I'm curious about the language abilities of the Funtrivia populace. What languages do you speak? Which languages have you studied? Which languages do you find difficult to study? What has been your language learning experience?

I grew up speaking English (I'm from USA). I am also fluent in sign language (which is my fav. language and if I could I'd quit speaking and only sign, but I digress). I know Spanish and French rather well (I had 6 years or so of Spanish and 4 years or so of French). I took a symester of Chinese (that was the hardest so far). I'm currently learning Italian. Next I plan to learn German and Japanese. I want to learn as many langauges as I can. It's my theory that a person should learn the basics of as many langages as they can because one never knows when one might need that langauge. I mean suppose you happen to be walking down the street and you need help for some reason, and the only person around only knows Japense. And you don't know how to talk to him. Sure you could communicate, but it is much easier if you could just both speak the same lanaguge. Sorry I wrote so much here, but I'm rather passionate about learning languages.

Latin is the best language ever created. English is the only language I am fluent in, but I took two years of it in school after taking three years of Spanish, and I liked Latin way better. I think it is easier to learn than Spanish, and I love learning about the ancient history that comes along with it. As far as I am concerned, Latin isn't dead, only the people who spoke it are.

I did Latin for 3 years, and found it incredibly logical and if you learnt the rules there was little trouble using it compared to many others. I can now work out the meaning of many new words from the Latin origin, and am clearly foxed by any words with Greek origins in comparison as I only learned the basic few rude words in Greek as I do in many ;)

I can speak a little spanish, some chinese characters and english. I like studying any type of language. I am trying to learn how to read hieroglyphs, it' hard but interesting. My experience is pretty cool, and I think it rocks to learn different languages. what about you?

I speak three languages: English (the first language I learned to speak, second I learned to read), Italian (the second language I learned to speak but first I learned to read) and Dutch (as a result of living in the Netherlands). I can also understand Spanish (because I compare it to Italian), French (just jumble English and Italian together, and presto!) and some German (if I am really tired and not really concentrating).

I recommend everyone to learn at least one other language other than their native language. One language should be an international language (either English or French). If your native language is one of these, then learn the other. To those whose native language isn't either one, learn one of the two along with "mastering" your own native language. I cannot begin to emphasise the importance of speaking several languages.

English is the only language I speak fluently, but I try to speak about five dialects of it, if that counts. I also have taken two years of Latin and am very, very fond of the language. It's nice and regular and follows many more rules than English does. Latin is by no means a dead language, because it lives on in the Romance languages and in English, through various borrowings.

Well, I am an English-speaking American, but I know some French, am trying to teach myself Russian, and know a small amount of Japanese, Spanish, and Arabic. Languages are fascinating.

First language: English (I'm from England)
I'm now in my final year of a German degree, and as part of my degree I lived over there for 11 months so I'm pretty fluent in German now. Well, I can get my point acros and understand most of what I read/hear. My grammar is still pretty bad though.
