Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Laura Palmer and Bobby Briggs were the town's fairytale high-school couple. Unfortunately, Laura cheated on Bobby with a variety of men. But that's okay, because he cheated on her, too, with a married woman. What was the name of the man that Bobby cuckolded? Hint - there's a "J" in his name.

Answer: Leo Johnson

Yes, Leo Johnson, husband of Shelley. That Bobby Briggs has got cojones. Of all the people. Of all the people he could have an affair with, he fools around with the wife of Leo "Creepy Psychopath" Johnson.

How it all ends up: Leo unsuccessfully tries to kill them both - Bobby with an axe and Shelley by tying her up and leaving her in a burning building.
2. The genius of David Lynch. In Benjamin Horne he created a character who could best be described as a dandy - but who was effortlessly menacing when his role as local business magnate/criminal bigwig demanded it. For years, Ben carried on an affair with another ruthless Machiavellian. Her surname was Martell, her Christian name was what?

Answer: Catherine

The devious Benjamin and the devious Catherine made devious love and plotted violent lucrative schemes. But perhaps because he tired of her, or perhaps because, as he grew older, cynicism won out over romance, Ben conceived a plan to: burn Catherine's family mill; burn Catherine herself; frame her for the arson; buy her family landholdings for a song.

How it all ends up: Catherine escapes the fire and comes back (disguised as a Japanese businessman) looking for vengeance.
3. Straight arrow though he was, Sheriff Harry S. Truman was not too whitebread to carry on a secretive romance with Josie Packard who hailed originally from where?

Answer: Hong Kong

Josie left Hong Kong and came to Twin Peaks in the company of Andrew Packard, who met her in the depths of the underworld. Poor Sheriff Truman - though he was not, despite the occasional moment of bewilderment, a stupid man, he was certainly much too innocent to handle Josie.

How it all ends up: Josie's past catches up with her; the Sheriff, bewildered, descends temporarily into drunken misery.
4. Norma Jennings was married to a violent criminal, doing time in prison. She also had a brave boyfriend called Ed Hurley (who was also, incidentally, married). How did Norma and Ed first become an item?

Answer: They were high-school sweethearts.

Yes, Ed and Norma were another fairytale high-school couple until the day Norma turned to the dark side and took off for a torrid, though ultimately platonic, escapade with future murderer-for-hire Hank Jennings. Ed, in drunken misery, proceeded to marry future nutjob Nadine.

How it all ends up: Hank, discovering the affair, attacks Ed under cover of darkness. But before he can beat the rangy mechanic like an eggsucking dog, he is himself whipped to a pulp by the nutjob Nadine.
5. Eileen Hayward was morally upright (and wheelchair-bound) but nevertheless had a fling in her younger days. Who was her paramour?

Answer: Ben Horne

Compared to some of the high-school kids of Twin Peaks, Donna Hayward could feel lucky in her parents. Her mom, Eileen, gave advice and moral guidance, her dad, Dr. Will Hayward, was a pillar of the township. But in the end Donna discovered that her mom had long ago been seduced by the reptilian Horne - and on a related note, that her dad wasn't her dad!

How it all ends up: Ben Horne, after going through a psychological crisis, emerges a better man and wants to make amends. Enraged at the disruption this causes to his happy family, Dr. Hayward goes from pillar to killer, splitting Horne's skull on a handy fireplace.
6. Lucy Moran, during a hiatus in her relationship with her boyfriend, Deputy Andy, had a brief encounter with sophisticate Dick Tremayne. When Dick learns that Lucy is pregnant, he decides to do the right thing. What does he do?

Answer: He offers to pay for an abortion.

Dick did indeed offer Lucy a discount, but this was before he learned that she was expecting. Later, obviously realizing that a mere discount at the store wasn't going to cut it, he decided to make an even greater financial sacrifice, scraping together enough money to "get rid of...the little...problem..."

How it all ends up: Lucy returns to Andy - here's hoping that any children they have will be a little more on the ball than either of them.
7. James Hurley fell hard for just about every girl who crossed his path. Which of the following people did James not get the hots for?

Answer: Audrey Horne

James and Audrey were classmates, nothing more. Laura Palmer, however, was "the one". Soon after "the one" died, James rendezvoused in the darkened woods with her best friend, Donna Hayward. After a brief discussion of how much they missed "the one", James and Donna fell to kissing.

Later, Laura's cousin Maddy arrived in town and James swiftly began to develop feelings for her, too. One of my favorite scenes: Donna, picking up on the sexual tension between James and Maddy, runs sobbing into the darkness. James, rushing after her, screams "why?" Why? Because you're a complete tomcat, James.

How it all ends up: feeling conflicted, James leaves Donna in Twin Peaks and hits the road on his bike. Because that's what conflicted bikers do.
8. Leland Palmer was unfaithful to his wife Sarah, but his romantic entanglements were, sadly, not all that romantic. Which of the following people was the only one to survive her encounter with Leland/Bob?

Answer: Ronette Pulaski

Since he was a child, Leland was periodically possessed by the evil spirit enigmatically known as "Bob". Leland and Bob were a deadly team - Teresa Banks was the first of their victims, as shown in the prequel "Fire Walk With Me". Laura Palmer, Leland's own daughter, and Maddy, his niece, were equally unfortunate. Ronette Pulaski, however, attacked at the same time as Laura, managed to escape.

How it all ends up: unhappily.
9. Not Agent Cooper! Yes, even Dale, white knight of the FBI, fell for his partner's wife. Her surname was Earle; what was her Christian name?

Answer: Caroline

Windom Earle, Cooper's brilliant partner, turned to the dark side and embraced black magic and murder. Cooper, still unaware of his mentor's fall from grace, found himself helplessly in love with Caroline, Windom's wife. You don't want to know how it all ends up.

How it all ends up: the madman kills his wife, leaving Cooper with a broken heart.
10. And last, but not least, the doomed girl-next-door herself. Which of the following men was NOT the lover of Laura Palmer?

Answer: Lawrence Jacoby

Tormented by the cruel attentions of "Bob", in possession of the body of her helpless father, Laura tried to lose herself in a fog of drugs and sex. Leo Johnson and Jacques Renault were two of her partners in debauchery. Benjamin Horne, her father's employer, was her customer during the short time that she worked at his brothel, One-Eyed-Jack's. Dr. Jacoby, her psychiatrist, was briefly suspected by Agent Cooper of sleeping with Laura, but in fact his intentions were essentially honorable.

How it all ends up: you know how it ends up. And so did I, long before I actually saw the episode. Living in New Zealand, we finally got to see the show months after the killer had been revealed to US viewers. Did New Zealanders who learned the truth do the right thing and keep their mouths shut? Chance would be a fine thing! I used to go into the lecture theaters at my college and people had graffitied it on the desks: "LAURA PALMER'S FATHER KILLED HER".
