To ensure that they would get pregnant, the Empress ordered them to house arrest. She had Maria Choglokov and her husband babysit them with their bedchamber doors locked.

It was Maria Choglokov, but according to Sir Charles the idea had to have come from the Empress. He then suggested she take a lover. It wasn't her marriage at stake that drove her to it but her very life was at stake. She later gave birth to Grand Duke Paul, whom the Empress took complete charge of.

Vorontzov ordered them in the name of the Emperor to fire. Catherine told her men to hold their fire and galloped forward a bit. Catherine: "Any man who wants to shoot his Empress. Now is the time!" Vorontzov's men laid down their weapons and joined Catherine's side.
