Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were Sara and Evan Shipley trying to do when they were attacked?

Answer: tip over the washing machine

It seemed Sara, a marine biologist, might have realized that water could kill the organism and save her husband. She and her son were trying to get water. When none came out of the tap, she determined to pull the washing machine out of the wall to access water through that pipe. Unfortunately, before they could succeed, they were both attacked by the organism and killed.
2. What was Deputy Greer distracted by that allowed Mulder to grab his gun?

Answer: cat

Greer had found Scully and Mulder trying to pull the boards off the door to the Shipleys' bathroom, and didn't believe they were FBI agents. He had them at gunpoint and was reading them their rights, intending to arrest them. Scully was trying to reason with him, but he argued, "You could be looters. For all I know, you could be part of the Manson family." Just then, the wet cat ran through the house and out a window. Greer was surprised and looked away, giving Mulder just enough opportunity to reach out and grab Greer's gun away from him. Greer raised his hands, fretting, "Oh, no. You're going to kill me." Mulder replied in annoyance, "No, I'm not, but I'd like to" and Scully showed him her FBI badge.
3. What did Deputy Greer pull out of the floor drain at the Shipleys' house?

Answer: shirt

He saw slimy water bubbling out of the drain, so knelt to investigate more closely. After prying of the drain cover, he reached inside and pulled out Evan's football jersey.
4. What did Mulder pull out of the toilet at the manager's apartment?

Answer: watch

Scully was busy tending to Deputy Greer, who was struggling for breath on the floor. Mulder looked in the toilet, surrounded with slime. He reached in and pulled out a man's watch, quipping, "I've heard of passing the time... Ouch."
5. What did Mulder find the looter trying to take?

Answer: television

Mulder found him backing out of an apartment with a television. The looter tried to pass it off as though the TV was his, but when Walter Suarez came into the hall, he confirmed that the looter was not a resident. The looter was later seen stealing a watch and Deputy Greer's ring.

Unfortunately, this sort of behavior isn't all that uncommon in sites of natural disasters; looters see it as an easy way to get what they want and everyone else is too busy to stop them.
6. What did Mulder say after his first encounter with George Vincent?

Answer: "All the nuts roll down to Florida."

Mulder was trying to get him to open his door so that Mulder could warn him about the danger, but Vincent would have none of it. In a final show of bravado, Vincent spat, "What [...] are you talking about? Hmm? It don't matter. I'm armed against it.

The Junta, Cuba and Castro. I'm not going to cede my home to no revolutionaries without a fight. You got anything else you want to throw at me, you bring it on." To the closed door, Mulder muttered to himself, "All the nuts roll down to Florida." He and Scully had already heard this same thing twice that night from local law enforcement who didn't believe they were FBI, so it was hilarious to see Mulder turning it around!
7. What did the looter accidentally knock into the bathtub with Deputy Greer?

Answer: Epsom salts

There was a box of Epsom salts on the edge of the tub, and when he knocked them in, the freshwater bath became a saltwater one, encouraging the life of the organism. By the time Angela was using the room to relieve her bladder, the tentacles had fully regrown, and when Mulder went in to investigate after Angela's hysterics, Greer had completely disappeared.
8. Was Mulder attacked?

Answer: yes

Mulder went into the hallway to look for the looter, but a tentacle broke through the ceiling lamp and attacked him. When he stumbled back to the others, Vincent pushed the door shut, locking Mulder into the hall alone. As the others dealt with the birth, Mulder struggled to the end of the hallway where he saw the Shipleys' cat.

He realized that it had survived because it had been in fresh water, while the organism could only exist in salt water.
9. Who acted as obstetrician during Angela Villareal's birth?

Answer: Scully

Forced by Vincent to deliver the baby, Scully growled, "The truth is I've never delivered a baby before. So stand back or make yourself useful but stay out of my way." Walter helped coach his baby's mother through the birth and Vincent kept guard. As Scully prepared to pull the baby out, she realized that the water was the key to the life and death of the organism. Just then, one of the tentacles broke through the light fixture and attacked Vincent. Ever collected, Scully finished delivering the baby, then directed Walter to pick up Vincent's gun and shoot the sprinkler system, setting off the fresh water that would kill the organism.
10. What killed the organism?

Answer: fresh water

After the storm had passed, Scully and Mulder argued over who had really figured it out. Mulder insisted he figured it out when he saw the Shipleys' cat, but Scully thought that she'd pointed out the answer by triggering the sprinkler system. Mulder was forced to concede when Dales took over the conversation and sided with Scully, saying "If Agent Scully had not been there with you I shudder to think what would have happened to you."
