An Eclectic Mix -- "Final Fantasy XII" Quiz

"Final Fantasy XII" (PS2) is as full of interesting items, sidequests, and yes, even glitches, as any of the other entries in this storied franchise. The obvious, the little-known, the traditional, and the new are all fair game.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is it possible to obtain the Zodiac Spear before leaving the Dalmascan region for the first time to head for Jahara?

Answer: Yes

By now, most everyone knows what chests they must avoid to get the Zodiac Spear later in the game. As with all powerful weapons (the strongest in the game, in fact) the spear is normally not available until late in the game. However, with a moderately leveled party the spear can be obtained at an early juncture.

The game must be completed up until the Tomb of Raithwall and the "Cactuar Family" sidequest must be done. Essentially, the player will run through the Mosphoran Highwaste and Salikawood (areas that are normally accessed much later) until they reach the entrance to the Necrohol of Nabudis in the Salikawood (the optional boss Bomb King must be fought along the way). Upon entering the Necrohol, flee until the room with the spear is reached (The Cloister of the Highborn), grab it, and run back out.
2. If the party returns to the Pharos at Ridorana after completing the story events there, they will find that the Dais of Ascendance allows them to access a new section: the Pharos Subterra. The Subterra has four levels, what are their names?

Answer: Penumbra, Umbra, Abyssal, Unknown

The four subterra levels are filled with difficult enemies, darkness, and the absence of the mini-map. The first three levels are structured in the same way: a central ring with clusters of rooms at the NW, NE, SW, and SE areas. In each of these clusters there is an altar on which a certain number of black orbs must be placed. These orbs are received from enemies after defeating them. Only after all four of the altars in one level have been satisfied will the next level become available. All three upper levels must be completed in order to access the fourth level which contains the Shadowseer mark.

The other choices were made up except for Udii, Avaa, Praa, and Pratii. These are names used in the Great Crystal-Giruvegan to denote direction. Udii is north, Avaa is south, Praa is east, and Pratii is west.
3. Where else (besides the Sochen Cave Palace) can you encounter the Mandragoras: Onion Queen, Alruane King, Pumpkin Star, Mandragora Prince, and Topstalk?

Answer: The Feywood - Icefield of Clearsight

The Mandragoras are fought in the "Hall of Lambent Darkness" in the Sochen Cave Palace and they seem like bosses. However, in the Bestiary they don't appear under the bosses section and they have a total that you need to kill in order to complete their entries in the Bestiary. To encounter them again, kill all of the enemies in "Icefield of Clearsight" in the Feywood (just kill anything that you see), leave the area and come back.

They are one of the few enemies that can boost themselves to level 99 using Mystery Waltz and they can be chained to acquire rare loot.
4. What type of area effect does the Esper Ultima put on the battlefield when you fight it?

Answer: All of these

Ultima, once you've whittled down its HP a little, will start cycling through various area effects of previous Espers (plus some new ones). The effects are as follows: HP drain, MP drain, Attack seal, Magick seal, Technicks seal, Items seal, and Magnetic field (inflicts slow on characters with metallic armor).

After the last effect is reached, they will cycle over again from the beginning. The five story-related Espers do not have field effects associated with them. Cuchulainn has HP drain, Zeromus has Magick seal, Exodus has Items seal, and Chaos has Attack seal. Zalera has a five-minute timer that will eject the party from the battle upon expiration requiring the fight to be started from scratch.

The Magnetic field is also used previously, but not by another Esper.

The boss Vinuskar in the Stilshrine of Miriam has this effect on during the battle.
5. It is possible to battle other level 99 enemies besides the Lv. 99 Red Chocobo?

Answer: Yes

The Lv. 99 Red Chocobo can be encountered on the Ozmone Plain after chaining normal chocobos. Even then there is only a 1 in 256 chance that it will appear. It will drop Ribbons. This is the only enemy that naturally appears at level 99. Enemies that can use technicks like Cannabalize (Wild Saurian) and Mystery Waltz (the Mandragoras) can boost themselves to level 99. Enemies at this level are extremely powerful so caution must be taken when attempting to fight them.
6. The three main sections of the The Great Crystal are named after the outer, middle, and innermost sections of a plant so as to indicate increasing distance from the center. What do the names Phullum, Jilaam, and Pis correspond to?

