Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Qu'est-ce que c'est que les stores?

Answer: awnings (aka shutters)

If you see this on a shop, they sell canvas things even jeans but primarily awnings. As the typical one was made out of canvas but some other materials are called "stores" for awnings, even metal.
2. Which of the following words does NOT refer to money?

Answer: Le flic

Slang abounds in words for money in most languages, French is no exception. "Un flic" is a cop.
3. Which of the following does NOT refer to money?

Answer: Les nanas

"Les nanas" refers to young women. Many women use this term to designate themselves...but it's getting rather close to "chick" so should be used after hearing it used. "Le ble" is wheat so is close to "dough" or bread in terms of "earning daily bread". (sorry the accents no longer work, put an acute accent on that one in your mind please.)
4. Which of the following does NOT mean "to be broke"?

Answer: etre plein aux as

The original answer had an accent but I'll include it. The verb "faucher" means to thresh grain, so if your grain has already been threshed, then you're broke! A rond is a coin. On the straw or "sur la paille" is fairly clear. Sec means dry so the meaning is fairly obvious.
Plein aux as, is "full to the aces" or rolling in dough.
5. Which of the following means generous?

Answer: avoir le coeur sur la main

If you grip onto your coins, you are cheap! Pingre is stingy. Radin is as well. Your heart on your hand means you are very generous indeed. The feminine of radin is radine.
6. Which of the following does NOT mean ugly?

Answer: etre un canon

Un canon is a term used for a top model type, may be used for a man, but is actually used for a woman more often than not. "Claudia Schiffer est un canon". The others are "laid comme un poux" as ugly as a louse!, un boudin = a sausage or like black pudding in British English, "moche" is an all purpose word for "homely" or not attractive in the least. I don't approve of these terms of course, just want you to know them! Don't punch anyone out on my account please.
7. Which of the following does NOT mean "he is really dumb"?

Answer: C'est un rat de bibliotheque

C'est un rat de bibliotheque means he is a bookworm. The others are "stupid as his feet" "didn't invent gunpowder" and "he's missing a bolt." Not extremely complementary but heard quite often. About the equivalent of not having the sharpest tools in the shed.
8. Qu'est-ce que c'est qu'un "ralentisseur"?

Answer: a speed bump

I love this word, yet few people slow down for them. "muffler" is "un pot d'echappement" or "silencieux". "Un slow" is a slow dance.
"l'accelerateur" is the accelerator.
9. Un clignotant?

Answer: a blinking light, turn signal

If someone turns in front of you without using it, "Et le clignotant, vous ne connaissez pas?" Could also be on a machine, computer etc.
10. Which of the following does NOT mean, "are you completely crazy?"

Answer: es-tu completement sur?

The original meaning had an accent so "Crever" means with the air let out, such as in a punctured tire, but in this sense tired, exhausted, the others all mean crazy.
11. Which of the following does NOT mean, to tell someone off or to go to hell?

Answer: envoyer en colonie de vacances

Colonie de vacances just means summer camp, nothing more. Roses are beautiful but full of thorns, paitre is the verb for putting your animals to pasture. 'Je l'ai envoye paitre' means "I told him where to get off." It's pretty elegant, but you see it occasionally. I won't put the others here, you'll have to learn them yourself.
12. Which of the following does NOT mean a thing, or even a whatchamacallit? Une chose is the common word.

Answer: un pif

Un pif is slang for the nose. Il a le pif rouge, means he drinks too much and has a red nose. Machin-chouette is when you can't think of what it's called. By the way, if you're doing something without the manual and measuring instruments, you're doing it "par pifometre".
Estimating it!
13. Which of the following words is NOT used for very or tres?

Answer: dument

Dument means duly. I have been duly informed. I've never been able to figure out the word vache for very..but it's used all over France. If you think about it, "I'm cowly tired" sounds odd.
14. Une feuille vierge?

Answer: A blank sheet of paper

Vierge means virgin as well as designating the astrological sign, then it also means new or unused, or blank. Feuille is leaf for the tree and the sheet of paper. Portefeuille is billfold or wallet.
15. Faire la grasse matinee?

Answer: sleep in

"Faire la grasse matinee" (accents deleted sorry), simply means to sleep in more than usual. I'm not quite sure where the fat part comes in!
"Matinee" simply means morning, so you see where the early show comes in. "Matiere grasse" is the fat content in foods etc.
