Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The White Shadow" was a show about a former NBA basketball player who takes a job as a basketball coach at an urban high school. What was the coach's name?

Answer: Ken Reeves

Ken Howard was the star of this show, which premiered in 1978. It was the first "ensemble" show with a predominantly African-American cast. The show's title came from Reeve's promise to stand behind his team like a "white shadow".
2. We first met Freddie Prinze in the 1974 sitcom "Chico and the Man." Chico comes looking for a job, and the cranky old garage owner (played by Jack Albertson) doesn't trust him, but in time they form a relationship which charmed the fans of this series. What was "The Man"'s name?

Answer: Ed Brown

Freddie Prinze was discovered by producer James Komack when he appeared on the Tonight Show in 1973. The show diminished in popularity after the death of Freddie Prinze, though two new costars were brought in to try to boost ratings.
3. One of my favorite shows was "My Mother the Car." In this 1965 show, a lawyer (played by Jerry Van Dyke) buys a 1928 Porter which "talks to him" in the voice of his deceased mother. The mom was voiced by Ann Sothern. What was "Mother"'s name?

Answer: Gladys Crabtree

I really enjoyed this show. My favorite character was the sinister Manzini, who was played by Avery Schreiber. Although this show has been panned by critics (especially those who unfavorably compare star Jerry Van Dyke to his brother Dick) I found it charming and fun.
4. "The Equalizer" was a series where a former secret agent tried to right past wrongs by offering his services as a "troubleshooter." Edward Woodward was the star, and the series featured many guest stars. What was the "Equalizer"'s real name?

Answer: Robert McCall

One of the interesting relationships on the show was between McCall and his estranged son, Scott. Scott despised his father's world, at first, but was slowly drawn into it. McCall also found out that his former love, Manon, had borne him a daughter. During the course of the show, Edward Woodward had a heart attack, and Robert Mitchum substituted for him in the title role.

Another cast member, named Harley Gage (Richard Jordan) , was brought in to ease the load for Woodward.
5. One of the many TV series about spies was called "The Saint." The show starred Roger Moore. What was the "Saint"'s name?

Answer: Simon Templar

This show began as a straightforward mystery series, but as time went on it began to include many secret agent-related themes. Many TV pundits have said that this role helped prepare Moore for his famous turn as James Bond. The show ran from 1962 - 1969.
6. One very entertaining police drama featured Angie Dickinson as the glamorous "Police Woman". The show was about an undercover detective in Los Angeles. What was the name of the title character?

Answer: "Pepper" Anderson

In many of the episodes, Dickinson wore various costumes due to her "undercover" roles. This not only made her very popular, it boosted female applications to police academies around the country. Her role on the series sparked many debates about whether her portrayal of the role was too sexualized.

This show was the inspiration for future female police shows, such as "Charlie's Angels" and "Cagney and Lacey".
7. One classic family show was called "Father Knows Best", and starred popular actor Robert Young as the dad who knew best. What was this dad's name?

Answer: Jim Anderson

The show first aired on the radio in 1949, and began its television run in 1954. It ran until 1960. Robert Young was the only member of the radio cast to be in the TV show. It is considered by many to be a overly-optimistic view of family life.
8. In "The Courtship of Eddie's Father", Bill Bixby stars as a single dad whose son wants him to remarry. The son often came up with many ways to try to get dad to remarry. What is Eddie's father's name?

Answer: Tom Corbett

This show was entertaining and quite popular. I enjoyed the portrayal of housekeeper Mrs. Livingston, by Myoshi Umecki. James Komack, who would go on to find fame as a producer, played the role of Norman on this show.
9. Taking one of her popular characters from the Carol Burnett show, Vicki Lawrence gained a following on the very funny "Mama's Family." What was "Mama's" name?

Answer: Thelma Harper

"Mama" was a hoot, and her sharp-tongued comments were the highlight of the show. But I enjoyed the character of Naomi, as portrayed by Dorothy Lyman.
10. Another favorite show was about a handsome single dad, played by Tony Danza, who becomes a housekeeper for a busy businesswoman. The show is called "Who's the Boss?" and also starred Judith Light. What was the name of "the Boss"?

Answer: Angela Bower

Although I enjoyed the interaction between Tony and Angela, I loved Angela's mom, Mona. I thought they really spoiled the show toward the end, when Tony and Angela fell in love; they made a very unlikely couple, in my opinion.
