Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 3, teams departed from Oxford, England, heading to what region of Scotland?

Answer: The Shetland Islands

Heading out from Blenheim Palace outside of Oxford in the start of Leg 3, teams were told to make their way upward through Scotland on an extensive journey, first by train to Aberdeen, then by car to a ferry terminal to make their way to the Shetland Islands, the archipelago at the top of the United Kingdom islands. Upon arriving, teams needed to drive themselves to Lerwick's Royal National Lifeboat Station to get their next clue. All nine teams took the same ferry.
2. Arriving at their first clue in Leg 3, teams needed to locate a person dressed up as which of the following local animals?

Answer: Puffin

Reaching the Royal National Lifeboat Station, teams were handed their clue by a local puffin before hopping back into their Ford Focuses, this time to locate Scalloway Castle on the southwestern coast of the Shetland mainland. When teams reached the castle, they had to search the grounds, inevitably ending up in the dungeon, to find their next clue amongst the bones and dust on the floor.

This would end up being their Detour task for this leg.
3. Which Detour task was completed by more teams in Scotland in Leg 3?

Answer: 'Pony Up'

After finding their clues at Scalloway Castle, teams needed to drive onward to their Detour task, a choice between either 'Pony Up' or 'Light My Fire'. In 'Pony Up', teams headed to a local peat hill to harvest fifty slabs of peat using traditional methods.

Then, they had to load the peat onto a Shetland Pony and lead it up the hillside, delivering it to a cabin. Misti and Jim, Kym and Alli, Shelley and Nici, Amy and Maya, and Adam and Bethany did this task. In 'Light My Fire', teams instead visited a hardware store and then headed to a galley shed to create a traditional Viking torch with the tools provided.

When they delivered their torch to a band of vikings they could continue on. Tim and Te Jay, Michael and Scott, Keith and Whitney, and Brooke and Robbie did this task.
4. In Leg 3 (in Scotland), how many sheep did teams need to herd?

Answer: Eight

After the Detour, teams were told to drive to the Berry Farm in Scalloway where both team members would need to select a marked pen and, using whatever means available to them, they had to herd eight sheep from one end of a pen, through three slanted gates, and into a metal pen in the center of the far end of their paddock. Provided they got through all three gates they did not need to start over completely should their sheep be the slightest bit uncooperative. Once all eight were in, they would receive their next clue-- a brooch-- and were told to find where it came from.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race in Scotland in Leg 3?

Answer: Michael and Scott

After the sheep-herding task, teams were told to find the location at which their brooches were originally found, St. Ninian's Island, where Phil and the local puffin mascot would be able to check them into their next Pit Stop overlooking their overnight campsite.

Here, Misti and Jim won their second leg of the race, this time taking with them a trip for two to Dubai, U.A.E. courtesy of Travelocity. The Save was still in their possession. In the end, injured firefighter team Michael and Scott, who accidentally went the wrong way to the Pit Stop, ended up checking in in ninth place, finding themselves eliminated.
6. In Leg 4, teams were told to fly to Copenhagen, Denmark. Upon arriving, they were then subsequently asked to drive to what nearby country?

Answer: Sweden

Leaving St. Ninian's Isle on the Shetland Islands of Scotland, the remaining eight teams were told to take the thirteen hour ferry back to Aberdeen and then catch the quickest flight over to the mainland to visit Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark.

When they arrived, the teams had to search through one of the airport parking lots for their vehicles-- brand new Ford C-Max hybrids-- and their next clues on the dashboard inside.
7. Teams failing to drive themselves to their first location within the rules stipulated by their clues in Leg 4 were forced to answer a trivia question about which of the following?

Answer: Capital cities

Reaching their vehicles in Copenhagen, teams were told to use their Ford C-Max hybrids to drive themselves across the eight kilometre long Oresund Bridge into Malmo, Sweden using the hybrid car's special fuel-conserving options. If they did so and arrived at their destination in Stortorget, Malmo having used less than 0.1 gallon of fuel, they would be awarded their next clue immediately, otherwise they had to head into Malmo to find and solve a trivia question asking for the capitals of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway to continue.
8. How many teams completed the 'Wedding Cake' Detour task in Leg 4 in Copenhagen, Denmark?

Answer: Three

Following their visit to Sweden, teams were told to return to Copenhagen for a detour task, this time choosing between 'Wedding Cake' and 'Parking Space'. In 'Wedding Cake', teams needed to head to a bakery and collect and finish building a tall layer cake known as a kransekage.

Then, they had to transport it through the city to a restaurant using a cargo bike on Copenhagen's extensive bike paths, ending up with the proper amount of flags and layers at the finishing point. Kym and Alli, Brooke and Robbie, and Misti and Jim completed this task.

In 'Parking Space', teams located a marked parklet in the streets of Copenhagen and, using a picture for reference, had to recreate a recreational space with provided materials. The other five teams completed this task which required a strong eye for detail.
9. During the Road Block in Leg 4 (in Copenhagen), team members entered the Ida Davidsen restaurant to memorize which of the following?

Answer: Sandwiches

Following the Detour, teams were required to make their way through Copenhagen to the famous Ida Davidsen restaurant specializing in open-faced sandwiches, and one member of each team needed to recall four famous faces, specifically the ingredients of four different sandwiches ordered by two different diners. Once they could recite the sandwich numbers and their ingredients to Ida then deliver the meals, they could receive their next clue. Kym, Maya, Robbie, Whitney, Te Jay, Adam, Nici, and Misti did this task.
10. Which team was last to arrive at the fourth Pit Stop in the race (in Copenhagen, Denmark)?

Answer: Misti and Jim

After the Road Block, teams were directed to the sustainable VM Houses in Copenhagen for their fourth Pit Stop. By arriving in Copenhagen two hours before the other teams, Kym and Alli won this leg of the race and, with it, two Ford C-Max Hybrids. In the end, despite being front-runners throughout the first three legs, Misti and Jim fell to pieces in Leg 4 and dropped to eighth and last place stepping on the mat.

While they were prepared to hand Phil their Save pass, they were granted a lucky reprieve; it was a non-elimination round.

They would, however, have to complete a Speed Bump in Leg 5.
