Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Huey Long was elected governor of Louisiana in 1928, but resigned in 1932. Why did he resign?

Answer: He had been elected to the U.S. senate two years earlier.

Long was elected to the U.S. senate in 1930, and should have taken office there in 1931, but he chose instead to continue as governor until January 1932, some 10 months after his senate term began, so that he could hand-pick his successor.
2. Complete the slogan of Huey Long's Share the Wealth Society: "Every man a king..."

Answer: but no man wears a crown.

Huey Long had a populist/socialist philosophy which advocated limiting personal wealth, a guaranteed annual income for everyone and an old age pension (pre-social security). He formed the Society to advocate for those goals.
3. Why did Huey Long not go through with his plan to challenge President Franklin Roosevelt for the 1936 Democratic Party presidential nomination?

Answer: He was assassinated.

Long announced his intention to challenge Roosevelt, but was assassinated in 1935.
4. Which was not one of Long's accomplishments as governor of Louisiana?

Answer: Establishing Louisiana State University

Long expanded the Louisiana public education system and increased funding to LSU, but it was founded back in 1860.
5. What job did Huey Long propose he would give to President Franklin Roosevelt when he ousted him from the presidency?

Answer: Secretary of the Navy

In his modestly titled book "My First Days in the White House," Long also stated he would name former President Herbert Hoover as his Secretary of Commerce.
6. In 1931 Huey Long became embroiled in a controversy involving 'potlikker'. What was potlikker?

Answer: The juice from stewed greens, which is eaten with cornbread

Long loved dipping his corn bread in the juice from stewed greens, but when he went public with this culinary obsession he was lambasted by the Atlanta Constitution, which said that real southerners don't dip, but crumble the corn bread over the potlikker (derived from 'pot liquor').

The incident is described in T. Harry Williams' classic biography, "Huey Long." Later, during a 15 and one half hour filibuster, Long touted the virtues of potlikker on the senate floor.
7. Who eventually took up Long's mantle and challenged Roosevelt for the presidency in 1936?

Answer: William Lemke

Lemke was a congressman from North Dakota who ran for president under the banner of the Union Party in 1936. He was backed by Smith, who had taken over leadership of Long's Share the Wealth Society, popular radio commentator Coughlin and old age pension advocate Townsend. Without the popular and charismatic Long, however, the effort foundered, and Lemke received less than 2% of the vote. Smith challenged Roosevelt in 1944 as the nominee of the America First Party.
8. What was the occupation of the man who assassinated Huey Long?

Answer: Doctor

Dr. Carl Weiss's father-in-law was a judge who was a political enemy of Long. On September 8, 1935, in the state capitol building, Weiss shot Long at point-blank range. Weiss was immediately killed by multiple shots, possibly as many as 30, from Long's body guards. Long died two days later after multiple operations.
9. What novel fictionalized the life of Huey Long?

Answer: All the King's Men

Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize winning classic tells the story of politician Willie Stark, who was based on Long.
10. Which of these statements about Huey Long's family is not true?

Answer: His son served as governor of Louisiana

Long's wife, Rose McConnell, served out his senate term after he was assassinated. His brother Earl served three non-consecutive stints as Louisiana Governor and Huey's son Russel served as Louisiana's U.S. senator from 1948-87. Huey's brother George also served as a member of Congress.
