Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First appearing on Routes 110 and 118 in "Ruby" and "Sapphire", it learns Wild Charge in later generations.

Answer: Electrike

Electrike is an unevolved electric-type that can be found in parts of the Hoenn region and who appears in the Pokedex there as #078. Evolving into the 'Discharge Pokemon' Manectric at level 26, it would later receive a Mega Evolution in "Pokemon X" and "Pokemon Y" when holding Manectite. Electrike's abilities lean into physical and electric-type moves that don't have too much pizazz in early generations. Eventually he becomes one of the few Pokemon to naturally learn Wild Charge (at level 49 in its first appearance), sharing that trait with Pikachu, Shinx, and Blitzle.
2. A dark-type Pokemon who could achieve a Mega Evolution with, in Japan, Hellganite.

Answer: Houndoom

Although it was known as Hellganite in Japanese copies of the game, North American and EU players might have used the item known explicitly as Houndoominite in "Pokemon X" and "Pokemon Y", evolving Houndoom into Mega Houndoom. Houndoom itself first appeared in "Pokemon Gold" and "Pokemon Silver" as one of the new dark-type options.

The evolved form of Houndour (evolving at level 24), it could not be found in the wild.
3. Considered the 'Bite Pokemon', it debuted in Hoenn as Pokedex #010.

Answer: Poochyena

This grey canine Pokemon introduced in "Pokemon Ruby" and "Pokemon Sapphire" was another dark-type dog offering brought into the game though this time it was a viable early catch (found on Routes 101, 102, and 103) able to evolve into a larger hyena-like Pokemon, Mightyena, at the relatively low level of 18. It's a speedy Pokemon that relies on physical attacks.

Interestingly, Drednaw, introduced in "Pokemon Sword" and "Pokemon Shield", was also referred to as the 'Bite Pokemon'.
4. A bipedal fighting/steel-type, it levels up with friendship.

Answer: Lucario

In addition to needing high friendship to be levelled up, your Riolu must also level up during the day, making this Pokemon just a bit harder to obtain. This canine first shows up in "Pokemon Black" and "Pokemon White" and must be evolved to be obtained.

It's harder than you think-- you need to hatch the predecessor, Riolu, from a specific egg obtained on Iron Island. Lucario also has a Mega Evolution in "X" and "Y" if you grab Lucarionite. And yes, this is the Pokemon who also transitioned to "Super Smash Bros. Brawl".
5. Originally a normal-type Pokemon upon its debut, it became a fairy-type in "Pokemon X" and "Pokemon Y".

Answer: Snubbull

Originally slotted in at #123 in the Johto Pokedex, Snubbull was only found on Route 38 in its debut game, acting as a physically-inclined normal-type in battle and evolving into Granbull at level 23. Both are bipedal bulldog Pokemon. By the time "Pokemon X" and "Pokemon Y" appear on the scene, their movesets evolve quite a bit to include different elemental types at early levels, eventually leaning into dark-type attacks towards the end of their learning-and-levelling phase.

They were not obtainable upon release of "Pokemon Sword" and "Pokemon Shield".
6. This first generation Pokemon evolves with a Fire Stone.

Answer: Growlithe

Growlithe originally appeared at #58 in the Kanto Pokedex as a fire-type canine found primarily in the Pokemon Mansion on Cinnabar Island (though getting him in "Pokemon Blue") wasn't necessarily the easiest to do. In those first games, the Fire Stone was only usable on a very small handful of Pokemon, allowing Growlithe to involve into Arcanine, Vulpix to evolve into Ninetales, and Eevee to evolve into Flareon.
7. Caught in Kalos, this Pokemon's hair can be trimmed into nine different styles.

Answer: Furfrou

Known as Trimmien in Japan, this poodle-like Pokemon's appearance designates its attitude in "Pokemon X" and "Pokemon Y" (though it returns in Alola in "Ultra Sun" and "Ultra Moon". In addition to fighting, as Pokemon do, Furfrou has the distinct ability to take on different styles when groomed.

The nine trims you can use are Star, Diamond, Heart, Pharaoh, Kabuki, La Reine, Matron, Dandy, and Debutante. If left alone for long enough, its hair will grow out and require a new trim.
8. Its signature move is Sketch.

Answer: Smeargle

Debuting in generation two, Smeargle could be caught in the Ruins of Alph. Interestingly, this Pokemon created a new method of growth in the game because its Sketch technique allowed it to permanently learn moves made by opponents in battle (while, normally, Pokemon learn their own moves).

This means that a Smeargle has the potential to learn the vast majority of techniques in the game. A beagle Pokemon, it walks on two feet and uses its tail as a paintbrush.
9. The middle stage of an evolution, this 'Loyal Dog Pokemon' could be caught at Cold Storage in "Pokemon Black" and "Pokemon White".

Answer: Herdier

Herdier evolves from Lillipup at level 16 at which point you need to double its level to 32 to reach the final evolution, Stoutland. All three are strictly normal-type Pokemon relying on physical attacks to get aggressive in battle. Although Herdier and Stoutland can both be caught in the wild in their debut generation (the fifth), only Lillipup can be caught in the proceeding two (none appeared when "Sword" and "Shield" released) forcing you to go through the motions of evolution to get the others.
10. Not actually a dog Pokemon.

Answer: Pyroar

Pyroar first showed up in the roster in "X" and "Y", being able to be caught in the Friend Safari, but the crux of this is that it is notably not a dog. Pyroar takes on the appearance of a lion, making it a feline. Evolved from Litleo at level 35, it's a fire/normal-type Pokemon that learns a notable amount of physical and special attacks, all of which also translate over, in full, if you trade for it in "Sun" and "Moon".
