Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What dungeon in the Game Boy Advance port actually had one of its puzzles changed, which removed a large amount of backtracking?

Answer: Ice Palace

Toward the end of the Ice Palace, there is a portion where you must open a door by pushing a block onto a button on the floor. After pushing the block onto the button, there is noway to get to the door save for backtracking through a large portion of the dungeon. In the GBA port Nintendo changed the puzzle, cutting out the need to backtrack.

In the original, you can also cut out of backtracking provided you go to Misery Mire first and get the Cane of Somaria, which allows you to place a block onto the button.
2. What location appears on the Overworld Map in the Light World as a physical structure, but is nowhere to be seen as it is hidden when Link is in that part of the map?

Answer: Waterfall of Wishing

At the entrance to Zora's Domain on the Overworld Map there appears to be some sort of fountain. However, when you get to that area there is no fountain present nor any physical building at all. To get access to the Waterfall of Wishing, you must swim into the Waterfall, much like the original "Legend of Zelda". Once inside you will find a Great Faerie who will update your blue boomerang to a red boomerang and give you green magic potions for free.

If you talk to in Old Man in a bar in Kakariko Village, you will get this information:

"Whoa... I saw her. A very nice young lady at the Waterfall Of Wishing in the hills where the river begins... Link, you should meet her at least once. I'm sure you will like her."
3. In the Dark World, the Bomb Shop corresponds to what location in the Light World?

Answer: Link's House

Link's House transforms into a Bomb Shop in the Dark World. You must visit the Bomb Shop at least once in the game to purchase the Super Bomb. Link must purchase the Super Bomb in order to blow up a cracked wall in the Pyramid of Power so he can get the Silver Arrows that are required to defeat Ganon. He can also get the Golden Sword as well.

The Super Bomb becomes available after Link defeats the Ice Palace and the Misery Mire Dungeons.
4. What is the only special item that is required to kill one of the dungeon bosses that is hidden not in a dungeon but in a cave in the Light World?

Answer: Ice Rod

Link will find the Ice Rod hidden in a cave in the east side of Lake Hylia. Link must use the Ice Rod to defeat Trinexx, the final boss of the seventh dungeon in the Dark World, Turtle Rock. If you freeze enemies with the Ice Rod and smash them with the Magic Hammer you will often get large magic jars.
5. What dungeon boss requires the Hookshot to defeat?

Answer: Arrghus

In the second dungeon in the Dark World, Link faces what appears to be a giant jellyfish/octopus enemy that has several red balls surrounding its body. Link uses the Hookshot draw away the red balls and kill them. Once the last red ball is destroyed, Arrghus is vulnerable to Link's attack.
6. What Dark World Palace features land that is totally inaccessible from within the Dark World itself?

Answer: Misery Mire

You cannot enter Misery Mire from within the Dark World. Link must obtain the Flute and play the Flute in front of the Weathercock in Kakariko Village. The Weathercock will become a duck that transports Link to various locations in the Light World. One location is in the desert on a ledge otherwise inaccessible to Link. There is a teleportation device into the Dark World.

This is the only Dark World region that houses a dungeon is totally inaccessible from within the Dark World itself.
7. What is the only medallion in the game not needed to open a dungeon?

Answer: Bombos Medallion

There are three medallions in "A Link to the Past": the Bombos Medallion, the Quake Medallion, and the Ether Medallion. The Bombos Medallion which Link gets in the Desert of Mystery is the only one not needed to open a dungeon. The Ether Medallion, found near the the Tower of Hera, opens Turtle Rock.

The Quake Medallion, which Link gets after throwing an item into a circle of rocks in the Dark World (the same area where the Waterfall of Wishing is in the Light World) and awaking a fish monster that gives him the Medallion.
8. The Ghost of Misery Mire is an enigmatic feature of "A Link to the Past", and like the Chris Houlihan room is one of the more obscure elements of the game. According to Hyrule Magic, a level editor for "A Link to the Past", which are these ghosts of Misery Mire?

Answer: Fireball Zora

The Ghosts of Misery Mire are invisible enemies in Misery Mire. They always have the same starting locations within Misery Mire. Due to a game glitch, they are invisible and also cannot harm Link. They can be hurt. The easiest way to reveal the Ghosts are by using the Bombos Medallion

According to Hyrule Magic, which is a level editor for "Link to the Past" ROMs, these mystery enemies are actually Fireball Zoras.

There are three total invisible Fireball Zoras in the Mire.

The sand monsters in the Desert of Mystery, called Geldman, bear a possible connection the Gerudo of later games. In Japanese, Geld is the same as Gerudo, suggesting a relationship between the Geldmans and Geldarms and the desert race Gerudos. The Geldarms are the white arms in "Zelda II" and in "A Link to the Past" they appear similar to Mario's Pokeys. If you attack a Geldarm in "A Link to the Past" it will throw part of its body at you.

Snap Dragons are the result of a mad alchemist's ruthless experimentation, according to the game's manual. They never appear in the dungeons.
9. How many Silver Arrows must Link fire in order to end Ganon's reign of terror and restore Hyrule back to peace?

Answer: Four

After you get the Silver Arrows from the Fat Faerie in the Pyramid of Power, you must hit Ganon four times with them in order to defeat him. Link first must reveal Ganon by stabbing him with his sword, and then freeze him with the Ice Rod. After freezing him with the Ice Rod, Link may then fire his Silver Arrows.
10. Nintendo uses the Owl in "Link's Awakening" and "Ocarina of Time" as a wise and knowing character that helps guide Link along the way and imparts important information to the player. This type of role is fulfilled by who in "A Link to the Past".

Answer: Sahasrahla

Sahasrahla is Link's adviser throughout "A Link to the Past". Although Link only meets him once in the course of the game, Sahasrahla communicates with Link telepathically through communication tiles found in dungeon walls. Other than a question of how to implement the actual gameplay behind it, why Sahasrahla needs tiles if he can communicate telepathically is beyond me.

Between 1991 and 2009, Sahasrahla has not appeared in any other Zelda game, although the Owl fills the same type of role in the actual game. Like Joseph Campbell and his groundbreaking work "The Hero of a Thousand Faces", Sahasrahla, like George Lucas's Obiwan Kinobi, is the sage and wise adviser our hero turns to for guidance and direction when he is unsure what to do.
