Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A Finnish person has just said "Oletko käynyt eläintarhassa?" to you. Which of these would be a relevant reply when translated into Finnish?

Answer: Yes, I enjoyed the giraffe exhibit the most.

"Oletko käynyt eläintarhassa?" is asking if you have visited the zoo. The most fitting response of the four choices would be, of course, to answer that you have visited and enjoyed the giraffe exhibit.
2. After looking through a Finnish menu, you decide you want to have some pea soup. To which of these people should you tell your order?

Answer: Tarjoilija

It would be most appropriate to tell a "tarjoilija", a waitress, that you'd like to order in a restaurant, rather than "opettaja" (a teacher), "lääkäri" (a doctor), or "kirjastonhoitaja" (a librarian).
3. Leo is attending a talent show at a Finnish school where many students will be playing different musical instruments. Which of these would he most likely NOT see a student play?

Answer: Lautapeli

Demonstrating one's skills in a "lautapeli", or board game, would most likely not qualify as an appropriate talent for a talent show. Instead, students might be playing "huilu" (a flute), "kitara" (a guitar), or "piano" (a piano, of course).
4. Someone who is feeling very ill should visit a "leipomo"?

Answer: No

If someone is very ill they should go to the hospital, or "sairaala ". Once they are better, they can stop by the "leipomo" (a bakery) for a treat.
5. A typical Finnish school would offer all of the following subjects except one. Which one?

Answer: Kultakalojenkasvatus

Typical school subjects may be "matematiikka" (mathematics), "kemia" (chemistry), or "ruotsin kieli" (Swedish language). Much less likely to be taught in a Finnish school is "kultakalojenkasvatus" (goldfish farming).
6. On a Finnish map, the country of Finland would be labeled as "Suomi".

Answer: True

"Suomi" is indeed the Finnish name for Finland, though it is called "Finnland" in German, "Finland" in Swedish, and "Finlandia" in Russian, Polish, and Spanish. A rune-stone dating from the 11th century, found in Gotland, contained the inscription "finlandi".
7. Anni is eagerly awaiting the arrival of "joulupukki". What will happen after this person's visit?

Answer: She will have Christmas presents.

Unless Anni has chosen to name her unborn child "joulupukki", which is very unlikely, this is not a baby she is expecting, nor is it the word for a postman. It is also not a common Finnish name that people have, male or otherwise. "Joulupukki" is the Finnish name for Santa Claus, after whose visit Anni will likely have Christmas presents.
8. What do these three Finnish words have in common? Omena, appelsiini, persikka.

Answer: They are fruits

The three words refer to an apple, orange, and peach, respectively. These are, of course, fruits.
9. The Finnish capital is called "Turku" in the native language.

Answer: False

Turku is a former capital and current city of Finland. The capital, Helsinki, retains its Finnish form when we speak of it in English.
10. Jukka needs some help identifying which countries surround Finland. Which of these items could be useful to him?

Answer: Karttapallo

Jukka's geographical task could be aided by a "karttapallo" (a globe). Less helpful in this particular endeavor would be a "laskin" (calculator), "pyyhekumi" (eraser), and "kello" (clock).
