Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The famous Italian plumber had never disappointed with his amazing adventures, and his 2007 one was no exception. Using the complex and intuitive controls of the Nintendo Wii, the infamous plumber was no longer limited to linear jumping and moving, but he now had the option to do moves that defy gravity and physics. What 2007 game was this?

Answer: Super Mario Galaxy

"Super Mario Galaxy" felt a lot like a successor to the N64's "Super Mario 64". The gameplay of "Galaxy" fells just as revolutionary and fresh as it had for the N64 predecessor. After being invited by Peach to her castle, Bowser attacked and left the parts of the world in orbit, including poor Mario. Mario was then forced to find Bowser and save Peach, by defying gravity and the conventions of the modern platformer game. Mario could run upside down, float, and, of course, wear special hats with powers. Most game critics said that it was truly a return to the good old days of Mario. "Super Mario Galaxy" claimed game of the year honors from IGN, Gamespot, and Yahoo.
2. When a game series is successful in its chosen timeline, the common thing would be to continue the sequels along the same timeline. Not with this particular game. Developed by Activision for the PC, PS3, and X-Box 360, this game deviated from its all too common WWII theme and went for a more realistic and "modern" feel. What game was this?

Answer: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

"COD4" was the first in the series to take place in the modern day, and it certainly did not change its award-winning gameplay. With vastly improved graphics over its WWII predecessors, and super intelligent AI, the game provided constant challenge and visual ecstasy that no other game of the genre could mimic. Featuring a special edition and a regular edition, sales went through the roof in the beginning of the game's release.

It also proved to be a consistently well rated game, receiving such grades as a 9.2/10 from Electronic Gaming Monthly, a 10/10 from Game Informer and a 9.4/10 from IGN. Those don't even tap the surface of the reviews the game received.
3. Released for the PC and X-Box 360, this genetically enhanced game placed the player into one of the most disturbing locales in gaming. The setting was an underwater city called "Rapture", where genetic experiments and plasmids have taken their toll on the local population. "Would you kindly" tell me the name of the game?

Answer: Bioshock

The game started interestingly enough, with the player going down in a plane crash and finding their way to the underwater city of Rapture. Discovering deformed, crazy citizens the player finds themselves involved in a conspiracy bigger than originally imagined.

The main character was revealed to have originally been born in Rapture, with his father being the founder Andrew Ryan. Beautifully rendered, complex and nerve-racking, "Bioshock" rarely disappointed the player. "Bioshock" was also incredibly received by the usually harsh critics. "Bioshock" received a 10/10 from EGM, Game Informer, Official X-Box Magazine and many others.

It also received game of the year honors from BAFTA and television's "X-Play".
4. One cannot talk about the best games of 2007 without at least mentioning this game. Using the "CryEngine 2", this game broke all boundaries when it came to graphics technology in games. Released exclusively for the PC, this game put the player into the perspective of a soldier named "Nomad". "Nomad" controlled a nanosuit which gave the player new attributes including speed, invisibility, super-strength and armor. What game was this?

Answer: Crysis

Warning, "Crysis" is not for the everyday computer! "Crysis" would literally eat up a computer not equipped to handle it. Featuring tremendous graphics from the "CryEngine 2", the game made short work of most computers in 2007. A computer with 2GB of RAM, dual core processor, and a 512MB NVidia GeForce 8800GT, couldn't even max out the game.

It was rather funny because when "Crysis" was first shown, the members of the company claimed that great graphics at near maximum settings could be achieved using a GeForce 7 series graphics card; not quite.

While the shooting and the gameplay itself was nothing special, the graphics on its highest settings were photo realistic. Life-like physics were also introduced to the game. Trees could be shot down, buildings could crumble, and water would ripple according to the different forces acting on it. "Crysis" received awards in 2007 for best shooter and best graphics from Gamespot.
5. The "Orange Box" was one of the greatest gaming compilations ever released. Available on the PC, PS3 and the X-BOX 360, the "Orange Box" put several of Valve Corporation's greatest and newest games onto a five game package; six on PC. Which of the following was not one of the games included in any version the "Orange Box"?

Answer: Team Fortress Classic

Despite being advertised as containing only five games in one box, the "Orange Box"(PC) also included an exclusive ten level puzzle game called "Peggle Extreme". The other games on the "Orange Box" included "Portal", "Half Life 2", "Half Life 2: Episodes One and Two", and "Team Fortress 2". "Portal" was an innovative puzzle shooter where the player had a gun capable of shooting portals. Using cognitive thinking, the player had to find their way out of Aperture Science using the portal gun.

