Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The game pieces in "Bejeweled 2 Deluxe" are differently colored and shaped gems. Which of the following is *not* a gem in the game?

Answer: Turquoise pentagon

There are no turquoise pieces in "Bejeweled 2 Deluxe". The main pieces, listed in no particular order, are:

Red quadrilateral
Green octagon
White dodecahedron
Blue diamond
Purple triangle
Yellow rhombus
Orange icosahedrons

Beyond the introductory levels of the game, additional pieces appear. Those listed here, though, are the most basic.
2. What is the main objective of "Bejeweled 2 Deluxe"?

Answer: To match three gems of a kind in a row horizontally or vertically

The fundamental goal of the game is to match three gems of the same color either horizontally or vertically. You do this by moving each gem with the pointer, swapping it with its neighbor. When you make the match, those gems disappear, point totals briefly appear and more random gems fall from the top to refill the game board. Matching four or five is also possible, each with its own result, but three in a row is the basic minimum.

There are characteristic sound effects as well, and the game's voice offers praise for particularly good moves, such as when a chain reaction or 'cascade' occurs.
3. Besides the basic gems, "Bejeweled 2 Deluxe" includes other game pieces that appear after the first few levels of play, Power Gems and Hyper Cubes, both of whose effects are destructive. How are they different?

Answer: Power Gems explode while Hyper Cubes zap with lightning.

Though their means are different, both Power Gems and Hyper Cubes destroy other gems upon being swapped. When swapped into a match configuration, a Power Gem blows up a contained area of three by three squares. When swapped with any gem, the Hyper Cube sends out lightning all around the game board. Both these actions produce very satisfying sound effects.
4. It is possible to match a Power Gem with ordinary gems of the same color. Is it possible to form a match containing more than one Power Gem?

Answer: Yes

It is possible to match multiple Power Gems. The more Power Gems in the match (up to three), the bigger the explosion.
5. "Bejeweled 2 Deluxe" has four playing modes. Which of the following is *not* one of them?

Answer: Timed

The four modes are Classic, Action, Endless and Puzzle. The Action mode is timed, while the Classic, Endless and Puzzle modes are not.
6. What happens if you match four gems of a kind?

Answer: Formation of a Power Gem with a minor explosion

Rather than simply being cleared and replaced by new random gems, as with a three-in-a-row match, four matched gems explode with a sound similar to the tinkle of breaking glass to form one power gem. When placed in its own match configuration, the power gem will then explode more spectacularly.

When it is transformed into a Power Gem, a gem keeps its color, shape and size while beginning to scintillate like a star.
7. A Hyper Cube is formed when you align five gems of a kind.

Answer: True

A Hyper Cube, which looks like a cube of fire, is created when five gems of a kind align horizontally or vertically. The formation is accompanied by a fire bell sound effect.
8. What happens when you swap a gem or a Power Gem with a Hyper Cube?

Answer: The Hyper Cube destroys itself, the swapped gem and all gems of that color.

The Hyper Cube's lightning destroys gems of the same color as the one it was swapped with. For instance, if you swap a green octagon with a Hyper Cube, the Hyper Cube will shoot out green lightning and zap green octagons around the game board. This property can be of great strategic value in Puzzle mode.
9. The hint function is available in Puzzle mode and the three game modes. Are the undo and pause functions available in all four modes as well?

Answer: No

'Hint' can be accessed in all modes. By contrast, 'Undo' is only available in Puzzle mode, while 'Pause" only appears in Action mode.
10. In all four modes you move automatically to the next level or world when the current one is complete.

Answer: False

In the three game modes, you do move automatically to the next level. The game voice announces, "Level complete." The world of the current level dissolves and the new world forms as the voice announces," Get ready!" and the new level number is briefly displayed.

In Puzzle mode, you press the Warp Drive button to move to the next world. The shift is not automatic.
11. How do you solve puzzles in Puzzle mode?

Answer: By clearing the game board

Unlike in the game modes, the goal of Puzzle mode is to clear all pieces from the game board. In a number of puzzles there is only one way to do so.
12. How many worlds are there in Puzzle mode and how many puzzles make up each world?

Answer: Sixteen worlds with five puzzles in each

You may visit a world's puzzles in any order, replaying ones you have already solved. But only when you have solved four out of the five may you, if you wish, proceed to the next world.

Each world or planet has its own name and a distinct look/feel thanks to the game's artwork. They also specialize, with different types of puzzles appearing on each.

The planets are as follows:

Centuari Prime: This world focuses on double matching and basic matches
Tau Heximus: This world focuses on Power Gems.
Ceti Alpha V: This world focuses on Hyper Cubes
Seraph III: This world introduces and focuses on rocks.
Verithrax II: This world focuses on moving gems in empty spaces.
Maya III: This world only contains White Gems and Rocks in checker style.
Hegemon V: This world introduces and focuses on Bomb Gems.
Tororoid X: This world only contains Red and White Gems in checker style.
Channon Doa: This world focuses on patterns as well as moving gems on empty spaces.
Gamma Core: This world only has Red, Orange, Yellow, and White Gems in arrow formations.
Viceroy VII: This world focuses on Power Gems again.
Sequentus Beta: This world focuses on good timing on Bombs.
Lexicon Delta: This world contains gems in checker forms as well as gems in 6x6 formations.
Gaean Reach: This world focuses on checker style again, only contains Red, Blue, and White gems.
Virago Ceti: This world focuses again on patterns.
Dorsal Miner: This world revisits patterns.
13. How do you move to the next puzzle world when the current one is complete?

Answer: Press the Warp Drive button.

Once four puzzles have been successfully solved, the warp drive button becomes functional. You can press it after solving four or all five puzzles to proceed, but you must press it. Advancement to the next world is not automatic. There is no "New World" link. Clicking the ornamental buttons in the corners of the puzzle frame has no effect.
14. It is necessary to solve all puzzles in a world before proceeding to the next.

Answer: False

When you complete the fourth of the five puzzles in the current world, the game's voice announces, "Warp Drive Ready!" At this point, you can press the Warp Drive button and move to the next world. This ability is particularly handy if you encounter a puzzle you can't solve.
15. Except for the obvious structural difference, that is the difference between how you solve a puzzle versus how you play the games, are all other elements of play the same in Puzzle mode and the game modes?

Answer: No

There are several differences between Puzzle mode and the game modes. For instance, in some worlds of Puzzle mode, empty spaces are important, while in others, additional game pieces, rocks and bombs, appear.
