Noteworthy Games of 2009 Trivia Quiz

Nintendo really excelled in 2009, pushing things further with the capabilities of the DS and the Wii. This is a top ten list, in my opinion, of the games that I've been able to play that were released in the United States in 2009.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. #10 - "DJ Hero" (Wii) - What is NOT a color of a button on the turntable peripheral?

Answer: yellow

"DJ Hero," much like its predecessor the "Guitar Hero" series, was also available on XBox 360 and Playstation 3 game consoles. Also the game was released with a new peripheral in the shape of a DJ Deck. The game still followed pressing colored buttons when they came down the track, but also there was a slide used for crossfading, an effect dial for distorting sound or cycling through tracks, and a button used for releasing Euphoria which is the "DJ Hero" version of Star Power. Also to boost your score, if accumulating a long enough streak you can rewind the track.

Many of the songs you will play in this game are mixes of two songs such as "Feel Good Inc." by the Gorillaz being mixed with "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani. Much like "Guitar Hero" the game has a varied soundtrack by going back to older songs such as "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye. Unlike "Guitar Hero" the new peripheral only has three buttons, green, red, and blue, and the record surface that these buttons are located on can be moved back and forth for scratching and twist a full revolution for rewinds. Also the game sponsors multiplayer either with two turntable peripherals or a turntable peripheral and a guitar controller, but only for certain songs.
2. #9 - "Pokemon Platinum" (DS ) -How many Pokemon, that can be found in the wild, were added to the Sinnoh Pokedex that were not in the Sinnoh Pokedex in the Diamond and Pearl versions? (Note: These are Pokemon that can be found in the wild before getting the National Pokedex and does not include Pokemon that there is only one of such as Giratina and Rotom.)

Answer: Twenty-two

For the most part the Sinnoh Pokedex in "Pokemon Platinum" is the same as it was in "Pokemon Diamond" and "Pokemon Pearl." From Turtwig to Manaphy, the first 151 entries are the same. The fifty-nine Pokemon that were added are in entries found after Manaphy.

These include mostly new Pokemon such as Gliscor and Froslass but also include old favorites such as Houndoom. For those of you wondering why the answer wasn't fifty-nine, the reason is because I asked which ones can be caught in the wild, and can be caught more than once.

Some of these Pokemon can be only obtained by evolving or catching with a Poke Radar or Pal Park, both which you only get access to after getting the National Pokedex. "Pokemon Platinum" was the third game from the Sinnoh region which it has been common since the beginning that a third version is released with every two parings of Pokemon.

The only exception to this is "Pokemon FireRed" and "Pokemon LeafGreen" which were remakes of the original adventure in Kanto.

In the year 2010, remakes of the Johto region will be released as well called "Pokemon SoulSilver" and "Pokemon HeartGold" both for the DS. "Pokemon Platinum" also included the ever popular Battle Frontier first introduced in "Pokemon Emerald." As the cover of the game suggests Giratina, a Ghost/Dragon type, is the main Pokemon in this game. However, other legendaries can be captured in this game most notable are the three legendary birds Zapdos, Articuno, and Moltres. Also "Pokemon Platinum" adds new forms for some Pokemon such as Giratina, Shaymin, and Rotom, all which require a certain item.
3. #8 - "Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box" (DS) - What is the combination for the safe in the mine?

Answer: 0154

"Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box" is a sequel to "Professor Layton and the Curious Village" also for the DS. The Professor Layton series are mainly "point and click" adventures that are made up of brain teasers to move along. In this adventure Layton and his apprentice Luke are investigating the mystery of the Elysian Box, a container that is said to kill anyone who opens it. For the most part, this game is relatively the same as it's predecessor except with different puzzles and a different story.

At E3 2010, the next Professor Layton Game, "Professor Layton and the Unwound Future," was announced to be released in the United States in September of 2010.
4. #7 - "Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story" (DS) - What is the combination for the safe that holds the second Star Core?

Answer: 9898 88241 983

"Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story" is the third of the "Mario and Luigi" RPG-style franchise that started with "Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga" for the Game Boy Advance. This franchise is most noted for it's ability to be funnier than most RPG's because of it's wacky humor.

