Wembley Stadium was designed to hold 127,000 spectators but it is estimated that as many as 250,000 had entered the ground by the time the game was due to kick off. Mounted police were asked to get the spectators off the pitch and Billie, ridden by PC George Storey, became famous as the most visible of the horses in the newsreel film of the event. Oddly enough, Billie was not actually a white horse, but grey, merely appearing white on the newsreel. Bolton Wanderers won the final 2-0.

The incident did though, play a significant part in persuading soccer's lawmakers to punish such fouls with a sending off (red card) rather than a booking (yellow card).
