Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What would you do with a "tallerken"?

Answer: Eat from it

"Tallerken" is the Norwegian word for plate. A "flat tallerken" is an ordinary plate, a "dyp (deep) tallerken" is a bowl and a "flygende (flying) tallerken" is a flying saucer or UFO!
Pronounce: Ta-lar-kin
2. What would you do with "sokker"?

Answer: Wear them

"Sokker" is Norwegian for "socks" which, like in other parts of the world, are generally worn on the feet. When you wash them in the washing machine, one often mysteriously disappears, leaving you with a single sock! Sounds familiar? In Norway thick woollen socks are commonly worn in winter.
Pronouce: soccer
3. What would you do with a "hest"?

Answer: Ride it

A "hest" is a "horse". The Lyngen horse is one breed peculiar to Northern Norway and is an ancestor of the famous Icelandic breed. Trotting is a popular sport in Norway, particularly in the south.
Pronouce: hest
4. What would you do with a "datamaskin"?

Answer: Use for typing, receiving and sending e-mail and much else besides

A "datamaskin" is a computer - what you are using now! Some abbreviate it and simply call it a "data", while "PC" is becoming an increasingly popular alternative.
Pronounce: data ma-skeen
5. What would you do with a "bleie"?

Answer: Put it on a baby

A "bleie" is a nappy (or diaper in American English). Disposable nappies are becoming increasing popular here despite their high price. "Huggies" is one of the most popular brands available in Norway.
Pronounce: blay-a
6. What would you do with a "blyant"?

Answer: Write or draw with it

A "blyant" is a pencil. A coloured pencil is a "farge blyant", while a pencil sharpener is a "blyantspisser"
Pronounce: blee-ont
7. What would you do with a "lue"?

Answer: Wear it

A "lue" is a woollen hat, which is necessary during cold winters. Tromso, at nearly 70 degrees north and 600km north of the Arctic Circle, is home to the world's northernmost university, brewery, Catholic Church and outdoor heated pool to name but a few of its attractions.

But despite being so far north, winter temperatures seldom drop below minus 10 Celsius and have never reached minus 20. Proximity to the fiord and the Gulf Stream keep Tromso milder than places further inland, including Kautokeino (home to many Saami reindeer herders) where in 1998 the temperature fell to a chilling minus 53 degrees Celsius.

The locals needed more than one "lue" to go out, and boiling water tossed in the air fell like snow! Pronouce: loo-a
8. What do you do with a "frokost"?

Answer: Eat it

"Frokost" is the Norwegian word for breakfast. However, in Danish this word means lunch! A typical Norwegian "frokost" consists of coffee and open wholemeal bread sandwiches with spreads including ham, salami, cheese, liver pate, goat's cheese or mackerel in tomato sauce.
pronouce: froo-cost
9. What would you do with a "skje"?

Answer: Eat with it

A "skje" is a spoon, a "teskje" is a tea spoon and a "dessertskje" is, as the name suggests, a dessert spoon.
Pronouce: shay
10. What would you do with a "seng"?

Answer: Sleep in it

The Norwegian word for bed is "seng". Many foreigners find it intriguing that double duvets are extremely rare and most couples sharing a double bed each have their own single duvet. The amount of time people in Northern Norway spend in bed varies according to the time of year: much more in winter when it's dark 24 hours a day and cold outside and much less in summer when there is 24 hours sunshine!
Pronounced: seng
