Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If I saw the letter 'B' on the license plate, what country would the car be from?

Answer: Belgium

The country is famous for Agatha Christie's fictional detective and Belgian lace. Having been there, it is a beautiful, peaceful country. The Atomium near Brussels is spectacular, and the Manneken Pis, also in Brussels, is one of the best known sculptures in Europe, if a little rude!
2. Where would I be if I saw the letters 'DK' on a locally-owned car?

Answer: Denmark

One of Denmark's most famous citizens is the writer Hans Christian Andersen, well known the world over for his books of fairy tales.
3. If I saw the letter 'D', what country would the car be from? Careful!

Answer: Germany

'D' signifies Deutschland, the German word for their country, but most Europeans knows that 'D' means Germany. One of the powerhouses of European finance, and one of the great powers in World politics.
4. Ooh la la, which country would the letter 'F' represent?

Answer: France

France's capital city is the 'City of Lights', Paris. Another country I have been to, so easy going and relaxed, with great food and wine.
5. I am visiting another place now, and I see the letters, 'GBZ'. What 'country' am I in? Be careful!

Answer: Gibraltar

Gibraltar ia a British Overseas Territory, which is also claimed by Spain. It was captured by the British in 1704, during the War of Spanish Succession, on behalf of the Habsburg pretender to the Spanish throne, and has been ceded to them ever since. Gibraltar's best known residents are the monkeys, that attract tourists from all over, but beware, they bite! (The monkeys, not the tourists).
6. If I see the letter 'S' on a car, which part of Northern Europe would I be in?

Answer: Sweden

The pop group ABBA has been among Sweden's most popular exports since their 1974 Eurovision Song Contest win. Even after all these years, long after they disbanded, they are still popular, and their songs are amongst the most recognisable. Sweden is also the land of the Vikings in conjunction with Norway, and it is also very probable, that they sailed to North America, possibly Newfoundland, sailing from Greenland up to 1000 years ago, with three ships under the command of Thorfinn Karlsefni.
7. Which beautiful country would I be in, if I saw the letters 'CH' on a car license plate?

Answer: Switzerland

This was a tricky one, as most people outside Europe might think that 'S' was for Switzerland, but Sweden has that one! A beautiful land of cheese, milk chocolate and mountains. The odd thing about Switzerland is, they don't like noisy cars and will pull you over and stop you, yet, they have one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the world! The reason for this is, that men between the ages of 20 and 30 serve in the Swiss Military, and their weapons are kept at their homes, so the gun ownership figures, are higher compared to other countries. Go figure!
8. Which warm European country would I be in if I saw the letter 'E' on a car? Careful now - please write the ENGLISH name!

Answer: Spain

Another tricky one, as most people would again think of 'S' as the correct letter, but 'E' is used to signify Espana, the name used in that country. Yet again, another of my visited countries. Its proximity makes it a popular tourist destination for the British.
9. A stunning place to visit, which principality would I be in if I saw the letters 'MC' on a locally-registered car?

Answer: Monaco

A small, but very wealthy place, it is home to the Monaco Grand Prix, a famous casino, and the Grimaldi family. The late actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956, and went to live in the "Pink Palace" overlooking Monaco. Not much more you can say about this place, just have lots and lots of money.
10. I am in another stunning country, with masses of history. Where would I see the letters 'GR' on a car?

Answer: Greece

Another of my oft visited countries. This has to be one of the most spectacular places, if you are into history like me. It has its troubles at the moment with the Euro currency, but I am sure, they will survive. Everywhere you go, there is history staring you in the face, Olympia, where the Olympic games first stared, Delphi, Sparta, Mount Athos, Thermopylae, and far too many others to mention.
11. I would have to wear warmer clothes now, if I saw the letters 'IS' on a car. Where would I be?

Answer: Iceland

An unforgettable country, with its volcanoes, ice fields and the geothermic vents, that provide the island with its heating and lighting requirements.
It is sometimes claimed that it is the only place where someone can stand with one foot in Europe and one foot in America; this is because the country has a 'split', that separates the 2 tectonic plates, by only a few feet in places.
12. Where would a car originate from if it had the letters 'HR' on the license plate?

Answer: Croatia

Probably the trickiest one, as the 'HR' stands for Hrvatska, which is what the Croatian name for the country. It has produced tennis stars like Marin Cilic and, of course, Goran Ivanisevic. Well done if you got this one!
13. This country is one of my personal favourite places to visit. Which part of Europe would this car come from, with the letters 'NMK'?

Answer: North Macedonia

Before 2019, the country was just called Macedonia. However, the name was changed by mutual agreement to distinguish it from the separate region of Greece also called Macedonia.
14. Back to the Western part of Europe now. Which country is represented by the letters 'NL' on a car license plate?

Answer: The Netherlands

The Netherlands is the correct name for this country. A lot of people do refer to it as Holland, but this refers to just two of its regions, North and South Holland. I know I am getting boring, but this is another place I have visited. Very flat, but fascinating, and such an easy going country.
15. A lovely part of Europe/Asia now. Where would I be, if I saw the letters 'TR' on a car license plate?

Answer: Turkey

One of the worlds great countries, straddling both Europe and Asia, with the Bosphorus separating the continents. Its best-known city (and one-time capital) has been known as Byzantium, Constantinople and Istanbul, which just shows how important it was to many races and cultures over the years.

It is also one of the most risky places to be, due to the large number of earthquakes over the years. Turkey is also the original home of Saint Nicholas, better known as Santa Claus. The capital of Turkey, is of course, Ankara.