In this story, Mario and Luigi get swallowed by Bowser, unbeknownst to him" and while Bowser tries to get his castle back, Mario and Luigi, battle enemies inside Bowser, while in the process, getting him new abilities such as breathing fire or performing a sliding punch. Also in several cases, they make Bowser grow huge and Bowser battles a giant boss by means of using the stylus on the touch screen and the microphone.

While the majority of the first half of the game is mainly Bowser and Mario and Luigi being miniscule. Mario and Luigi are eventually able to get out of Bowser via warp pipes. Like most RPGs that Mario has starred in, Bowser is not the main villain. Rather the main villain is Fawful who was the henchman to Cackletta in "Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga."
5. #6 - "Scribblenauts" (DS) - What is NOT one of the occupations of the people found in Puzzle 1-1?

Answer: lawyer

"Scribblenauts" very closely followed the same mechanics as the "Drawn to Life" series but it was much more complex. Using either a keyboard, or writing, and object (as long as it was a noun) would make things appear. It could be anything simplistic as a ladder or something as complex as a Megalodon.

These items would help you reach something called a Starite. However, there are some certain conditions of the game. For one example, you need to lead a cow across the screen, but there's a butcher in the way who needs meat.

While it would make sense to kill the butcher so that he's not a problem you can't do that. When completing a puzzle you get money based on originality, time, and objects used. This money will help you buy more worlds.

In each world there are puzzles and actions. Puzzle problems require you to draw objects to fulfill a problem such as getting three flowers for a botanist. Actions require you to reach the Starite. In 2010, it was announced that another "Scribblenauts" was in the works called "The New Scribblenauts" in which adjectives play a huge part in the game.
6. #5 - "Rabbids Go Home" (Wii) - What is the name of the medical patient in the stage "Infectious Blues?"

Answer: Barney

With the mini-game franchises such as "Mario Party" and "WarioWare" the game "Rayman: Raving Rabbids" followed this formula three times before changing it. Rayman has been completely removed as the humorous Rabbids take the stage in an adventure. The premise of the game is relatively simple, run around in a shopping cart gathering all sorts of things to build a pile to the moon which the Rabbids think is their new home.

However, obstacles such as dogs, planes, and other obstacles can hinder the Rabbid's progress.

There are two types of items. There are XS things which include dolls, pop cans, and even clothes you can scare off people with a "Bwaaaah" attack. Then there is XL stuff which are usually found near the end of a level. When the level is done, all the stuff you collected is flushed down a toilet.

As you gain more ground more levels are opened up and new ways to customize your Rabbids are unlocked. One thing that the Rabbids have always been famous for is their simplistic humor from a very limited vocabulary and zany actions of the little white rodent menaces.

This is no exception as when collecting certain items there are little cut scenes that show the Rabbids experiencing their new items. One such example is an answering machine in which the Rabbids record a loud scream on it and play it back making them laugh.
7. #4 - "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" (Wii) - Which Koopaling's fortress is a vertical climb in which you must constantly avoid a spiked spire?

Answer: Morton

Morton Koopa is the boss or World 6, Wendy O. Koopa guards World 4, Roy Koopa is in World 2, and Ludwig Von Koopa is the boss of World 7. The Koopalings were first introduced in "Super Mario Bros. 3" and last appeared in "Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga" for the Game Boy Advance.

They were basically replaced after introducing Bowser Jr. in "Super Mario Sunshine" for the Gamecube. It was the same way in "New Super Mario Bros." for the DS as Bowser Jr. was the mid boss many times. Bowser Jr. is still in this game but he serves as the boss for airship battles in which there are three.

However, in the worlds, each Koopaling has a fortress and a castle, all which are a little different. In the fortress, for the most part they are defeated with three jumps on the head, every now and then having some hazards.

For example, Morton's has two spiked spires on the sides of his stage that you must avoid. In their castle, it's mostly the same battle but Kamek comes and usually transforms the stage.

The first boss Larry Koopa, Kamek makes the stage move up and down. The "New Super Mario Bros." was widely accepted as it was a 2-D platformer that went back to the roots of the original "Super Mario Bros." but added some new twists along with adding some new qualities such as wall kicking and the triple jump. Also new powers were added such as the Penguin Suit in the Wii version or the Mega Mushroom in the DS version. Also Star Coins, 3 hidden in each stage, gave an extra goal besides beating the stage. In "New Super Mario Bros." these Star Coins were used for unlocking gates to Toad Houses. In "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" they are used for purchasing videos on getting infinite lives or finding Star Coins and getting secret exits. Also they are used for gaining access to the levels in World 9, unlocked after beating Bowser. You must collect all the Star Coins in a world to unlock a level in World 9.
8. #3 - "Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days" (DS) - When is the Infernal Tank most susceptible to physical damage?

