Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did the Chevelle first come onto the market?

Answer: 1964

It came with four different motors, two 283s and two 327s. It wasn't top of line, but it would eventually become one of the fastest cars of that era.
2. The fastback body for the Chevelles came out in 1969.

Answer: False

The fastback models came out in 1968 and improved sales by quite a large margin that year.
3. Prior to 1970 GM had a ban on engine sizes higher than how many cubic inches in intermediate sized cars?

Answer: 400

After this ban was lifted it led to some of the highest powered cars of that era such as the LS6 454 V8's in the Chevelles and El Caminos.
4. When Ford came out with their car-truck mix, the Ranchero, Chevy had to come up with something to compete on the market with it. What was Chevy's car-truck mix called?

Answer: El Camino

The El Camino first came out on the body of an Impala, but this only lasted two years, from 1959-1960. Then it came back in 1964 on the base of a Chevelle. The Sprint was the car-truck mix combination from GMC.
5. Which of these motors was not an option for the 1970 Chevelles?

Answer: L33 402 V8

The L34 402 V8 produced 350 hp at 5200 rpm. The LS5 454 V8 put out 360 hp at 5400 rpm. The LS6 454 V8 had the highest horsepower output of any production engine. It produced 450 hp at 5600 rpm.
6. What pony car from Chevrolet was built to compete with Ford's pony car, the Mustang?

Answer: Camaro

Chevrolet brought this muscle car onto the market in 1967 and sold it saying the name meant Comrade in French, but other linguists translated it to Spanish and said that Camaro meant a type of shrimp.
7. Camaros were built on the same front frame as which other Chevrolet muscle car?

Answer: Nova

The word Nova means "doesn't go" in Spanish, but Chevrolet was thinking more along the lines of the sun and other celestial bodies. The front frames and rear axles interchanged for a number of years.
8. The SS package on the 1963 Nova was strictly a performance option.

Answer: False

It was actually the exact opposite, all that the SS package offered in 1963 for the Novas was special trim, wheel covers, bucket seats, special instrumentation, and a deluxe steering wheel all for the low price of $161.00.
9. There were three performance packages for the 1970 Camaros, which of these was not an actual package?

Answer: Z/21

In 1970 there were 27,136 RS models made, 12,476 SS models, and 7,733 Z/28 models. They each had different appearance and performance pieces on them.
10. Which of these Chevrolet motors helped get the "Big Three" horsepower competition going?

Answer: 409 V8

The "Big Three" referred to the three companies competing in the muscle car image, GM, Ford, and Chrysler. The 409 was a very popular engine for several reasons, probably the biggest push it got was when the Beach Boys wrote the song "She's Real Fine My 409" This engine came with only three models, the Impala SS, Impala, and the Bel Airs. 1962 was a very interesting year for this motor because it put out 409 hp, that was one horsepower for every cubic inch, something that had never occurred before.