The "Half Life" games focused on the exploits of the voiceless character, Gordon Freeman as he battled his way through City 17 and the surrounding forest. "Team Fortress 2" was an online multiplayer shooter. Featuring cartoonish graphics, amazing sound effects, and pure teamwork orientation, "Team Fortress 2" was more than a worthy sequel to "Team Fortress Classic".

The box set idea was also well received with the "Orange Box" receiving perfect 100% scores from 1up.com, Gamepro, and Edge. It also received the Spike Videogame Awards for "Best PC Game" and "Breakthrough Technology".
6. This sci-fi role playing game was developed by BioWare for the X-Box 360 ad PC. Taking place in the 22nd century, this real time role playing game put the player into the perspective of a soldier named Shepard. Soon into the game, anger and conflict erupt, adding to a game every bit as magical as "Neverwinter Nights", or "Jade Empire". What game was this?

Answer: Mass Effect

"Mass Effect" was an RPG made in the same tradition as many other BioWare games in the past. The main difference this time around, was that the game wasn't a fantasy hack and slash game set in mystical kingdoms or the "Star Wars" universe. Instead, the game took place in a much darker sci-fi setting that really opened up doors when it came to freedom.

The player could go many places, genetically modify themselves and teach themselves new skills. The hard work of the BioWare team in Edmonton really paid off with high sales and amazing review scores from such sources as IGN, Official X-Box Magazine, Game Informer, and television's "X-Play".
7. Developed by Ubisoft for the PS3, X-Box 360, and PC, this game put the player into the role of a hired killer in the crusades. Featuring stunning graphics, amazing free-running effects and a tremendous degree of freedom, this game certainly did not disappoint. What game was this?

Answer: Assassin's Creed

"Assassin's Creed" was in production for more than two years, allowing for a refined product. The environments of the game were gorgeous, allowing for some amazing combat, running and stunting. Lighting effects were photorealistically integrated into the experience. Refreshingly, the high production values did not translate into an inferior product, which often occurs with companies taking too long to make a game. "Assassin's Creed" received astounding ratings from multiple sources including a 9.5/10 from Game Informer and a 10/10 from Play Magazine.
8. Bungie Studios' biggest gaming masterpiece was released in 2001. It received it's first sequel in 2004, and in 2007 it saw the release of a third and final iteration. Starring Master Chief, the game once again put the player into a first person perspective and took them on a journey to destroy the Covenant. Which hit sequel was this?

Answer: Halo 3

"Halo 3" started production shortly after "Halo 2" was released, in 2004. As soon as it's announcement was made, fans were eagerly anticipating the conclusion of the epic "Halo" saga. Upon release, "Halo 3" beat "Halo 2" to become the highest grossing video game in its first 24 hours of release. "Halo 3" was viewed almost entirely positively, but several complaints were made about its short and relatively easy single player mode. Regardless, hundreds of certified game reviewers gave "Halo 3" perfect scores. Among them were 1up.com, Official X-Box Magazine, and Eurogamer.
9. Back in 1986, a nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine leaked toxic radioactive matter and endangered the entirety of Europe. What would have happened if the leak was never contained and there was still a hot-zone where all sorts of people, mutants and animals lived in constant conflict. This game shed light on that possibility and more as the "Marked One" battled his way through "The Zone". What game was this?

Answer: STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl

"STALKER" was developed by a Ukrainian game company named GSC Game World. Using the format of a wide open sandbox first person shooter, "STALKER" blended the best elements of "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" and several shooters to create a unique and mystifying game experience.

The player could take missions from multiple factions, or the player could go rogue and kill everything. Multitudes of weapons, power enhancing artifacts, and hidden locales, made "STALKER" one of the best of 2007. Generally, critics also liked it, giving "STALKER" solid scores between 8 and 8.5/10.
10. Capitalizing on the "Guitar Hero" franchise's success, this game for the PS3 and X-Box 360 took the musical genre to a new level. No longer was the player limited to only a guitar; now the player and his/her friends could do everything from bass guitar, to vocals, to drums, or even lead guitar. What game of 2007 was this?

Answer: Rock Band

"Rock Band" was Harmonix Games' answer for Activision's "Guitar Hero" franchise. "Rock Band" worked much in the same way as "GH" but instead of limiting the player to one instrument, the player was allowed to run a complete band. Lots of downloadable content made the game a popular one.

The critics had positive things to say about it, as well, with critics like EGM, IGN, and X-Play giving it scores of 9.0/10, 9.4/10, and 5/5 respectively. The primary complaint many gamers had over the game was over the fact that the instrument peripherals had a tendency to break, much more than "Guitar Hero's". Thanks for playing my quiz.
