Who is Guest Starring With the Bundys Quiz

"Married with Children" was one of the funniest shows in television history. Many times they had surprising guest stars. Some seemed to come on just to make fun of themselves. And some... I don't know why they were there.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kelly Bundy went to an acting school that was named for an actor best known for the classic sitcom "F Troop." What was the name of Kelly's school?

Answer: Larry Storch School of Acting

Mr. Storch appeared in one episode, "Something Larry This Way Comes," playing himself. In this episode, Kelly gets a chance to perform "Phantom of the Opera" with Larry but he gets knocked out before the performance can begin. You know it doesn't end well for Al.

A veteran actor, comedian, and impersonator of over 60 years, Larry Storch never seemed to receive the recognition he deserved. He started out in Vaudeville and on radio. The only break in his career came when he was a submarine crewman during World War II. Although he did hundreds of movies, tv appearances, cartoons, and live shows; he claimed the most money he ever made was for a McDonald's commercial.

"Even when I would come out under feathers, you'd hear people yelling from the balcony, 'Aaaaa-garn, where's F Troop?' It's embarrassing, but it's flattering."
2. In an episode called "Rock of Ages," the Bundys find themselves in the airport VIP lounge with a bunch of aging rock stars from the 60's and 70's. How does Al refer to them?

Answer: "The geezers of rock"

The Super group for Old Aid included, John Sebastian (singer/guitarist, The Lovin' Spoonful), Peter Noone (singer/guitarist, Herman's Hermits), Mark Lindsay (singer, Paul Revere and the Raiders), Spencer Davis (singer, The Spencer Davis Group), Richie Havens (folk singer), Robby Krieger (guitarist, The Doors), and, of course, our hero Al "Axl" Bundy (sandwich, Shoes and Socks). They sang "We Are the Old." That song is sure to go down as a classic.

"We are the old. We have arthritis. Our gums are weak from gingivitis."
3. In the episode entitled "So This Is How Sinatra Felt," Al is pursued by a character played by disgraced church secretary, Jessica Hahn, in her first acting role. What did Al refer to her as?

Answer: The Shoe Groupie

Jessica Hahn was thrust into the public eye when she was a church secretary and an affair she had with married televangelist Jim Baker came to light. The resulting scandal led to the downfall of Baker's PTL empire, including the Christian-themed amusement park, Heritage USA. The stink that was raised made people lose trust in TV preachers. Within a few years, most were off the air. Seems to be quite wide reaching for a romp in the hay.

Hahn tried to segue her fame into an acting career. Unfortunately, that's a move that never really took off. In this "Married With Children" episode she plays a woman who throws herself at Al. In the end her charms are, reluctantly ignored and Al sticks with Peg. I doubt even he knows why.

"Scandal fame is short-term."
4. Al has it out with an old football rival from another high school in "All-nite Security Dude." Football great Bubba Smith played a man named Dixon with what nickname?

Answer: Spare Tire

The late Bubba Smith played for three NFL teams, Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders, and Houston Oilers. He went to two Super Bowls and a Pro Bowl. After his retirement from the NFL, he went into acting and enjoyed moderate success.

In this episode, he argued with Al over who had the most miserable life. Al, of course, won that one.

"Well, I'm not a violent person. You have to back off. People sometimes will try you and try you until you try not to, but you have to react. Normally, I just walk away."
5. Professional wrestler King Kong Bundy appeared in two episodes. Once as Uncle Irwin in "All in the Family." Who did he play in "Flight of the Bumblebee?"

Answer: Himself

King Kong Bundy was born Christopher Alan Pallies, in Atlantic City, NJ on November 7th, 1957. He was a staple of the wrestling circuit for 25 years. Standing 6' 4" and weighing over 450 pounds, he has been described as "a walking condominium" by Gorilla Monsoon. The original "Married with Children " writers must have been fans, because they named the Bundys after him. Since retiring from wrestling, he has dabbled in acting and stand up comedy.

