Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many major powers are there at the start of the game?

Answer: Six

The major powers are: England, Spain, France, Sweden, Portugal and Holland. You play the game as the ruler of one of these six nations, vying for control of more than half of the old world provinces.
2. How many total countries and tribes are there at the start of the game?

Answer: Twenty-two

At the start of the game, there are always six major powers, six minor powers and ten tribes. It is not atypical for a game to conclude with all tribal and minor power provinces under major power control.
3. In what type of terrain would you find diamonds?

Answer: desert

At $400 per unit, diamonds are the most valuable commodity available. A single diamond mine built to level 2 can comfortably fund your research for the first third of the game. Considering that diamonds are only found in deserts, and deserts are only found in the new world, it behooves the player to explore uncharted waters to find the new world.
4. Along with two units of peasant labor, what other two resources are required to manufacture one unit of bronze?

Answer: One tin and one copper

Bronze is the primary resource used in the manufacture of forts, fighting ships and military units prior to the advent of steel. One iron ore and one coal make one steel, two iron ore make one cast iron and there is no lead in the game.
5. How many classes of ships are there?

Answer: Four

The categories are: small merchant, large merchant, small warship and large warship. There are three generations of each class of ship, and therefore twelve total ship types available in the game. You start with three carracks in your fleet and (hopefully) end your game victoriously with a fleet of ironclads.
6. How many units of peasant labor is a single apprentice worker capable of producing each turn?

Answer: Four

An apprentice can do the work of four peasants, but in addition to a unit of food, they also consume a unit of refined sugar each turn. A journeyman does the work of six peasants, but requires a cigar each turn in addition to one unit of food. A master does eight units of production (that's two apprentices!) but requires a fur hat in addition to the one food.
7. In addition to a unit of food, what finished luxury item do master workers demand each turn?

Answer: A fur hat

Masters are capable of doing the work of eight peasant laborers, but the furs necessary to make fur hats are found only in the new world, and only rarely at that. The considerable training costs (10 units of paper and $1000) usually prevents most players from having large numbers of masters in their employ; in fact, by the end of the game, most production is done by apprentices and journeymen, mostly due to the readily available supplies of sugar and tobacco in the new world.
8. What is the fourth and final developmental stage of heavy infantry?

Answer: Guards

Grenadiers are third generation heavy infantry; rifle infantry are fourth generation medium infantry; cossacks are second generation light cavalry. Guards are the most potent infantry in the game; their firepower rivals that of third generation artillery (but with shorter range, of course).
9. What technology is necessary to build cossack units?

Answer: Recruit Steppe Horsemen

The other three technologies do not exist in this game. The technology has such a romantic-sounding name that I couldn't help but include it in the quiz.
10. How many resource units (total) are required to upgrade a tile to level three development?

Answer: Sixteen

It requires eight lumber and eight cast iron to upgrade to level three. It requires one of each for level one, four of each for level two and sixteen of each for level three. Well, that's the quiz (my first by the way). Hope you enjoyed taking it as much as I enjoyed making it.
