For her entire life up until the third season of "Friends", Phoebe thought that Lily, who had killed herself when Phoebe was young, was her natural mother. While there, it was revealed that Phoebe Abbott, played by Teri Garr, had given birth to Phoebe Buffay and her twin sister Ursula, and had given the babies to Frank and Lily to raise.

Jack Geller, Monica and Ross' father, was played by Elliot Gould. His secret smoking habit was revealed in the seventh season, in "TOW Rosita Dies". Monica and Ross had gone over to their parents house to retrieve their boxes of childhood stuff because Jack and Judy were selling their house.

In the garage, Ross found a pack of cigarettes, which Jack originally said must have belonged to Judy. After realizing that all of Monica's boxes had been destroyed by a flood, Jack was stressed and asked Ross "You don't secretly smoke, do you?" and when Ross said no, Jack replied "So it's only your mother then..." And a little later on, he said "Screw it, I'm having one" and lit up.

Nora, a novelist, was on "Jay Leno" promoting her new book in "TOW Mrs. Bing". While the "Friends" were watching her performance, she told Jay that she was going to New York City to visit her son Chandler, and that was how Chandler found out she was coming. Morgan Fairchild played Nora in this episode and again in season seven, when Monica and Chandler got married.
