Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which console was released first in North America: the Gamecube or the Microsoft Xbox?

Answer: Microsoft Xbox

The Microsoft Xbox was released on November 15, 2001 in North America, while Nintendo's Gamecube was released on November 18 of the same year, just three days later. The last system Sega has released up to date was the Dreamcast, which was in 1999.
2. What was the only first-party launch game Nintendo released for the Gamecube?

Answer: Luigi's Mansion

"Super Smash Bros. Melee" was released in December of 2001, the month after the Gamecube was released, and "Super Mario Sunshine" was released in 2002, the year after the Gamecube was released. "Super Monkey Ball" was a launch game, but it was not a first-party game. It was crafted by Amusement Vision and Sega.
3. What is the only "Mario Party" game released on the Gamecube to include Donkey Kong as a playable character in every mode of play?

Answer: Mario Party 4

"Mario Party 4" was the last game in the series to feature Donkey Kong as a playable character in all modes of gameplay. He is playable in "Mario Party 5" but only in one mode of gameplay. He is not playable in "Mario Party 6" or "Mario Party 7" in any modes of gameplay.
4. Which series had the most installments exclusively for the Gamecube?

Answer: Donkey Kong

"Mario", "Metroid", and "The Legend of Zelda" all had two exclusive games for the Gamecube; Mario had "Super Mario Sunshine" and "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door", The Legend of Zelda had "The Wind Waker" and "Four Swords Adventures", and Metroid had "Metroid Prime" and "Metroid Prime 2: Echoes". Donkey Kong had four, although one was released in Japan only.

They were "Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat", "Donkey Konga", "Donkey Konga 2", and "Donkey Konga 3".
5. In "Super Smash Bros. Melee", the Marin trophy is a reward for unlocking every playable character and every fighting stage. Which game is the character Marin from?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

"The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" was the first game in The Legend of Zelda series that failed to include the title character, Zelda. Instead, it had Marin and her friend (assumably her father), Tarin. These characters bear a strikingly resemblance in both name and appearance to two later characters who first appeared in the game's successor for the Nintendo 64, "The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time". Those characters are named Malon and Talon, and were not only included in "The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time", but have also been included in three more "Legend of Zelda" games since then.
6. Which of the following is not a color the official Nintendo Gamecube controllers came in in North America?

Answer: Gray

Nintendo released controllers for the Gamecube in the following colors in North America: spice (orange), black, indigo, and platinum (silver). There were also red and pink controllers for a limited time. However, Nintendo never released a gray Gamecube controller in North America.
7. Which of the following games did not eventually receive the "Best-Seller" rating?

Answer: Sonic Heroes

Nintendo generally uses the "Player's Choice" rating to signify any game that has sold 1 million copies or more worldwide. However, for the Gamecube, it changed that particular rating to "Best-Seller" and used "Player's Choice" to signify any game that sold 250,000 or more copies worldwide. Thus, "Sonic Mega Collection", "Mario Party 5", and "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess", each having sold over 1 million copies worldwide, have been given the "Best-Seller" rating.

While "Sonic Heroes" managed to sell over 250,000 copies worldwide, giving it the "Player's Choice" rating, it failed to reach 1 million, so it does not hold the "Best-Seller" rating.
8. Which character does not first appear as a playable character in "Mario Kart: Double Dash"?

Answer: Petey Piranha

While King Boo first appeared in "Super Mario 64" for the Nintendo 64, his first time as a playable character was in "Mario Kart: Double Dash". Toadette made her first appearance and debut as a playable character in "Mario Kart: Double Dash". Petey Piranha, who first appeared as a boss in "Super Mario Sunshine" made his second appearance as a playable character in "Mario Kart: Double Dash"; he could be used in "Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour" released a few months earlier.
9. How many "Fire Emblem" games or games with "Fire Emblem" elements were released by Nintendo during the time of the Nintendo Gamecube?

Answer: Five

There was only one "Fire Emblem" game for the Nintendo Gamecube, which was "Path of Radiance". However, there were three Nintendo Gameboy Advance games in the Fire Emblem series, the first, translated as "Fire Emblem: The Binding Blades", was released only in Japan; the second was released in North America as simply "Fire Emblem", and the third in North America as "Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones".

The fifth game to include "Fire Emblem" elements during the time of the Nintendo Gamecube was "Super Smash Bros. Melee" which features Marth and Roy, characters from the "Fire Emblem" series, as playable characters, as well as one song from the "Fire Emblem" games. "Super Smash Bros. Melee" was the first game released outside of Japan to incorporate anything "Fire Emblem" related.
10. Exactly how long, in months and days, between the release of the Nintendo Wii and the release of the final Nintendo Gamecube game in North America?

Answer: 8 months, 26 days

The Gamecube's successor, the Nintendo Wii, was first officially released on November 19, 2006. The last first-party game for the Gamecube, "Twilight Princess", was released soon after, on December 11 (in North America). However, five third-party games were released for the Gamecube in 2007, the last of which was "Madden NFL 08", which was released on August 14, 2007, exactly 8 months and 26 days after the Nintendo Wii.
