I'm curious about the language abilities of the Funtrivia populace. What languages do you speak? Which languages have you studied? Which languages do you find difficult to study? What has been your language learning experience?

I am a native English speaker, am fluent in French, and I use both of those to guess at (and learn) words in numerous Germanic and Romance languages. I've also picked up a few words of Ukrainian, Cree, Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, Gaelic, Dene, etc., out of interest and the numerous opportunities presented by friends and co-workers in Canada.

Native language: English
In high school: French, German, and Latin
In college: Chinese, Portuguese, and Yoruba
On my own: Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish

The only one I would call myself fluent in today besides English is Korean, since I use it every day. I used to be fluent in French and Portuguese, but I haven't had opportunities to practice them in over a decade, so they've atrophied a lot.

Romanian is my native language. I learned French since second grade in school and I was fluent in French but that was long ago. ( I have the DALF diploma). From the 5th grade we studied English but only in the past 4 years I learned to communicate a little in English from the net. I tried to learn Spanish and German alone but I failed. Of course we studied Latin in school but only a few distant memories remain after 30 years.

I speak English but I've also learnt Greek, German, Italian & Japanese. I remember the German classes at primary school because we weren't allowed to use English. Everything we said had to be in German. Here's one question that was heard a lot: Kann ich bitte auf die toilette gehen?

My mother tongue is English and the only foreign language that I would claim to speak (and also read and write) well is German.

I also started Latin and French at age rising 11. I continued Latin till age 18 and French to BA level.

At school we were taught German with fanatical zeal and by the end of the first year of German we had learned most of the grammar that we ever needed. A few details and matters of style followed over the next 3-4 years. I continued German at university level. At the end of my second year of German I was introduced to one of the professors of German. He mentioned that he would be teaching me German in the following year and casually asked me which HS I'd attended. I told him, whereupon he said: "In that case your German will be very good". I was thunderstruck!
