Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Malay word "kakak" is a title that I would use when referring to which member of my family?

Answer: Older sister

We also use "kakak" as a title of respect for women in general who are older than us. "Abang" is a word for older brother and "adik" refers to either younger brother or sister.
2. The Malay word "kodok" is a name given to our amphibian friend that likes to hop around or near water (or sometimes some of them like to hop into my house). What creature is it in English?

Answer: Toad

"Kodok" is also a Malaysian dessert which is a mixture of banana, flour and sugar, fried in oil.
3. The Malay palindrome "kapak" is a tool which we often use to chop bones (such as buffalo bones) or wood to small pieces. What is the English word for this item?

Answer: Axe

Rumor has it that a very tiny "kapak" is used as a concealed weapon or for ritual purposes.
4. The Malay word "kokok" is a sound made by one particular bird, usually in the early morning hours. You would probably not want to keep this bird as a pet in your apartment or you will get a lot of complaints from your neighbours. Can you guess its name?

Answer: Rooster

There is only one rooster in a chicken coop. If there are two roosters or more they will fight each other to death for the right to rule the coop. So, more roosters end up in the cooking pot before they reach maturity.
5. The next Malay word is "kutuk". It is not nice when you are doing this to other people. Can you tell what despicable behavior this is?

"Kutuk" has been used as a tool of trade by politicians to gain support from voters, since legally "kutuk" does not amount to slander or defamation of someone's character.
