Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these animals is NOT a herbivore?

Answer: tiger

A herbivore's primary diet comes from plants. Giraffes mainly eat leaves and twigs. Giant pandas eat bamboo grass. Elephants eat grasses, leaves, twigs, nuts, and fruits. Tigers primarily eat other animals.

2. Which of the following is a cephalopod?

Answer: Octopus

Cephalopoda is a class of the phylum Mollusca. Cephalopods are exclusively marine. Development in cephalopods is direct, which means that there is no intermediate stage between the young and adult creature, such as larva or pupa. Of the options given, only the octopus is a cephalopod.

Teredo is also known as the ship worm and all three wrong options are molluscs.

3. Which of these "hogs" is truly a hog - that is, a kind of pig?

Answer: warthog

A warthog is an African wild pig, tusked and hairy. A groundhog is a North American rodent, a marmot, one of the few animals that hibernates. Another hibernator is the unrelated hedgehog, a spiny Old World mammal; it is known for rolling into a little spiky ball when threatened.

A quahog is not a mammal like the others - it is a clam, an edible mollusk native to the Atlantic shore of North America.

4. Which of these pets is a rodent?

Answer: Mongolian gerbil

A Turkish angora is a breed of cat, a caique is a type of bird, and a ball python is a species of snake. While all of them can be kept as a pet, a Mongolian gerbil is the only option that is a rodent. In the 1950s, a number of Mongolian gerbils were taken from Mongolia to America for the first time.

They were used for scientific study, as well as being bred for pets.

5. My family enjoys a piquant sauce in our stew that features caprine meat. Which meat do we have in our lovely dinner?

Answer: Goat

Caprine refers to "goat." A goat is a domesticated four-legged animal used for milk and meat. They are also a good guard animal at a farm, because they make lots of noise when a predator approaches. (Baaa...baa is a typical sound.) Piquant means pungent or pleasing to the palate. Please join us for our spicy goat stew. If you wish to enjoy buffalo, beef or horse steaks, there is a place down the road!

6. Biologically, sponges are animals, not plants. What is the claim to fame of the giant volcano sponges located in McMurdo Sound in Antarctica?

Answer: They are nearly 15,000 years old

The giant volcano sponges in Antarctica, at 15,000 years old, are thought to be the world's oldest living animals. The secret of the sponge's longevity is thought to be their environment - they live deep under the sea, anywhere between 49ft (15 metres) and 472 feet (144 meters) down, and in extremely cold conditions.

These conditions slow down all biological processes. (I might move to Antarctica!) The sponges are hard to study, because of their location, however what is known, is that they grow up to 6.5 feet (2m) in height and 4.5 feet (1.4m) in diameter, and do so extremely slowly - in fact their growth rate is almost imperceptible.

The sponges are shaped a bit like pears and are usually white or pale yellow in colour. Though sponges are classified as animals, they are essentially about the simplest animal you can find - they do not have organs, or any other body part normally associated with animals, and live most of their lives just rooted to one spot.

7. Which of these characteristics would most likely NOT contribute to the camouflage of a stick insect and its offspring?

Answer: Bright yellow coloring

The walkingstick is most widely known for its remarkable ability to mimic its surroundings. Stick insects often hang motionless from tree branches for long periods of time and are usually green or brown in color, with long bodies and thin legs.

8. Which of these dangerous animals weighs the most?

Answer: Komodo dragon

The Komodo dragon or Komodo monitor lives on remote Indonesian islands. It was long thought that the Komodo dragon's tactics was to bite its prey and inject septic bacteria contained in its saliva into the wound but recent research has shown that the bacteria are similar to those found in other carnivores. Komodo dragons have venom glands and biologists now believe that prey is killed by the effects of this venom.

Their bite is weaker than that of a pet cat but they have been seen ramming a carcass against a tree to force it down their throat.

9. What is the technical term for the arc of a horse's jump?

Answer: bascule

A very "round" bascule is generally desirable in jumping horses. This is particularly true in hunters, where horses are judged in part on the quality of their jump. Equitation riders, who are judged on their own position and riding ability, often prefer a "flatter" jump as this is less likely to dislodge a rider from the saddle.

10. What is the scientific name for the giant panda?

Answer: Ailuropoda Melanoleuca

Ailurus Fulgens is the scientific name for a red panda, a barn owl is Tyto Alba, and Bubo Scandiacus is a snowy owl.