Answer: Phloem, xylem, pith

Xylem and phloem are involved in water and glucose transport, respectively. They, in turn, supply all parts of the plant, including the pith. The pith is a soft, spongy layer in the center of the stem. It is surrounded by a layer of xylem and then a layer of phloem. The other plant parts mentioned were not indicative of the exterior, interior, and central parts (the cambium layer is generally found between the phloem and the xylem).

In addition to these names, there are other sets of words used in the Great Crystal to indicate location and also whether the area named has a teleport crystal or a gate switch. Within Phullam, Jilaam, and Pis are various sublayers that correspond to geologic ages: Kanbhru is Cambrian, Oldobi is Ordovician, Sirhru is Silurian, Dhebon is Devonian, Kabonii is Carboniferous, Bhrum is Permian, Trahk is Triassic, and Jula is Jurassic. The more recent the age the closer it is to the core. If the area has a teleport crystal the name will include the word "Vikaari" to indicate a shift and either "A" for up or "Dha" for down. The presence of "Sthaana" or Set in the name represents an area with a gate switch.

Udii, Avaa, Praa, and Pratii correspond to compass directions.
7. The elementals return in "Final Fantasy XII" but with a lower (elemental) and a higher (entite) level monster for each element. Some, like the Salamand and Undin Entite are easy enough, but what element does the Leamonde Entite represent?

Answer: Dark

The Leamonde entite is the powered up version of the Dark elemental. For those that have played the SquareEnix game "Vagrant Story", the name should be familiar. Lea Monde was the city that was the primary setting of the entire game; a city that was steeped in the mysterious power known as the Dark.

Leamonde entites can be found in the Nabreus Deadlands. The Salamand entite (Yensan Sandsea) is fire, Undin (Pharos) is water, Diakon (Giruvegan) is holy, Sylphi (Ozmone Plain) is wind, Mardu (Giza Plain) is lightning, Gnoma (Dalmasca Sands) is earth, and Leshach (Paramina Rift) is ice. These names are also used in "Vagrant Story" to denote the different elements.
8. What is the one element for which the party gains no Black Magick spells?

Answer: Earth

Ironically, although many enemies are weak to the earth element, the characters never acquire an earth-based black magick spell. Holy and Aero (as well as Aeroga) may both be gotten. Water can only be used in its lowest form (i.e. no Watera or Waterga) despite this element also being a common weakness.

The only way to attack with this element is to use weapons and ammunition that have it as an added effect. These include: Cypress Pole, Gaia Rod, Artemis Arrows, and Mud Shot.
9. The Ensanguined Shield has the highest evasion out of all of the other shields. In order to achieve this effect the bearer must pay a price. What three status effects does the shield bestow upon the wearer?

Answer: Sap, slow, poison

This shield can be found as a treasure in the Henne Mines (Special Charter Shaft), the Feywood (Edge of Reason), and Balfonheim (Port Villa). The sap and slow effects can be negated with regen and haste but the poison cannot be removed. Also, equipping accessories (Ribbon, Quasimodo Boots, Sash, and Tourmaline Ring) does not negate the effects.
10. What are all of the guns named after?

Answer: Stars

Altair (Alpha Aquilae) in Aquarius, Capella (Alpha Aurigae) in Auriga, Vega (Alpha Lyrae; 5th brightest star in sky) in Lyra, Sirius (Alpha Canis Majoris; brightest star in sky) in Canis Major, Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis; 9th brightest) in Orion, Ras Algethi (Alpha Herculis) in Hercules, Aldebaran (Alpha Taurae) in Taurus, Spica (Alpha Virginis) in Virgo, Antares (Alpha Scorpii) in Scorpius, Arcturus (Alpha Bootes; 3rd brightest) in Bootes, and Fomalhaut (Alpha Pisces Austrini) in Pisces Austrinus. All of these stars are the brightest in their respective constellations (hence the "Alpha").
11. What does the "petrify glitch" in "Final Fantasy XII" refer to?

