with his classmate, Cooper, knocking him out in a chokehold in the school. His teacher, Father Stack, took Miles' behaviour as his personal responsibility to ensure he wasn't expelled, but it proved tough when Miles wouldn't reveal the reason for his actions.

It was clear, however, that he was still very much affected by his parents' loss.
5. The final straw, resulting in Miles' expulsion, involved killing the class pet. It was which of these?

Answer: Bird

While tending to the school church, Father Stack became distracted by obvious sounds coming fro the rooms there. It wasn't until it was too late that he saw the results of Miles' acting out-- he killed the class pet, wringing its neck and placing it on the altar. Though the school sought to expel him, Father Stack was still convinced that he could be rehabilitated, especially since he knew a mark such as the killing of the bird would follow him wherever he went. Miles' remorse would lead to absolution, but it wouldn't go the distance.

The headmaster insisted on an apology, but Miles barely gave that, stating he was sorry he didn't do worse. His behaviour left them no choice. No one on the staff realized he was compelled to do what he did due to Flora's letter asking him to come home.
6. Where did Ms. Grose indicate there was a crack in the tiles?

Answer: In the kitchen

While Flora remained in her room fidgeting with her dolls, Miles finished cleaning his own. Dani, amazed by his efforts, immediately had him teach his sister how to do the same thing, continuing his light punishment. Down in the kitchen, Ms. Grose, distracted by a crack in the tiles around the hearth, spoke with Owen and Jamie about the new governess. All of them, surprised, noted that she was doing a great job as they headed out to the yard to watch her put the children to work de-weeding the gardens. Over a trio of relaxing gin and tonics (none for Ms. Grose-- "it's a sad drink"), the other employees engage in a bit of idle gossip. Ms. Grose brings up the crack in the tiles in the kitchen; Jamie says she'll look into it.
7. What item did Flora find amongst Dani's belongings?

Answer: A pair of broken glasses

Dani later returned to her room to find that Flora, continuing her cleaning spree, unpacked all of her governess' belongings and placed them into their proper drawers and cupboards. Amongst these items, however, was a pair of broken glasses that gave Dani significant pause. Excusing herself, she raced out of the house hyperventilating. Jamie found her struggling to cope outside the front entrance, lying a little bit about the situation. To Dani's surprise, Jamie had nothing but compliments for her efforts. Jamie headed inside though, heading immediately to the stove in the kitchen. What she found, however, was nothing. Ms. Grose's crack in the tiles simply wasn't there.
8. Along with an apology for his recent behaviour, Miles offered Dani which of these?

Answer: Flowers

Washing up in the bathroom, Dani glanced up at the mirror once again, somehow not expecting to see the figure with the glowing eyes watching her once again. She returned to the kitchen shortly after, cooking with the others. It's then that Miles asked to speak to her in private, pulling her from the room to apologize for everything-- the wardrobe, the mess in the hall-- and for being a child about it. During his apology, he reached up and pushed her hair behind her ear in an unsettling gesture, just enough to cause Dani concern.

The apology turned out to be a bit of a problematic one besides that; he picked flowers to give to her, but those flowers were ones Jamie planted in the garden. He effectively destroyed her work.
9. For their efforts in getting ready for bed, Dani allowed the children to play a game. Who elected to play hide and seek?

Answer: Flora

In the evening, Dani sent the children up to get ready for bed but promised that she would have a bit of a surprise for them after their preparations. She invited Ms. Grose but the housekeeper, a bit out of sorts, turned in, claiming she hadn't been sleeping well.

When Dani headed upstairs, she cleared the children for bed, but allowed them to pick one game to play before getting tucked in. Flora suggested hide and seek, so off they went. As all of the lights in the house were shut off, Dani counted to ten and started her search.

While Miles raced downstairs, Flora headed up. Dani ended up going downstairs first, searching the rooms, lit solely by moonlight, for any sign. She barely noticed the female figure watching from the hallway in the dark.
10. Did Dani manage to find either of the children in their hiding spots during their game of hide and seek?

Answer: No

Heading back upstairs in her search, Dani wandered into the forbidden wing in case they cheated and went to the off-limits area of the house. She picked up a family photo, spying it on a partially-uncovered table, before she was distracted by the sound of a music box in the children's parents' room. Up in the attic, Flora hummed the very same song to herself while a crawling spirit struggled to breathe behind her. The music stopped when Miles jumped on Dani's back in the bedroom. Squeezing her tightly, he informed her that it was her turn to hide while he sought her out.

As he ran off, she refused, turning on the lights and calling him back. Looking in the living room, she checked behind the curtain for either of the children but instead found a man's figure staring in the window at her.

She raced outside, firepoker in hand, to ward off the stranger, but she found no one out there in the rain. What she did find, however, was Miles, unconscious inside. Neither Dani nor Ms. Grose saw the male figure still watching them...but Miles did.