In this episode, Bud wants to join NoMa'am and the selection committee demands that he go into the ring with King Kong Bundy. It doesn't go well for Bud this time.

"If you're good."
6. In the episode "No Ma'am" they hired a talk show host to play a talk show host. Jerry Springer played a tv personality named Jerry Springer. The character is also called what?

Answer: The Masculine Feminist

Gerald Norman Springer was born into tragic circumstances. His parents were Jewish refugees from Nazi controlled Eastern Europe. He lost several family members to the Holocaust. Jerry was born in a bomb shelter under London.

In this show he plays a talk show host who's championing of women's issues makes him the target of Al and his friends.

"Take care of yourselves, and each other."
7. In "It's a Bundyful Life," manic comedian, Sam Kinison, played whose guardian angel?

Answer: Al

What a talent we lost when Kinison died in that car crash in 1992! Sam originally followed in his father's footsteps and became a Pentacostal minister, leading hellfire tent revivals around the south. He eventually became disillusioned with religion. He took the skills he gained in those meetings and channeled them into a successful comedy career. Between his screaming and antics he managed to make many social and political statements. The part of Al Bundy was modeled on Kinison during development.

The story he stars in is a parody of the classic, Jimmy Stewart, Christmas movie "It's a Wonderful Life." Sam plays an angel sent to show Al how bad everything would be if Al had never been born, only to discover that everyone was better off.

"I don't worry about terrorism. I was married for two years."
8. Country music legend, Waylon Jennings, appeared as Ironhead Haynes in an episode entitled, "The Legend of Ironhead Haynes." He sang a song in answer to Al's questions about how to battle political correctness. What, in their entirety, are the lyrics to that song?

Answer: Nothing

Waylon's most famous TV role was as the hands at the beginning of the "Dukes of Hazzard" credits. He also did narration for that show. More famous as a singer than an actor, he was a major influence on hoards of acts that followed him. He was a major founder of the "outlaw" movement in country music.

On February 2nd, 1959 Jennings was set to fly from Clear Lake, Iowa to his next gig in Moorehead, Minnesota. He decided to give up his seat to The Big Bopper. When Buddy Holly, who was taking the plane, heard that Jennings had volunteered to take the bus, the two friends teased each other. Holly taunted, "I hope your old bus breaks down!" Waylon shot back, "I hope your old plane crashes!" Not long after his plane did crash, in a tragedy that became known as "The day the music died." There were no survivors. Waylon was haunted by his offhand remark for years.

"Honesty is something you can't wear out."
9. Traci Lords is a former adult film performer who moved into mainstream acting. She appeared in two episodes of "Married With Children." In "Tooth or Consequences" she played a dental assistant. What was she in "Al Bundy, Shoe Dick?"

Answer: Heiress

Traci caused quite a controversy when it was discovered that she had been making adult movies while still being underage. Since moving into more mainstream filmmaking she has done quite well for herself. She has worked steadily in tv and movies since the 1980's. She's also recorded several albums and dabbled in directing. Unfortunately, many people stereotype her as nothing more than a former adult movies star.

In this episode, Al dreams that he is a PI in an old-fashioned potboiler. Ms Lords plays the woman who hires him. Of course he wakes up and he's just a shoeman again.

"I'm successful in spite of my past, not because of it!"
10. Richard "Cheech" Marin, of Cheech and Chong fame, took over as the voice of one of the regular characters for a few shows. Which character did he play?

Answer: Buck

Richard Anthony "Cheech" Marin first gained fame with his partner Thomas B. Kin Chong as a top-selling, Grammy winning, comedy duo. He was given the nickname Cheech as a newborn when an uncle thought he looked like a fried pork skin; chiarron in Spanish. Besides being a performer Cheech is an avid art collector. He owns one of the largest collections of Chicano art in the world.

His character, Buck the dog is my favorite one in the show. Buck is probably the only character more miserable than Al.

"Chicanos and running water are endlessly fascinating. I can watch them all day."
