When "Mass Effect" begins, Anderson is still captain of the Normandy, with Shepard as his "XO". He holds this position as a Commander of the Alliance Military.

Answer: Kaidan Alenko

Just before Shepard is officialy briefed on the mission, Shepard is in the cockpit of the Normandy. There he talks with Joker and Kaidan about the upcoming mission. Joker suspects the presence of a spectre, Nihlus, indicates the mission is everything but a simple shakedown run, whilst Kaidan beliefs Nihlus is only present to keep an eye on "their investments" - being the partially council-funded Normandy.

The player gets a conversational option to either side with Joker or Kaidan, or to just tell them both to act as soldiers.

Answer: Recover the Prothean beacon

The initial (and ultimate) objective was the recovery of the Prothean beacon. During the briefing, Joker interupts with footage from Eden Prime which shows Eden Prime is under attack. The attack only complicates the mission, but does not change the main objective. By coincidence, Ashley Williams is saved (and later recruited) during this mission.

Answer: Richard Jenkins

Shortly after landing Shepard and his team, consisting of Kaidan Alenko and Richard Jenkins, are ambushed by Geth assault drones. During this ambush Jenkins gets killed.

Answer: "The council thought you could use some help on this one."

Nihlus rather strangely accepts Saren's answer without a moment of hesitation, despite the fact the council could not have known the planet was under attack by the Geth. Unfortunately for Nihlus, just seconds after these words are spoken Saren shoots Nihlus in the back of the head.

Answer: Shepard shoves a squadmate aside and gets pulled by the beacon

After the fighting is done on Eden Prime, Shepard radios the Normandy for pick up. Meanwhile, Kaidan and Ashley investigate the beacon. Suddenly one of them (Kaidan if Shepard is male, Ashley if Shepard is female) gets pulled in by the beacon. Shepard rushes in and shoves the squadmate in, but gets pulled in instead and receives a vision from the beacon.

Answer: Garrus Vakarian

Just before Shepard and Udina present themselves before the Council, they witness a heated discussion between two Turians: C-Sec officer Garrus Vakarian and his superior Executor Pallin. Pallin orders the investigation of Saren Arterius closed, which enrages Garrus who was in charge of said investigation. This the first time Shepard encounters Garrus.

Answer: Tali'Zorah nar Rayya

During her pilgrimage Tali'Zorah nar Rayya encounters damning information in the memory core of a geth unit. Ultimately Tali is contacted by a volus on behalf of the Shadow Broker who is willing to ensure the information comes to good hands. The volus sets out to arrange a meeting where Tali can hand over the information and hides Tali in Chora's Den.

The owner of Chora's Den betrays Tali and sends her to meeting where Saren's henchmen await her. Shepard arrives just in time to see Tali attack her would-be assasins and helps her out.

This is the first encounter between Shepard and Tali.

Answer: Fist

Fist is the owner of Chora's Den and in fact an agent of Saren. After the fight at Chora's Den Fist can either be executed or released by Shepard, but if Wrex is part of the squad he executes Fist regardless.

Answer: Tevos, the asari councilor

Matriarchs are powerful within the Asari civilization. Benezia in particular was a very powerful biotic and was revered for her wisdom. Tevos mentions Benezia has many followers.
