When actor Steven Yeung put on the red baseball cap and windbreaker for his first costume fitting, a costumer said that he looked like Short Round, Indiana Jones' sidekick. The name made its way into the series.

Rick and Daryl come across the Walker while searching for Sophia. Rick distracts it while Daryl takes it down with an arrow to the head. Daryl then slices it open with his hunting knife to make sure it hasn't eaten Sophia.

This is also the first time we see Daryl as an active part of the group, cooperating with others for the general good. This marks the beginning of Daryl's transformation from outsider to valued member of the group.

Answer: Daryl himself was lost in the woods as a child and found his own way home

Although he does find both a small hiding place in a pantry and Sophia's doll, it is not until later episodes. In "Save the Last One" Daryl tells Andrea Sophia is still alive because he himself was once lost in the woods for over a week and found his own way back. He ignores the fact that Sophia was not trained in woodcraft in favor of the conclusion he wants.

We later learn that the horse Daryl has "borrowed" from Hershel is named Nelly, as in "Nervous Nelly".

Daryl's vision of Merle scoffs at the chupacabra story, saying it was the shrooms Daryl had eaten while hunting that caused him to hallucinate the mythical goat sucker.

Merle acted as antagonist, rousing Daryl's anger and allowing him to survive the fall and two Walker attacks. The hallucination is also a kind of therapy for Daryl, allowing him to express his anger at Merle for abandoning him as a child. Daryl begins to separate himself from Merle and his old life, freeing him to become part of the group.

Answer: "You were protecting the group. We're good. But shoot me again? You best pray I'm dead."

While Daryl is confined to bed rest in his tent Andrea brings him a book to read and offers an apology. For the first time since we've seen him, Daryl reacts calmly, even offering what passes for a joke.

Answer: Shane wants to call off the search for Sophia

When the group gathers by the barn to check out Glenn's story that it's full of Walkers, Shane wants to leave immediately. Carol protests that Sophia is still missing and Shane says-for the first time publicly-that she's dead and that there's no sense risking everyone's lives in the search. Daryl takes offense, words are exchanged, and the two start towards each other. The group pulls them apart and calms them down before a punch can be thrown.

Actor Norman Reedus has said that Daryl's obsession with finding Sophia has to do with dealing with his past. Daryl thinks that if he can rescue Sophia, an abused child like he was, he can rescue part of himself.

Answer: Separates himself from the group

Daryl shuts down after Sophia's death, moving farther into the woods away from the group. When Lori seeks him out to ask him to go into town to bring back Hershel he snaps, telling her he's finished looking for people.

Answer: He knew that Shane killed Otis

Dale tries to convince Daryl to vote for sparing Randall by attacking Shane's character and motives. He tries to shock Daryl by revealing that Shane killed Otis, but before he can Daryl reveals that he's known all along. Daryl reckons that the only reason Rick didn't know is that he didn't want to face to truth about his best friend.

Answer: He doubts that Randall could have overpowered Shane

Daryl is the only one suspicious of Shane's story from the beginning, reasoning that Randall could not have overpowered the ex-cop. His suspicions are confirmed when he uses his tracking skills to figure out that Shane and Randall had walked together the whole way rather than Randall escaping while Shane lay unconscious.

When Randall turns up as a Walker Daryl discovers that his neck had been broken and, strangely, there are no Walker bites on the body.
