Answer: When he got beaten up by the Socs

According to the book, Johnny had 'bawled like a baby' the day they all found him in the lot beaten to a bloody pulp after the Socs got a hold of him. Ponyboy reflects that 'they'd seen him take a beatin' with a 2 x 4 from his old man and never let out a wimper'. The only other time a reference is made to Johnny crying was when they were in the church and were discussing having killed Bob, the Soc.

These scenes were unfortunatly cut from the movie. In the book, Ponyboy had just came out of a movie theatre, and was on his way home when he was jumped by the Socs. Darry, Dallas, Johnny, Soda, Two-Bit, and Steve came to his rescue. All Pony received from being jumped was a cut on his neck.
