Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Commencing Leg 5, teams departed from what Southeast Asian nation?

Answer: Vietnam

Starting Leg 5 in the town of Ninh Binh, teams ripped open their clues to discover that they would be flying from Hanoi, Vietnam to Mongolia's capital city-- Ulaanbaatar. Upon arriving, teams would need to make their way to the top of the Zaisan War Memorial, three hundred steep stairs up the side of a large hill to the panoramic viewpoint. All eight remaining teams travelled on the same flights, making their way from Hanoi to Shenzen and then to Beijing en route to Ulaanbaatar.
2. In Ulaanbaatar in Leg 5, teams had to count which of these at the Gandan Temple?

Answer: Prayer wheels

After climbing to the heights of Ulaanbaatar, teams had to proceed to the city's Gandan Monastery, home to a twenty-ton Buddha statue, the biggest indoor statue in the world. Upon their arrival, teams needed to spin every prayer wheel in the building and then provide an accurate count to the head monk inside to get their next clue.

The final total of the prayer wheels was a staggering two hundred and eighty-seven. Finishing this task would send them straight to the Mongolian Desert.
3. In the Mongolian Desert in Leg 5, teams were invited to drink the milk of which of these?

Answer: Horse

Heading out from the temples of Ulaanbaatar, teams needed to go to the Dragon Bus Terminal to sign up (first-come-first-served) for one of three buses leaving for Mongol Els, a series of dunes in the Mongolian Gobi Desert. When they arrived at their destination they would be given a taste of nomadic Mongolian life, literally, by entering a nearby ger and needing to drink an entire bowl (each) of fermented horse's milk. Only after finishing their bowl could they get their Detour clue.
4. In Leg 5 (in Mongolia), which team completed the 'Milk the Best' Detour option?

Answer: Tim and Rod

At Khongorya Els, teams were handed their Detour, a choice between 'Milk the Best' and 'Herd the Rest', and in both tasks, teams had to complete daily nomadic chores involving goats. For 'Milk the Best', teams needed to engage with the goats a lot closer, milking them until they had enough to fill a container to a marked amount.

In 'Herd the Rest', teams instead had to wrangle goats, catching four the proper way and marking them with team colours. Although Jasmin and Jerome started the task, only Tim and Rod completed 'Milk the Best' with the other seven teams electing to complete the ore physical herding task.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race at the end of Leg 5?

Answer: Chris and Adrienne

Completing the Detour in this leg, teams received one final clue wherein one team member needed to hop on the back of a camel while their team member navigated their way through the dunes to the Pit Stop with nothing more than a compass. The track would take them about a kilometre in one direction before heading north to the mat.

When it all shook out, Jasmin and Jerome swapped Detours and Femi and Nick went the wrong way to the Pit Stop, allowing Tom and Tyler to catch up. It led to a three-way footrace in which Jasmin and Jerome were the first team to have all four feet on the mat, finally knocking Tom and Tyler out of the lead position. Near the back of the pack there was another close race between four teams that led Chris to fall off his camel. That was only part of the problem, however; Viv and Joey went the wrong direction.

They were only able to stay in the race because Chris broke several ribs in his fall. Chris and Adrienne were eliminated in eighth overall without checking into the Pit Stop.
6. Leg 6 commenced in Mongolia with teams needing to locate clues where?

Answer: Buried in sand dunes

Teams spent their night at the fifth Pit Stop in the Mongolian Desert, beginning Leg 6 with a clue telling them to direct vehicles into the Khongoryn Els Sand Dunes. Once there, teams needed to climb up to a marked area on the dunes and dig for their next clue found within one of several boxes.

This task had a four hour time limit due to the Gobi's extreme temperatures, and if teams couldn't locate their clue in that time, they would incur a two hour penalty at the next Pit Stop. Two teams took this penalty.
7. Team members completing the Road Block in Mongolia in Leg 6 were asked to wrestle professional fighters.

Answer: False

Opening the boxes atop the dunes, teams found a Road Block to wrestle with. For this task, the selected team member was required to jump into the ring with Mongolian wrestlers, learning a chant normally performed before a bout. Once they could properly recite and dance to the chant, they would be offered a wrestler's hat and their next clue. Sid, Tim, Jerome, Joey, Tom, Nick, and Hayley completed this task before returning to Ulaanbaatar.
8. Which team did not complete the 'Dance' Detour option in Mongolia in Leg 6?

Answer: Viv and Joey

After the Road Block, teams obtained a Detour clue, and this time it was between the simply named 'Dance' and 'Deliver' options, both back in Ulaanbaatar. In 'Dance', teams traveled to the Ulaanbaatar Ensemble Theatre to learn an intricate traditional folk dance known as Durvun Oird, and only when they could do so onstage, properly, could they receive their next clue. Sid and Ash, Tim and Rod, Tom and Tyler, Femi and Nick, and Hayley and Mikayla completed this task.
9. In the 'Deliver' Detour option in Leg 6, teams had to deliver which of the following items in a Mongolian market?

Answer: Oven

In the 'Deliver' Detour option, teams without the ability to dance had the option to do some heavy lifting in Ulaanbaatar's Narantuul Market. For this task, they needed to navigate the thousands of stalls to grab and deliver dozens of boots, several items of furniture, and a full oven, assembling the items that required as much along the way, to receive their next clue.

This one was completed by Jasmin and Jerome and Viv and Joey while everyone else finished 'Dance'.
10. Which team was eliminated in seventh place at the end of Leg 6 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia?

Answer: Hayley and Mikayla

Upon completion of one of two tough Detour tasks, the teams received clues directing them to their sixth Pit Stop at the Chingisiin Khuree Camp and the world's largest ger on the edge of Ulaanbaatar (through horrible traffic caused by a foreign dignitary's motorcade).

The first team to follow through and arrive at the Pit Stop before the other teams ended up being Sid and Ash who, though they fell behind during the Detour, navigated to the mat the quickest, beating out Tim and Rod and Jasmin and Jerome. Nick and Femi and Hayley and Mikayla were forced to wait out two hour penalties before checking into the Pit Stop.

It dropped them to the back of the pack. The boys were able to check in and wait out their penalty before Hayley and Mikayla even arrived to start the clock; the girls were eliminated.