Answer: When it exposes its battering ram

The Infernal Tank is the huge (non pureblood) Heartless that you must fight in Beast's Castle. In most worlds, there is a very large Heartless that releases a big heart once defeating it. The Infernal Tank is one and another one is the Antlion found in Agrabah.

The Infernal Tank you fight on the bridge which is the same place you fought Xaldin in "Kingdom Hearts II". "Kingdom Hearts: 358/2" Days is the second of the "Kingdom Hearts" franchise to be released by Nintendo, the first being "Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories" for the Game Boy Advance.

The game goes back to it's original battle system rather than using cards, but there is a panel system that is used. You install panels to give you abilities such as Dodge Rolls, new weapons, magics, and panels to level you up. You start out with a small amount of panels but as you progress through the story, completing every mission gets you a Slot Releaser which gives you an extra panel. Unlike previous "Kingdom Hearts" games, "Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days" does not focus too much on the Disney factor as Organization XIII is not supposed to be spotted by characters.

However, some characters such as the Genie and Phil see you no matter what. The game mainly focuses on Roxas, which players met in the beginning of "Kingdom Hearts II." Roxas is Sora's Nobody as Sora gave up his heart in "Kingdom Hearts" to save Kairi. Throughout the story you will take on missions, sometimes with other members of the Organization including the newest member Xion, the only other member who can use the Keyblade. These missions usually involve defeating Heartless, taking down a giant boss, or doing recon. This game takes place around the same time that Sora and Riku were traveling through Castle Oblivion in "Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories".
9. #2 - "Rhythm Heaven" (DS) - Every game uses only the Touch Screen. Exclude pausing the game.

Answer: False

No there is one game that uses the R button and that is "Rockers 2." With the numerous amount of mini-game compilations along with the many musical games, many would think that "Rhtythm Heaven" would just be another repetition of what already was. Kind of having the appearance of an underdog though, no dazzling graphics, no deep story, relatively simplistic gameplay, "Rhythm Heaven" became a very successful hit. With the 51 plus mini-games and gadgets that "Rhythm Heaven" has to offer the majority of the games are played either by flicking, tapping, or tapping and holding the stylus.

As you progress you either get a silver or gold medal depending on your performance. Also at certain times, a chance to get a reward if you score on a game perfectly appears.

The reward could be something to read or the song to a certain game. For each tier you play four games and then it ends with a remix mostly consisting of the games you just played. A demo for "Rhythm Heaven" was offered on the Nintendo Channel on the Wii and consisted of the first three games: Fillbots, Glee Club and Built to Scale.
10. And the #1 game that I have played that was released in 2009 is... #1 - "The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks" (DS) - When facing away from the entrance in the Snow Temple, what is the order you must hit the bells in the last time?

Answer: left, middle, middle, right, middle

In the Snow Temple, you must put bells in slots, and hit them a certain way to unlock doors. The first sequence you have to hit the middle bell twice. You will then shortly get the boomerang after and you must push the right bell into it's slot and play the rhythm shown somewhere in the dungeon with the boomerang to maintain the correct rhythm, and then you must do the same when the third bell is in place. "The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks" is fashioned with the same cartoony look that "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker," and "The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass" were fashioned after. But instead of a boat, Link must use a train to get around. In "Phantom Hourglass" one thing that a lot of people complained about was having to go through the same motion over and over when trying to get Sea Charts from the Temple of the Ocean King. In "Spirit Tracks" you must go back to the Tower of Spirits time and time again to get rail maps but unlike the previous game you are allowed to bypass what parts of the tower you've already done. Another thing that is a first for "The Legend of Zelda" franchise is that you get to play as Zelda. While in the Tower of Spirits you must collect three Tears of Light and then strike a Phantom in the back and Zelda will possess it.

Other games relaesed in 2009 that deserve recognition are: "Guitar Hero 5" (Wii), "Lego Rock Band" (Wii and DS), "New Play Control Donkey Kong Jungle Beat" (Wii), and "Tales of Monkey Island" (WiiWare).
