I'm curious about the language abilities of the Funtrivia populace. What languages do you speak? Which languages have you studied? Which languages do you find difficult to study? What has been your language learning experience?

Rather than the differences in languages, I am amazed at the similarities. Not necessarily in the words or pronunciations, but in the manner of expression. The way something is said often conveys it's meaning even though you may not understand the words at all.

I'm also intrigued by the fact that many of the same sayings (adages, proverbs, etc) seem to appear in many languages. Are they universal truths or wisdom?

As I learn more and more of other languages, I tend to think that all languages arise from some common root language. Or is it just that there has been, throughout human history, such a mixing of cultures that the same concepts are now expressed in all tongues.

Every language has words for counting, for greetings and salutations, to express anger and insults, etc. Often the syntax and even words themselves are similar.

English is the only language I am fluent in, though I can put a few sentences together in German and French, though my French has already got worse in the 4 months that have passed since my last lesson. I did have Latin lessons, but Latin just went in one ear and out the other.

Oooh, what a great thread! I've always been fascinated by languages. English (American variety) is my native tongue; had French lessons in early elementary school (age 6-8) and continued studying French in high school and college (university). Picked up Spanish in college also. I used to be moderately fluent in both French & Spanish but don't get much practice anymore - I do better with written rather than spoken language in those two. Through self-study in my adult years, I have picked up a little Italian, a few words of German and of Irish. I love exploring the similarities/differences among various languages, and how English has been influenced by so many other languages.

I'm a very fluent speaker of Vietnamese because my favourite uncle married a Vietnamese lady who taught since I was really natural. I was born in Australia and my friends think it's weird hearing me make weird sounds since I'm blonde and I have green eyes. We studied Japanese at school but I don't remember much.

I studied French and German at school and can still string a few sentences together.
Not nearly as fluent as I was though.

I speak English and Italian fluently, have working knowledge of French and some (very little) Spanish. I have leftovers of German: numbers and a few words - I studied it years ago but have never used it. I have elementary Latin. I can also count up to ten in farsi.

I speak English, and study Spanish at school. My mom tried teaching me French, but that didn't work out too well :)

I'm a native of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and although it's kind of like cheating, the Croatian and Serbian languages as the same, with some dialect differences. Legally, they are different languages, so that's three for me.
I've been studying French for six years and I'm considered to be fluent with that as well. I really want to go to France to give my skills the ultimate test instead of routine conversations with my professor.
English would be the fifth, if you haven't yet noticed. That makes a total of five. I really have no desire to further expand my language speaking abilities. But I do think that it's crucial that everyone be able to speak at least two, fluently. Call it ignorance or whatever other term you can think of, but it needs to be overcome and people should spread some culture all over.

English is my first language but I'm fascinated by words and love learning other languages. I can get by in Italian and German and have intermediate French. I'm learning Spanish. Of these I found Italian the easiest to pick up and German the hardest, mainly because of the grammar. French is one of my favourite languages - I love the sound of it.
