Colored gems are only found in death routes which are located in certain levels. In the 3rd game colored gems did not only have to be located in these routes. The death route always gives a colored gem no matter what game it is. These routes causes Crash Bandicoot to die easier because of the word death.

These routes will only show an outline if Crash Bandicoot dies before reaching it. The death routes can still become an outline after it has been solid if Crash Bandicoot dies while not in the route before reaching it unlike in the third game.

In Tsunami the character that you play is Coco. Coco will be riding a scooter in this level. There will be waves that will chase you down. Level 12 is in the third warp room.

There will be a sign with a yellow gem on it when doing level 5 in a section where you get to choose which route that you want to use when riding the mine cart. This route will take you to the mine cart tracks that you can see beneath the mine cart tracks of the normal route.
