Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which major manufacturer of parts for British sports cars became jokingly known as the 'Prince of Darkness'?

Answer: Lucas

Quality and reliability was not always the best at Lucas and parts had a tendency to fail in use, e.g. eletrical systems.
2. What was the alternative name for the Diamler SP250?

Answer: Daimler Dart

This car was a departure from the usual luxury salons produced by this manufacturer. It was largely constructed of fibreglass with an alloy V8 engine. The car was originally designated the Daimler Dart, but the name had to be changed for the American market.
3. Which was the first mass-produced British sports car to be fitted with fuel injection for the UK market?

Answer: Triumph TR6

The Triumph TR6 was fitted with the Lucas mechanical fuel injection system for the UK market only. Cars manufactured for the US market had twin carburetors to comply with federal emissions standards.
4. A special version of the Sunbeam Alpine was produced and upgraded with a V8 engine; what was it called?

Answer: Sunbeam Tiger

The Sunbeam Alpine was designed by the legendary Carroll Shelby and fitted with a Ford 4.3ltr V8 engine and later a 4.7ltr V8 engine. Approx. 7000 cars were built by Jenson Motors as Rootes did not have the manufacturing capacity.
5. Which major manufacturer supplied the engines for the Lotus Europa?

Answer: Renault

The Renault engine and transaxle as fitted to the Renault 16 were considered ideal for mid-engine configuration.
6. The Triumph Stag was affected by reliability problems, resulting in a crippling level of warranty claims for British Leyland. What was the main problem encountered by owners?

Answer: Overheating

Coolant system problems led to overheating which resulted in cylinder head damage. It was so bad that many owners fitted Rover V8 engines as replacements for the underdeveloped Triumph V8. Many asserted that the Rover unit should have been fitted from the outset.
7. In 1965, TVR Cars produced 4 prototypes of a car using the same Ford V8 as fitted to the TVR Griffin. What was it called?

Answer: TVR Trident

The TVR Trident was an Italian-designed, aluminium-bodied car, later briefly produced by Trident Cars Ltd as the Clipper.
8. SU manufactured carburetors for most British sports cars of the 1950/1960/70s. They also produced carburetors for aero engines of the period, but what does SU stand for?

Answer: Skinner Union

SU was originally part of Morris in the 1930s and manufactured constant depression-type carburetors until 1994.
9. The Jaguar D Type was designed to compete in the fiercely competitive Le Man 24 Hours race. Which of these statements is true?

Answer: The cars won 3 races.

The Jaguar D Type was specifically designed to win the 24 Heures du Mans race, to rival the likes of Porsche and Mercedes. Eighteen factory team cars were produced.
10. The Swallow Doretti was produced by Swallow Coachbuilding, a subsidiary of Tube Investments between 1954 & 1955. What mechanical underpinnings from a British sports car of the period were used for the Doretti?

Answer: Triumph TR2

Swallow had its origins in motorcycles and sidecars, and eventually evolved into Jaguar Cars which reputably killed off the Doretti.
