Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many episodes of 'U.F.O.' were there overall?

Answer: 26

Only two series were ever made, due to the fact that TV programmers were unsure of how to pigeonhole it - some episodes had decidedly adult content, whereas the whole idea made it more of a children's adventure (and, of course, Gerry Anderson had already been responsible for 'Thunderbirds'!)
2. Which episode featured Ed Bishop with his real-life dark hair instead of the Ed Straker blond wig shown in every other episode?

Answer: 'Confetti Check A - OK'

This one concentrated on his unsuccessful marriage, and the fact that he had dark hair reflected his early career as a U.S.A.F. colonel.
3. 'U.F.O.' had a dark side which meant that not every episode had a happy ending. Why did Straker's son die in 'A Question of Priorities'?

Answer: He was run over by a car

Straker attempted to get the drugs he needed to save him, but the transporter carrying them was diverted to deal with a UFO. Straker arrived at the hospital with them, but his son John had already died.
4. All the staff had second jobs to maintain their secrecy at S.H.A.D.O. What was Straker's cover job?

Answer: Film producer

The location of his business was Harlington / Straker Film Studios, which covered an underground headquarters.
5. Michael Billington played Colonel Paul Foster. In which 'James Bond' film did he make a brief appearance?

Answer: "The Spy Who Loved Me"

He was an agent who got killed very early on in the film. Michael passed away in 2005. He had cancer.
6. Who took control of Moonbase in 'The Responsibility Seat'?

Answer: Colonel Alec Freeman

This was the episode that had to be shown late at night due to Straker's romantic involvement with a journalist (which seems very tame now, but was too much for Saturday morning kid's TV in the 1970s!)
7. In which episode was the S.H.A.D.O. headquarters destroyed?

Answer: It never was

In each of the mentioned episodes, it came under some kind of threat, the closest being the woman who nearly blew it up in 'Psycho Bombs'. However, it survived for the next series that never came.
8. In which year was 'U.F.O.' set?

Answer: 1980

It attempted to 'predict' several fictional events that were supposed to have occurred. For example, Straker mentioned an earthquake in Turkey that killed thousands (which really happened) and racism being stamped out (which sadly hasn't happened yet).
9. This series was one of Gerry Anderson's attempts to combine model work with live actors. What programme later attempted to repeat the same format, and was supposed to be 'U.F.O.'s replacement?

Answer: Space 1999

Martin Landau starred in what I thought was a rather lame Gerry Anderson effort that lacked the atmosphere of the original.
10. Which British TV channel carried repeats of 'U.F.O.' late in the 1990s?

Answer: BBC 2

In a curious reversal of fortunes, the BBC picked up on this series in 1997-8, and screened them all in a strange order with several cuts, due to the fact that it was shown at 6 p.m. in the evening! It has also been shown in Italy, Australia and Japan.