Answer: A monster of a different type that is killed by petrify/stone does not break a battle chain

This glitch is an excellent way to collect rare loot from enemies that are difficult to chain. The monster that is killed by the petrify/stone status will not break a pre-existing battle chain and will drop loot of the same level as the chain dictates. Simply chain easier and/or more numerous monsters until a high-level chain (and high-level loot) is acheived then cast Break on the monster that you want a specific item from and let petrify/stone kill it. The chain can be continued and added to by killing more monsters of the same type and the target monsters can be petrified until the desired items are dropped.

As an example: chain Worgens in the Mosphoran Highwaste and petrify the Humbabas to get them to drop rare loot Beastlord Horns (used to make the Sagittarius Bow).
12. The Tournesol is the second strongest weapon in the game after the Zodiac Spear. It can only be created by selling loot to the Bazaar and buying it as goods. The Tournesol goes one step further, however. Not only do the three components have to be sold to the Bazaar, but the components to make the components must be sold as well! What three items (Bazaar names not actual names) must be sold to make the Tournesol?

Answer: Jewel of the Serpent, Matchless Metal, Jewel of Creation

The names correspond to what they're called in the Bazaar and not their actual names. Jewel of the Serpent is Serpentarius (Snake Skin x4, Serpent Eye x2, High Arcana), Matchless Metal is Gemsteel (Scarletite, Damascus Steel x2, Hell-Gate's Flame x2), and Jewel of Creation is Empyreal Soul (Soul Powder, Wargod's Band x2, High Arcana).

The collection process is time-consuming and expensive. Three each of the three ingredients must be purchased from the Bazaar and then sold back to get the Tournesol. Gemsteels and Empyreal Souls cost 29,997 gil apiece and Serpentarius are 19,998 gil each.

After selling these nine items back, the Tournesol appears under the title of "The Sunflower" and costs 600,000 gil. In total, you will spend a stunning 839,976 gil to acquire this weapon.
13. "Final Fantasy XII" features such well-known names as Leviathan, Shiva, Ifrit, and others. In what incarnation are they shown in in this game?

Answer: Airships

Instead of summons, airships and other vehicles bear these names. The Dreadnought Leviathan is commanded by Judge Magister Ghis and is the flagship of the 8th Imperial fleet. Other ships of this fleet include the light cruiser Shiva and the heavy cruiser Ifrit.

The Dreadnought Odin leads the 1st fleet. The flagship of the 12th fleet is the heavy carrier Alexander under the command of Judge Magister Zargabaath. Lastly, the Bahamut is a sky fortress with tremendous power.
14. After joing Clan Centurio, you can go after elite marks, receive rewards for certain achievements, and gain Clan ranks. The highest rank, Order of Ambrosia, is quite difficult to attain. What is not one of the requirements?

Answer: Raise every character's level to 99

The prerequisites for this rank are pretty stiff. Killing all marks also necessitates taking out both Hell Wyrm and Omega Mark VIII as they help trigger the Yiazmat hunt (which is no slouch itself with 50 million HP). Also, acquiring all Sky Pirate Den characters is a chore in itself (requiring you to obtain all 13 Espers in addition to many other difficult tasks).

The easiest by far is amassing the clan points, as they are awarded fairly easily and frequently throughout the game.
15. Lastly, no "Final Fantasy" quiz would be complete without mentioning the Malboro. "Final Fantasy XII" has not one but several Malboro creatures as normal enemies, rare game, and marks. They all also have their trademark "Bad Breath" attack. In addition, they have several other "Breath" attacks. Which of these is the most dangerous?

Answer: Putrid Breath

All of these except Vile Breath are attacks used by the Malboro enemies during the game. Putrid Breath is the most dangerous because it can inflict every negative status effect in the game. Bad Breath and Cloying Breath cause less effects.

The different Malboro types include: Malboro (Golmore Jungle), Malboro Overking (Garamsythe Waterway), Cassie (Ridorana Cataract), Great Malboro (Golmore), Malboro King (Salikawood), Vivian (Giruvegan), Kris (Tchita Uplands- rare game), Wild Malboro (Feywood- Rank VI Mark), and Carrot (Salikawood - Elite mark).
