"Ocarina of Time" Spirit Temple Quiz

This quiz is about the last temple in "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". The Spirit Temple is my favorite temple in any Zelda game. This quiz also covers the Desert Colossus and River of Sand areas.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many Gold Skulltulas can you find in the Haunted Wasteland?

Answer: 1

This Skulltula is found in the structure surrounded by flags in the River of Sand. To get there, you must first use the Longshot on a box to get over the quicksand. Then, you must follow the path of flags or else you will be automatically returned to the beginning of the area. Once you enter the structure, you will find a Gold Skulltula and two torches. Kill the Skulltula for a token and then if you want to, you can light the torches for a chest containing 50 rupees. Outside of the structure, if you use the Lens of Truth, you will find a Poe Ghost hovering around. If you talk to him, he will guide you along the twisty random path that leads to the Desert Colossus. I'm not exactly sure what the point of that twisty walkway is, but it can get confusing and the leevers (spiky enemies) certainly don't help. I think the colossus should get a new escort. Most visitors who go there want as abrupt a trip as physically possible -not travel the ritualistic walkway to nowhere.
2. The bosses of the Spirit Temple are two witches with the power to shoot fire or ice at you. What is the name of the witch that shoots ice?

Answer: Kotake

The names of the witches are Koume and Kotake. To defeat their first stage, you must use your Mirror Shield to deflect either the fire of ice attack at the opposite twin. Do this repeatedly and the two twins will join forces and become Twinrova. To defeat Twinrova, you must use your Mirror Shield to absorb three of the same attack in a row. Once you have absorbed the attacks, a beam of either fire or ice will come out and hit her, making her scram in an annoying high-pitched voice and collapse onto a platform.

Then, all you must do is jump over to the platform she lands on and then slash her with your sword. Do this until she dies and then Koume and Kotake will have an interesting argument about their ages as the fly into the sky surrounded by a beam of light. Apparently the two "twins" were born a decade or two apart.

It must have been a hard birth for their mother!
3. What is the name of the "Sage of Spirit"?

Answer: Nabooru

Nabooru is both the "Sage of Spirit" and the female ruler of the all female Gerudo Thieves (Ganondorf is the male leader and the only male born to a Gerudo in 100 years). Now, reading this, you would wonder how the Gerudos have children at all, but the answer is explained by a gossip stone.

It says that sometimes, Gerudos go to Hyrule Castle Town to find boyfriends (which somewhat resembles part of the book "Lirael", by Garth Nix except vice versa). You first meet Nabooru in the first room of the Spirit Temple as a child. Talk to her and she will ask you to find some Silver Gauntlets for her. Once you complete this first part of the Temple, Nabooru will get captured by Koume and Kotake.

This will leave you with the Silver Gauntlets which you can use as an adult to lift silver rocks and push giant blocks (Hey! That rhymes!). You do not see her again until you find yourself facing a gigantic Iron Knuckle, who happens to be a brainwashed Nabooru.

She also hits on Link in the Chamber of Sages, and Link doesn't usually date older women, but once in a while, I think he makes an exception.
4. What is the name of the enemy vulnerable to fire that mimics your movement.

Answer: Anubis

Anubises only appear in the Spirit Temple. The first one you find is in the room after the one with the Stalfos Knights as a child. To defeat it, you can use Din's Fire on it, or you can shoot the crystal switch on the other side of the room with the Slingshot.
5. When does the female leader of the Gerudos get the Silver Gauntlets?

Answer: She never does

Nabooru, the female leader of the Gerudos, never gets the Silver Gauntlets back because she falls into a black-magic wormhole directly after you find them as a child (What a shame. I find that quite poingant). When you finally find her again as an adult, she is either an Iron Knuckle, or needs to go to the Chamber of Sages. I personally think it's very sad that she never gets her pretty gauntlets back, but they are a great asset to Link in Ganon's Castle, or just uselessly lifting up silver boulders.

But even though they're wonderful gauntlets, Link just discards them when he gets the golden gauntlets. I know plenty of people who would want to be able to push 80 ton blocks, but in this cruel, cruel world, things don't always work out the way you want them to.
6. As a child, you find yourself in a room with two Lizalfos and a crys-tal switch. By shooting the crystal switch, you make a treasure chest appear. What's in this chest?

Answer: Bombchus

This room is just about the only place in the game where Bombchus are needed to get past it. When you enter the room, you will notice a Sun Symbol. These appear all around the Spirit Temple. To make any Sun Symbol happy, you must shine light on it. Usually, you reflect some light on it with the Mirror Shield or an intricate series of mirrors, but this time, you must open a skylight. On a wall in the room, there are a couple of cracks.

This is your target. You must carefully aim your Bombchus for the crack (this can be hard, especially if you have a short attention span). If you successfully blow a hole it the wall, a ray of light will shine down on the Sun Symbol, unlocking the door. You know, Bombchus are items that you always find in chests in a random hole, but you almost never use them.

They are fun in Bombchu Bowling, but that's only as a child. You can also buy Bombchus from a guy on a "magic carpet" in the River of Sand for 200 rupees.
7. What age do you need to be to get the Piece of Heart in the Desert Colossus?

Answer: Adult

To get this Piece of Heart you must first plant a Magic Bean in the dirt patch as a child, and in case you never noticed, you can only fly on a Magic Bean as an adult. This being said, the rest is self explanatory. As an adult, jump on the Magic Bean, and get off at the arc with the Piece of Heart on it.
8. How many times do you need to collect Silver/White Rupees in the Spirit Temple (Silver/White Rupees usually need to be collected to open doors or make treasure chests appear)?

Answer: 3

The first time you must collect Silver Rupees is in the room with the chain-link fence and Fire Keese as a child. There is also a Gold Skulltula in this room. The second time is in the room with the Sun Sign Blocks and torches also as a child. You must collect all the silver rupees to light the first torch.

Then use a Deku Stick to light the unlit torches to result in a chest appearing containing a Small Key. Finally, you must collect rupees as an adult in the room with a blue Time Block and rolling boulders. Playing the "Song of Time" for the Time Block will cause it to disintegrate revealing a Gold Skulltula. You must collect all the silver rupees to open a door on the far side of the room.

There are also silver rupees in other temples and all over the Shadow Temple (just thinking about that temple makes me shiver with annoyance and despair).
9. What is the name of the song that warps you to the Desert Colossus?

Answer: "Requiem of Spirit"

You learn this song as an adult in the Desert Colossus. Sheik teaches it to you because you need to return there as a child and you can't get past the Gerudos at that age. The "Requiem of Spirit" is also a cool minor song.
10. What is the name of the item you receive from the Great Fairy in the Desert Colossus?

Answer: Nayru's Love

To get into the cave where the Great Fairy lives, you must place a bomb in front of the crack on the edge of Desert Colossus between two palm trees. Then, you must play "Zelda's Lullaby" while standing on the Triforce symbol, causing the Great Fairy to appear.

It's actually surprising how ugly this fairy is (no offense if you admire her natural beauty or believe in inner beauty as the morally correct form). She only wears vines and has a creepy voice and you are shown a very unwanted and grotesque 360 degree view of her when you first meet her.

She will then reward you with Nayru's Love, an item that creates an impenetrable barrier around you which proves quite useful while fighting Iron Knuckles only for a bit of magic (this item also works while you are a child). Two other items similar to this one are Din's Fire which creates a spreading wave of fire around you can get as a child near Hyrule Castle and Farore's Wind which warps you back to a warp point you can create with it at any point in a Temple.
