Uncle Billy is filling out a deposit slip when he meets Mr. Potter at the bank. He takes Mr. Potter's newspaper, and points out a story showing Harry Bailey has been awarded the Medal of Honor.

Uncle Billy: George would have gotten two of those medals if he had gone.

Mr. Potter: Bad ear.

Uncle Billy: Yes. After all, Potter, some people like George had to stay home. Not every heel was in Germany and Japan.

Uncle Billy folds the paper over the envelope full of money he is holding, and Potter grabs it and leaves.

Uncle Billy was played by Thomas Mitchell. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in "Stagecoach," and was the first person to win an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony Award. Movie fans may also recognize him as the actor who played Scarlett O'Hara's father in "Gone With the Wind".

Hinds starred as Mr. Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life" in a minor role. Mr. Bailey opened up a home loan company in Bedford Falls, New York and was the proud father of two sons, George and Harry. Near the beginning of the movie, Mr. Bailey was in a business meeting with Mr. Potter and others and Mr. Bailey mentioned that many of their customers had fallen on hard times. He stated that most of the customers had trouble making their payments, so Mr. Potter suggested they all be tossed out of their homes onto the streets. Mr. Bailey objected to this and Mr. Potter then accused Mr. Bailey of wanting to run a charity ward as opposed to a business. When Mr. Potter bashed Mr. Bailey, George blasted Mr. Potter for it but Mr. Bailey took George outside and informed him he could handle Mr. Potter.
Hinds was in the films, "Scarlet Street", "Inside Job" and "The Egg and I".

When Uncle Billy is at the bank preparing to deposit $8,000, he sees Mr. Potter come in with his newspaper. Deciding to irritate the greedy old man, Uncle Billy grabs Mr. Potter's newspaper with the headlines about Harry's war decoration and brags on his nephew a bit, ending with the lines above.

When George tells him he ran into the tree, the man smells whiskey on George's breath and says, "You must mean two other trees. You had me worried. One of the oldest trees in Pottersville." Later in the movie there are numerous signs downtown that say Pottersville, including the library where Mary works.

At the end of the film when the friends and neighbors are singing "Auld Lang Syne" in the Baileys' living room, Zuzu delivers this quote as she points to a bell ornament that is jingling on the Christmas tree.

Zuzu was played by Karolyn Grimes, who also appeared in the popular Christmas movie, "The Bishop's Wife".
