Answer: The Sun

In January 2009, the Sun was selling 3.1 million copies per day. The Daily Mail was the second-highest selling paper, with 2.2 million, then the Mirror on 1.4 million. The Star was way behind on only 770,000 sales.

Answer: Belfast News Letter

The News Letter was established in 1737. The more famous Times was first published as the 'Daily Universal Register' in 1785, and was followed by the Observer (the world's oldest Sunday paper) in 1791. The weekly Worcester Journal is the longest-established newspaper in the world, first published as the Worcester Postman in 1690.

The liberal broadsheet was originally the 'Manchester Guardian', which moved down to London in an attempt to increase its circulation. Its Northern edition is still printed in Manchester. The Daily Express was also originally published from Manchester, but the city's most famous paper today is the local 'Manchester Evening News'.

Fleet Street has been a centre of publishing since the 16th century. From the 1700s, it grew into the centre of newspaper publishing, and it is still a synonym for the national UK papers.

The extremely successful Evening Standard is available across a huge region around London, and since 2009 has been available free, which has not surprisingly increased its circulation significantly. Over the years, it has swallowed up or put out of business all its competitors, including the Evening News.

The Western Mail is published in Cardiff and describes itself as the "national newspaper of Wales". The Herald and the Daily Record are both published in Glasgow, while the Scotsman is from Edinburgh. For many years, the Daily Record sold more copies in Scotland than any UK-wide newspaper did.

As its name suggests, the Financial Times focuses on business economics, though it also provides extensive coverage of a wide range of political and other areas. Its salmon-pink paper is one of the cheapest and subtlest ways ever thought up to make a product stand out from the crowd.

Rupert Murdoch, most famous in the US as the owner of Fox, became one of the more controversial newspaper owners in the UK. He introduced topless 'page 3' models in the "Sun", destroyed the power of the press unions, and fought hard to make his media empire successful.

"The People" is owned by Trinity Mirror, but is not closely linked with a daily newspaper. It once had a circulation of more than five million copies an issue. "The Sun on Sunday" was launched in 2012 as a Sunday partner to the "Sun", replacing the defunct News of the World, which had been closed by its owner, Rupert Murdoch, following its implication in a serious phone-hacking scandal. "The Observer", which was nearly closed in 2009, is linked with the "Guardian", and the "Sunday Sport", which once reported that a double decker bus had been found frozen in Antarctica, is linked with the little-known "Daily Sport".
